A thread for PS3 owners Here

Hello Goaty ♥

Recommended Posts

Having had a PS3 for about a month now I would say that a full BC 40Gig model at £249.99 would be perfect and certainly a viable alternative to the 360. For someone who isn't a hardcore gamer* there is enough there to keep you entertained games wise whilst also giving you Blu-ray playback for films you can rent and watch easily from places like Blockbusters and the internet browsing which, with a keyboard and mouse is just as good as its PC counterpart, is handy, particularly if you have a Blutooth printer.

I was also thinking that a version of iTunes for the PS3 would be really good, though obviously Sony isn't going to go for that. For me it would be a hell of a lot more practal at least.

*By hardcore I mean people who have a lot of time to dedicate to gaming.

Completely agree. I'm finding that it's more of a struggle to keep my 360. I guess I'm just waiting to see what exclusives come out this year. As a media centre the PS3 is fantastic, simple and elegant to use. Everyone in my house loves it. Now when I switch on my 360 it sounds like a bloody hoover is on and the since the last update the blade interface just feels messy to me.

There's no doubt that the PS3 at least started very expensive but next to the 360 it's pretty clear you get what you pay for so far as hardware quality is concerned.

Id be mostly interested in the PS3 as a media centre, as games-wise theres almost nothing that appeals to me yet. With this in mind, I wondered if you can answer the following, apologies if

Can the PS3 access Network Shares and locally attached USB/Firewire drives? If so is it able to play Blu-Ray images from locally attached/network resources? I currently use an Xbox for Xvids etc, so if I could play HD content (MKV?) it could be a real clincher.

network shares no, locally attached usb fat32-formatted drives yes. You can also run tversity or wmp11 (or other) media servers to send content over the network.

I'm not sure you can play blu-ray images, there's a filesize limit on what it'll play back. It will play some divx and HD though.

It doesn't play MKV files though.

Why can't somebody release a little box that can stream any HD content from your PC, regardless of what codec it uses or what size it is or what format the fucking sound is in, that also has a nifty little GUI and a half-decent remote? There always seems to be limitations.

Yeah, you'd have to do that thingy to change the container file. Wouldn't mean a full re-encode though usually, would it?

And I think you're describing XBMC except on hardware that can deal with HD content!

How does that work?

You're a ball and you've got to get to the exit, basically. But before you get there you gotta pick up the key, or keys. And each level is like a crazy weird maze thing. It's hard to explain.

Sony has told CVG that yesterday's images of the high-anticipated in-game XMB we're indeed fake.

And so our fears of it being the work of a sad, lonely soul with nothing better to do with their worthless lives than screw with the hearts of others have been realised.

"The XMB images are fake," Sony told us, adding: "There are no firmware updates planned for January."

Damn those faker makers. We hope their dirty, Photoshop-forging PC explodes and they're forced to continue their virtual social lives in internet cafes with the tourists and homeless people.

For now, you'll just have to stick with Sony's previous confirmation of the feature to come in 2008.

Thanks for the reply. From the sounds of it, the PS3 wont be the media centre solution I was hoping for, I expect Ill have to build a HTPC as originally planned.

Probably. I still hold out hope that it'll either be improved through or official firmware or be hacked to allow something like XBMCHD but meantime it's not quite there yet.

Yeah. All I need is for it to stream off a samba share like my Xbox and it'd be spot on. Not sure the Linux thing would have enough oomph due to not having full chip access? Maybe it doesn't need it all for playback though.
