A thread for PS3 owners Here

Hello Goaty ♥

In Home I'll be able to put a TV in my room and play all my videos for anyone to see who comes round. We can sit on the sofa and just chill! Maybe watch a film, get a drink, touch each other and stuff.

It sounds a lot more interactive than I was first lead to believe.

As existing PS3 owners, have you noticed any performance differences in whether the PS3 is kept horizontally or vertically?

Just that I am thinking of getting a PS3 as a Blu Ray player and was planning on having it vertically...are there any issues with this?

Is it generally better to have the PS3 one way or the other?

Thanks

You can't bloody send videos! Only images. Maybe a firmware update tomorrow will let you send video.

Image sending is pretty poor, too - the size limits mean I can't just grab a photo off my camera and send it, and the PS3 won't resize as far as I'm aware, so I have to put the image on my laptop, resize it, save a new copy, put it back on the PS3 and then send it.

Would that be the wookie sans arsehole?

He had a gammy leg. I didn't enquire about his wookie hole.

I keep having visions of going round to soongs virtual house and there being posters of all his ex girlfriends nude on the wall with his juice on them. Then on his tv he is showing movies of his dirty deeds.

Sorry Soong :)

No need to apologise, I have visions of that too!

Mine is vertical. Haven't noticed any problems.

There was a recent study that took place which proved the PS3 keeps cooler in the horizontal position. I've had my PS3 in both positions and I haven't noticed it to be any louder as it is now vertically.

It looks shit hot facing toward you vertically as well so that's the way it stays!

I've found a new video encoder for MKV HD rips, it's called MKV2VOB and obviously, it converts to VOB instead of MP4.

Is there anything useful that goes MPEG2 or VOB to mp4 or divx? I'd like to turn some of my DVDs into good quality but smaller files than their current vob status, and ideally make it so they also worked on PSP.

You dont need a study to say this, and I'll add that it depends how the ps3 is located. The heat comes out from "lip" under/next to the disc drive, so it's coolest whatever gives that the most room. If it's vertical on top of a stand then it will be reasonably cool, but if its vertical on a shelf under the tv with not much of a gap, then its a different story.

Thought I should mention, the Blu-Ray Movie -> PSP Movie functionality mentioned before works by having the PSP-format video on-disc, and not by converting it. So don't run off and stockpile BD-ROM movies yet, because it's all based on BD2.0 spec films that haven't been released yet.

First tests with Medialink are rather disappointing (my G5 mac connects via WiFi to the PS3) :

- for a start, many many DLNA protocol errors of type 2101 & 2103

- iTunes protected songs don't show up (duh) BUT NEITHER purchased DRM-free ones (iTunes Plus tracks)

- inconsistency in some AAC-tracks refusing to show up... for years now I've been encoding in 192Kbps AAC VBR, and while most files show, recently encoded albums (with Quicktime 7.2 an 7.3) have spottier records

- iPhoto integration (with iLife '08) works pretty flawless (even the new "Events" can be browsed), but some further expansion could be made

- Movies: like it was the case with Elgato's Eyeconnect, the record is BAD here. I had much higher hopes for Nullriver's transcoding capabilities, apparently fruitless... Even files specifically encoded with Handbrake's PS3 profile refuse to stream...

My feedback email to their programmers is on the way :(

I can't get it to play anything. Its got my Itunes Library fine, but it just wont play anything. Since the trial only lasts for 30 minutes you don't get time to sort it out either.
