A thread for PS3 owners Here

Anyone using optical sound? I'm not but someone here just asked why his wont work. He's plugged it in right, and has selected optical from the XMB menu but no sound... any ideas?

did he tick the right checkboxes for what his amp can play?

Edit: Also sometimes with ours, I have to turn the amp on first and then the ps3.

Should be just a case of selecting optical and then ticking the boxes that his amp can decode. Nothing else to it.

Yeah, but then there's linear PCM or Bitstream. I mean, what the fuck? Only one of those gives me 5.1 (I can't remember which) and there's no explanation when you have to choose. The DVD and PS3 scaling options are vague too. The options are a mess.

Linear PCM and bitstream are different, and not all amps do both. So you can choose. Read your amp's manual to work out which to select. You tick which options your amp can do, and the PS3 will output the option highest up the list that the game/ DVD/ BD is able to use.

HK machine? I didn't even know such a thing existed! I thought it was just a Japanese machine. Mine was one of the first bought from HK (which was then resold onto me) and I have always thought of it as a Japanese machine.

No, there are actual Hong Kong region PlayStation 3s (they're also the cheapest PS3s in the world - the JP price minus tax).

They're basically NTSC J machines, but come with a UK (HK) power supply, and also read Region 3 DVDs natively. They have the same Blu-ray region as the Japanese and US machines (Region Code A covers America, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and a few other places - but not Europe).

As the PS3 games are region free though, it's fairly irrelevant - before in the case of the PS2 the Hong Kong PS2s only played Japanese NTSC games (unless chipped as 99% of them were).

There are also Hong Kong Region 3 PS3 games. Which are actually more unique - they often have an option for Chinese audio or text (as well as English and sometimes Japanese - it varies from game to game). The good thing about the HK R3 PS3 games is the price - typically around hk$350 (£22). Other than that they're essentially just repackaged and localised versions of the US or Japanese games.

It has an instruction book? I thought it just had a shitty quick start and trouble shooting guide?

The "Quick Start" guide goes into ball-aching detail about every option in the machine. Firmware-update-added stuff like Full RGB (which is for TVs that support Full RGB mode) is covered in the online manual though. XMB->Network->Online Manuals.

Problems with connecting to PSN :P

Just got wireless, my laptop is fine... I've got it passworded.

How do I connect?

If I do it manually the IP works but the rest doesn't.

I think I need to find out what my WEP is (thats what it says next to it)

any ideas?

Thanks!

Yeah, if you're on WEP you'll need to put it in. You'll not get anywhere if you're trying to access the network without your password! Just go through the wizard and pay attention to what your router's set up as.

In other news, I imagine me vesh and uncle mike will need an extra player in Burnout to do the 4 player challenges. The only requirement is that you own a decent headset! And are willing to slog through the 50 challenges.

Anyone interested?
