is the wii really too expensive?

I dont understand how you can claim £180 with a free game on launch day isnt cheap.

Imagine a man says he will offer you a white box for £130 because that is a fair price. Now imagine the next day the man offers you the same white box for £180.

That white box, bought from that man, is too expensive.

Compared to a larger grey box that costs £425, the white box is still cheap. Compared to a giant space station that costs £200billion, the grey box is cheap. And so on.

The point is that £180 would have been completely acceptable if they hadn't spent the best part of two years going on and on and on about how they were making a console which would forgo cutting edge technology in order to provide an inexpensive but revolutionary console. When they spent so much time making a big deal out of the price, you at least expect it to be selling for about the same, if not less than their previous console. We're not.

It's not just what they said - the whole industry was saying it. Microsoft were going on and on about 360 + wii being cheaper than PS3. Is that even true anymore? EA were saying, during massive wii gushes, how it would cost around £120. Everyone was clearly led up the garden path as to the price.

I wonder whether either party are pissed off after all the golden PR quotes they gave about wii's unusually brilliant price tag?

Just because speculators got the price wrong, how does that make it too expensive. Remember that Nintendo never announced a price, so you can hardly claim they have reneged on one. They said it would be inexpensive, and when compared to the other consoles, it is.

For me it's more expensive than I thought it would be and more expensive than I think it should be. Of course, I'm no expert on the mass production of hardware and I don't really know what's going on inside a Wii. But my perception is that it's on a par with a Gamecube and the retail price does not match that perception, Wiimote and Wii Sports or not.

It's moved from 'absolute must have' status to 'I might, I might not'. Although that's not 100% based on price it's a biggish factor.

Lots has already been said here.. but anyway

1. Personally, I think Nintendo's marketing blurbs aren't compatible with their actual strategy.. if they did what their markteting says, they would have aimed lower, as they would have been in the impuls market: the price of expensive jeans is usually seen as the limit: 200 euros

2. If they want tyo emphasize the multiplayer thing (which i don't think they really have said, they wanted to emphasize the broader market) they should have bundled it with two controllers

3. for the broader market, maybe a single player impuls game would be a better bundle, but i'm sure it will be soon after..

at the end, i'll be buying it in march or something, not just because a little price drop is possible by then, but mainly because my wife is expecting december 9th..

The lack of dvd playback is irritating, as i'm moving house in march, and was planning to move all my old consoles to a nice room in the attick, and having just the wii including dvd below, for a nice clean look....

damn i'm looking forward to having my own gameroom in the attick!!

but £180 does seem cheap for what it is to me. plus they didn't actually state that it would be cheaper (or as cheap as) any of their previous consoles, did they?

i think this is just a knee jerk reaction from people who got caught up in the 'it's going to be £100!*' rumours.

a good point was raised earlier in the thread actually, that they shouldn't damage the perceived value of the console. i think this was a major factor in the gc's demise, joe public thought it was rubbish because it was so cheap. it also gave nintendo no room to move in price-drops to generate more interest.

if they launch at £180, i still think they'll get a fair slice of the christmas purchases due to it still being less than a 360. they can then maybe drop the price a touch around ps3 launch to create further interest.

i guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens though, but i really hope it's as good as i'm hoping it'll be and that the casuals realise this.

*insert your own statement here

As much as I really want a Wii (no pun intended) I've decided to wait a while and get it when there are a few more games and the price has gone down.

If I wanted it for christmas I'd have to have it as a joint birthday/xmas (my birthday is the 26th) from most of my family!

My God, some of you are so miserable!

Amazing that sharkenergy is handling the potential breakdown of his marriage better than someone are handling the Wii being £20 more than THEY expected!

People are posting their thoughts in the context of the thread. It's not about 'what's worse, your marriage breaking up or the PAL Wii price point?' and rightly so.

We do have a right to an opinion <_< .

Why don't you trundle off to SharkEnergy's thread and say 'People are dying every day in Africa, get some perspective!'? Then the rest of us can voice disappointment with well reasoned (and not-so well reasoned) opinions.

Is that Ronnie O'Sullivan in your avatar?

Anyways...of course you're right that there are levels of sadness and disappointment. It just seems that this is being blown out of proportion a little.

Almost like people were just waiting for something to complain about. I can imagine there were people refreshing the thread about the UK launch details praying that the console would launch in the UK in March with their reply already typed out in a word document, ready to be copied and pasted.
