Destiny: FIN

Hello there....

I'm a complete n00b on this now. Just bought it at the weekend and got myself up to level 15 playing through story missions. Must admit, I did one last night where I had to get into a big spaceship thing that was in a cave on the moon somewhere, and it was as good as pretty much anything Halo has done. Amazing music. Tense fights and great balance. I got my mate to come in on a couple of missions... which was fun... but he's level 40 which pretty much meant he battered the powerful characters before I even had a chance to look at them!

BUT - all this stuff you guys are talking about just seems completely alien to me. It's like you're playing a different game. I'm assuming it'll all become clear if I just keep doing what I'm doing - playing through the story quests. On my way to storys (I'm assuming the limited respawn areas are effectively 'instances' that are restricted to me and my fireteam) I'd often see high level characters bouncing around. Are then on their way to another mission - or are then doing something else? Should I join in or stay out their way?

Add me on PSN and I'd be more than happy to show you the ropes with some patrols so you understand the light system, and some of the mechanics of how you level. The end game is to get you on a raid so you get the most out of the game.

PS: Unless you created a Hunter in which case you'll have to find someone else. :quote:

If you just keep playing the story and levelling, further options will open up to you in time, and these will reveal some of the activities people are engaged in and talking about (Nightfalls, the raids, etc). So just keep playing. But obviously you'll pick more up by talking to people in parties and engaging in activities with them.

If you do spot something kicking off with higher-level characters, and it's happening right around you, you might as well join in. You may be woefully underpowered, but they should be able to do the heavy lifting and hopefully you'll get something nice out of it, or at least learn what it is they were doing. I'm thinking here, for example, of if it's a Taken event. But if they're just passing through en route to an instanced event (a strike maybe) then as you say you'll have to be in their fireteam to join them - they'll just disappear when they reach the threshold of the instance otherwise.

But yeah. Just chill, play the story, level up, and more things will become available for you to do. Better to start forming up with others on here to do some stuff though - even though most will be higher-levelled than you, we still all do low-level stuff often enough (patrols etc). You'll learn the mechanics quicker that way, and hopefully set yourself up with some buddies for more advanced stuff later.

Cool - cheers guys. I'll carry on as I am and add a few more of you to my PSN. Just a bit worried I hit some kind of a brick wall on the single player that means I need to wander around for hours just shooting things before I can progress - but I seem to have avoided having to do that so far.

And again - so far - it's brilliant!

What Gorf said; we kind of are playing a different game, but it's OK, you'll be playing it soon enough. As you head towards the level cap, the focus of your play will change. But for now, keep rattling through the straight narrative in the order it comes up, and do persevere on to the Taken King levels (which unlock at lvl25) because they're ace.

As for what those other players are doing: they might be on their way to a different mission, or they might just be doing a bunch of things that are relevant to higher-level characters in Patrols. (There are lots of reasons to Keep Patrolling as you level up). Once you enter the limited respawn 'Darkness' zone, yup, you're in an instance just for you and your fireteam.

We got as far as the [edited] last week with the late raid crew, fucking hell I cannot wait to give that another go this week. They should have a raid playlist where you can get paired with randoms or friends to launch a random encounter from the raid with some modifiers (like burns or something) every day, open only for those that have beaten oryx. Just a thought.

I've done the raid on 2 characters, managed to do a full start to finish run in less then an hour of playtime, won't be long until this is crota run levels of easiness.

My advice for the raid is find a team & stick together, practice, progress & gain lots of new loot. Sprinkle in a couple of people who don't know what they're doing & you'll likely want to punch someone but try and bring people along.

Nightfall: The Undying Mind (correct strike name) :hat:

Meridian Bay, Mars An ancient Mind, feared by the Vex themselves, hides among the channels of the Black Garden. Find this machine and end its existence.

Modifiers

Epic

Solar

Juggler

Catapult

Fresh Troops

Variks is selling a Pulse Rifle with (moderate) shank damage. Yes? NO! FUCK OFF VARIKS! Lol

Oh god. The worst strike ever with the worst modifier ever - Juggler.

Not looking forward to that.

Edit: Not related, but just found out that when you do the exotic sword quest, you get to keep your legendary sword. That is great news, as obviously you dont always want to use up an exotic slot for just the sword.

Oh and Balwur is up at Court of Oryx T3. Seems far easier than last week, and a hunter has already solo'd it apparently

Just been looking at the exotic sword quest line and it's got a kills in the crucible bit. Man, I hate that, I'm so shit at PvP and even shitter at getting heavy ammo. Going to be a frustrating grind. (What's happened to Mayhem? Would make like a life a little easier)

Question though, do you get a choice of exotic sword or is it related to the legendary type you choose? Really want a void sword but looks like I may have to start a new character to get it.

The PVP part wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. You can use it without ammo - it's a two hit kill but very slow, so best to soften them up first then switch to sword and finish them off. Knocked it out in a couple of hours after I found that out.

Is it really character locked? Wanted to give it to my Titan for Ruin Wings fun :(

Yeah the void one does a whirlwind attack, which looks kickass. The Solar one does a massive uppercut, which is great on single target mobs, and the Arc one fires a spinning arc blade at enemies, which seems to have pretty good range (the hunter who solo'd Balwur used this to kill the actual boss).

Once you have the sword, I think you can swap it to another character in the vault, but not sure. Same should apply to the exotic version.

You'll have to make a new character if you want more swords. I got solar on my Titan, going to get arc on my warlock and void on my hunter (all to match their new sub-classes)

Only the exotic version has the special attacks.

Arc for example.

Edit: just found this on bungies forums - map for all the Chest's that require keys/buffs to open (these never move or despawn):

Have you tried it Mark? I think they've toned down the burn multiplier so that should not be that big a deal. I have solar armour and have found it pointless thus far. I still burn the fuck up when taken captains start raining solar grenades.

Which is what I should have done. Im such a numpty.

I am so fucking lost with this conversation. What you get one blade per character and it's class locked? Is that right? And also, why is void better than solar. I decided to get a solar to have a different burn for my storm caller to deal with shields, can I not choose a different element for the exotic version of that?
