The Hobbit Trilogy

It's amazing that the boss on newline said he gave Jackson total control on LOTR, it was a massive gamble but it paid off. Why not do it again? I guess they saw the Hobbit as a massive cash cow and nothing more. Anyway I can forgive Jackson entirely now I know a bit more. Such a shame.

I think you can probably lay a lot of the blame for that at the feet of WB, I mean look at the abject horrorshow they've made of what should have been a licence to print money in the form of the DC movies.

I'm not sure Jackson's particular OTT epic feel would've suited The Hobbit, personally. It could do with being subtler and I'm not sure that Jackson could resist padding out the film with 15-minute CGI action sequences involving thousands of trolls kickboxing or something.

Page one, people. Page one.

  • 2 weeks later...

I watched that girls vids on YouTube last night. I agreed with some of her opinions and wasn't aware of the politics that had gone on around the trilogy.

I did however feel like slapping her during the Hobbiton visit. I know she played it up for the camera but it still ground my gears. We Honeymooned in New Zealand in late 2011 including a visit to Hobbiton the day after The Hobbit crew left after 6 weeks. They had filmed the bookending scenes with Freeman, McKellan and Wood during that time. There were still props and bits of set scattered around that hadn't been removed yet.

The staff had only been let in that morning as it had been closed for filming. They were as stunned as we were at the makeover Jackson's team had given It. It was basically exactly as you see it at the beginning of the first film. It was beautiful.

We would give anything to go back to New Zealand and do it again. So watching her torn face as she and her daft pal trudged round really pissed me off.

As we were walking past Bag End I heard a familiar sound coming from one of the Hobbit houses below. There were a few workmen down there. Hearing the strains of The Black Keys emanating from the front door up to Bag End was a strange but memorable part of the visit.

Also one of the guides on the tour was called Horn Dog. With a straight face one of the other guides said "I'll just pass you over to Horn Dog for this part of the tour."

I watched one of her other vids - I forget which - and she starts munching on crisps with her stupid gob open. I closed it and will never watch another of her vids again.

That's a shame. You're missing out because she does know her stuff, and she's far from the worst offender when it comes to shoehorning annoying comedy YouTube Content Creator gimmickry into otherwise insightful videos. (I mean, we have a whole thread dedicated to Red Letter Media...)

Some of her recent ones I particularly recommend:

Her Disney film videos: Saving Mr Banks (I've never seen that film but this one is really good) / The Hunchback of Notre Dame / Pocahontas

Twilight and Stephanie Meyer being an acceptable target for fandom hatred

... and her whole series on what the Transformers series has to tech us about film theory (seriously)

Wasn't there's a five minute monologue about how amazing the Hobbiton experience is and how the staff are super nice and that it'll make you feel like a kid again? I think she went out of her way to emphasise that this isn't meant to be a downer about New Zealand.

She had annoyed me sufficiently by then that it felt pretty disingenuous.

There was about 2-3 sentences.
