Glad you managed to get it done. Tried with a LFG myself this morning, managed to get him down to about 20% but the adds were out of control and the others didn't seem to have much of a gameplan. I wanted to try the bubble sword method but neither of the other two had mics and it would have been pointless trying to sword him on my own...

We had 2 warlocks (one lightning and the other solar, mainly to deal with the adds and their shields) and myself, a defender titan with weapons of light. They made orbs for me to pop the shield at the boss. The rest of the run was easy, but the boss was always a bitch, either hiding so we couldn't kill him, or spamming screams so we couldn't even leave the "safe" part of that area.

It took a hell of a lot of tries to get tactics down, but the one guy I was with was so determined to get the sniper he wasn't giving up, and checked a video on Youtube. We always killed the boss on our best attempts, but the adds were always far too numerous at the end for us to get them all. The video said the adds, and more importantly, the black orbs they spawn from need to be dealt with asap. The boss is not the main focus. Once we found that out, we changed tactic slightly. After about 3-4 "test runs" (one where one of the orbs to open the door refused to be interacted with....GG Bungie :hmm:), we finally killed the bastard and cleared the room. With a decent amount of time left. I cant remember how much, but it was a comfortable amount.

Basically, clean the adds out at the start (the 2 yellow cabal types with the shields have to go asap, but they didn't seem to respawn at all during the fight), with the titan popping the bubble to help. Use the sword mainly for these, but be careful not to get swamped. Weapons of light + sword = death to pretty much all the adds (the only thing you may have problems with are the arc shielded cabal, but we were lucky that one of the warlocks picked the arc sword). By the time all the adds are dead, the titan will probably have a super again, or be very close to it. Snipe the shit out of the boss now, or use heavy if not using a sword.

Rinse repeat until everything is dead.

I used Helm of Saint 14 as I was lucky with Xur over the weekend, and one of the warlocks had the

raid machine gun for the extra oomph on Taken

, but I think the last bit isn't really needed.

Light levels? I'm 293 or so, the "determined" warlock was only 288 and the other I think may have been 300, but light levels didn't really mean a lot for the damage. It was all about how to do it really, which when we sorted, only took a few tries.

Oh, on the kill I swapped to my Zhalo Supercell lightning auto rifle, and that proved to be good for clearing adds as well as dealing with the arc shielded guys. I had been using the Bhoolean Gemini before that. I also had a void sniper for dealing with wizards, and of course my lovely solar sword

Edit: I cant remember where I saw it, but someone had been putting false information out about the boss, saying if he dies the adds stop spawning, which is why we were killing the boss before the adds. Whoever this was has been a total dick to everyone yesterday trying to get this sniper. I can sort of laugh it off after the event, but for everyone who didn't get the sniper, that must have wasted so much of their time.

Ooff this post got far longer than I intended, sorry.

When we killed him only one of us got the exotic text btw. I panicked a bit, until I realised I had full inventory  It will go to the mail, so dont worry.

I also got 2 legendary drops during the whole time trying to get the sniper. Only 2. Sort that drop rate out Bungie :P

I did get a fair few 290+ blue drops mind.

So you saying the the black orbs will keep spawning a certain number of times no matter if he is dead? I think the fundamental problem all the times I tried yesterday (5?) was that we pretty much stuck in the first hallway. What we should have done in hindsight is gone clockwise round the room as a fireteam and kept clearing the adds and taking potshots at the boss. Staying in the tunnel doorways was pointless as you couldn't kill the black orbs at the back of the room or damage the boss half the time.

So as I Warlock what should I be playing? (Weapons are personal taste right?)

I liked Voidwalkers blastynovadeath thing, but have gone Sunwalker for the self res (although that seems to be a very late development)

Giving up on the Walker quest though - 7 melee kills in PvP! I tried pvp before (without quest) and died horribly whenever anyone saw me

Warlock is all about space magic!

I tend to only use Sunwalker when I know there is a good chance of a hero revive in a Nightfall or Raid etc - I don't really get on with the subclass at all outside that but there are others who think it is the bees kness - esp in PvP.

Basically it is going to be personal, another plus point of the game is there is so much variety and customisation you can setup for your own play style.

The adds only spawn from the orbs. I think the orbs stop spawning when the boss is killed, but if orbs are still up....

I did notice one arc shielded cabal taken come out of the back right door, but its probably only the shielded guys that come out of them. The normal adds are from the orbs.

We got the kill when I was popping bubble on the left side of the room, if that means anything. All the tries on the right side ended in failure. Probably means nothing though, as we werent killing the adds/orbs as much as in the last few attempts.

I will say that the dps needed was insane. Without a sword, especially a solar one, I think we'd have struggled.

And yes, we did try the "drop a blinding bubble on the boss and sword the crap out of him" tactic, but it doesn't really work that well due to the adds (you will be dead/low health before even getting to the boss). We didn't try clearing then swording the boss as it was just easier to shoot him when the room was cleared, so didn't bother.

From the patch release notes:

Xur

Three of Coins now provides a smaller increase in Exotic Engram drop chance when rapidly killing Ultras

Fair enough I guess.

Not really, as the drop chance was only so high due to farming one boss who has a checkpoint before him, and the boss could be killed with 4 sniper bullets and a rocket. Should have made it work on strikes only. Easy fix, and less farmable.

This, however:

Dismantling leveled-up Exotics now have a reduced chance to produce 2 Exotic Shards

Is bullshit though.

Not really, you'd just get organised fireteams wiping at the bosses endlessly. Much like Elder Cipher farming at Skolas.

LFG would be full to the brim with that nonsense too.

Maybe. But its far harder doing that, and requires more effort than going to Draksis, which is solo-able and has a checkpoint right before him.

People will abuse mechanics regardless. Loot cave showed us that. This fix also hurts the majority, who were probably using the coins on strikes playing normally, rather than the minority. I had an exotic drop off the Saber boss during the nightfall for example, as I'd popped a coin beforehand.

I guess we'll have to see how badly its been nerfed.

Hopefully Xur has something decent tomorrow.

Edit: nerf stormcallers*

*not really, otherwise I'd have had more trouble getting my Black Spindle last night :P

I know I said everyone has their own personal preference but, well, you're wrong - what do you do when you get a multi kill in the crucible and SPACE MAGIC pops up..... you dance in the space magic disco, thats what you do.

(I will allow you saying the mission to get the Darkside fizz is utterly brilliant tho)

Well played, Team Lyrical BazzaWave.

We haven't been able to get our raid team together much - I'd love to be raiding every night right now (or for as many nights as it takes) - but tonight on our first go this week we managed to take down the first two bosses, and we're hopeful of being able to continue Sunday, so maybe we'll get to the big guy then.

No raid armour drops for me though, goddamit. But I did get the Ghost, so that's nice. And the second boss fight was great fun to work out and execute after seeming impossible for the first half-hour or so. Probably one of my favourite boss fights of the series.

Cheers gorf, yeah we have struggled to get everyone together at the same time too and only really had a couple hours here and there.

Finally got to Oryx last night then who'd have thought, we killed him twice in one night!!

Speaking of loot drops I got 3 of the scout rifle just tonight, smart loot anyone?
