I think the best thing about it is that it was the first time for all of us. So it was - without wanting to over-dramatise the event - really fucking special for everyone. You could tell by the massive roar coming from everyone's mics as the boss turned to ashes just as a few of us bought the farm that this was a special victory that we'd shared. It's great to do that when it's a fresh experience for everyone there. I'd love to repeat the raid (and will, if everyone's up for it, several times - if only to get some actual loot, god damn it), but however much loot I get after this, and however many new raids come along, this'll be the one I'll always remember.

Yeah, that was special.

I also loved how, despite the game glitching us so we couldn't quit, we all just needed to reconvene in the Tower to sit in the warm glow of victory.

And pointing at that guy. That was funny.

Congrats on the Raid victory guys, quite envious.

Our team got to the final boss on Monday evening but despite our heroic best efforts we simply ran out of time and had to admit defeat at around 01:30.

It was our very first run through, all of us went in blind, and with very little help too (but thanks to those guys who did drop in to lend a hand), I think we had around 10 hours on the clock by the time we gave up, but a good couple of those were from that bloody Labyrinth.

Atleast we know what to do now it's just a matter of doing it.

I was actually a bit underwhelmed by the raid at the first checkpoint but now it's by far the most rewarding element of the game. As Mike said above, can see when we finally crack it being one of my finest gaming experiences and achievements!

Yeah, so I probably did over-dramatise it. But I actually will remember that one frozen moment in time when the big guy finally crumbled; the first split-second of when we whopped and hollered over his remnants; it's kind of a bonding thing when you all do something like this the first time after a lot of effort leading up to that one moment. This was one of those moments. Cheers for that.

Great to hear that you guys managed it on a second attempt so quickly. We (me, U-1, MW Jimmy, Finitetlight, Billy Brown and Soong) had a n00b squad running parallel to yours last week and just couldn't beat Atheon before we all succumbed to tiredness on Monday night. We only got a key piece of intel (that the cleansing bubble is actually an impregnable shield that you can shoot out of) after Soong went to bed and Raid-expert spatular joined. Much facepalming.

Did you guys do your first attempt blind? We did, and it took us 8 hours+ to even get to Atheon. Opening the vault was straightforward enough, but we spent a whole evening failing to defeat the templar. Our 'tactic' of bunching together and madly cleansing after the far-out oracles marked us just wasn't working, but after a fruitful 'strategy session' conducted by PM, Finitelight came up with the winning approach of spreading out and focusing on the oracles above all else. I think Billy Brown and MW Jimmy correctly theorised the 'enrage' hard time limit during this period, which was key.

We also spent at least an hour and a half, which I'll never forget, bungling around the labyrinth. I know that place like the back of my hand now. We explored - or at least thought we explored - every nook and cranny, trying to slide through narrow crevices, hitting invisible ceilings in bits we clearly weren't supposed to be in and re-opening empty chests which has respawned because we took so long. Even when Stebbo joined and told us roughly what to do, helped by a text walkthrough, we couldn't manage it. We resorted to YouTube in the end.

The gatekeeper bit wasn't too bad. We figured it out and nailed our approach pretty quickly. However Atheon totally kicked our arses. We never quite figured out what weakened him after a teleport (we thought it was to do with having the relic back in the Vault), which meant we weren't maximising the time we spent pummelling him. And, as mentioned, the shield's....ummm....shielding properties eluded me (I probably spent most time holding the relic). I was wasting my time firing its super at him. Other than that, we were getting there. We had the teleporting bits sorted - our tactic of sending a helper through the portal manually to help if the chosen ones were having trouble clearing the oracles was working really well.

The next thing I really need to sort is getting disorientated when I come back through the portal. It should be so easy, but nearly every time I did a full lap of the gate before jumping in the middle to help my ailing comrades. Funniest time was when I accidentally warped immediately away again, jumped into the middle, deployed the shield and wondered why it was so quiet. By the time I got back to the vault I was met with a bunch of skulls all huddled on the centre platform.

But after reading your reports, I'm convinced we too can do it in one sitting!

Well, we did have help at various points during last week's attempt, as we couldn't always fill our team with actual noobs. And on the last run, last night, we had someone who'd done it before up to Atheon, but had never managed to complete that last section. So the actual victory was fresh to us all, except that up to that point we'd had people with experience in at various stages (and we'd also got all the way to having several cracks at Atheon ending Monday night with failure, so it wasn't our first attempt, but our second). But it was still great to try it again the night after, and complete in one session what had taken us three nights the week before to fail to achieve.

You'll do it next time. Like we did - most of what had seemed difficult or impossible will seem easy(ish). That last fight will always be a swine, though. Too many things can go wrong for it ever to become a cakewalk.

Just so I understand the steps on last boss fight (raid)

1. Open the door shoot gatekeeper from doorway

2. Run left and activate plate, once gate is active 2 or 3 players go through to retrieve relic shield. Players left behind have to kill a shit load of harpies & those pain the arse Praetorian !!

3. Once the team returns with the shield everyone then runs to activate right hand side plate. Same again 2 to 3 players go in & retrieve shield. Those that are left out have to kick butt.

From here on I get confused I think

4. When the team returns everyone gathers in the center & Titan's activate defender shields. The relic bearer then activates his skill & we can shoot the enemy? Similar to the Templar fight?

When you have retrieved the first relic a conflux (tower) will spawn, minotaurs then start sacrificing themselves to it. So you need to quickly get the second relic and move to defend the conflux.

If possible someone slowing the sacrificing vex will give you more time to get the second relic.

The fact that it was pretty much our last attempt before bed made it even better...

Next week, same team?

Thanks that explains step 3, when the team returns you all defend the conflux.

What happens after that?

Once you have defended it long enough you get a checkpoint, a loot drop and Atheon appears.

Thanks, I think this is where I got to yesterday before I had to call it a night.

The Raid progress is it per player or only the fire team leader?

Well done it was way past my bedtime (old man needs his sleep). Hated the Mario jumping section again !!

On the maze section at the start last time I played the raid we jumped up into a triangle shaped hole to get a chest - did we miss this chest yesterday?

The jumping section took me 2 goes yesterday due to a slip up, well annoying.

I don't recall that chest, I know there's one before you get into te maze and then the one to the right - is there another?

I did the jumping bit first go.

Then fell off that ledge.

For all the people moaning about bad luck from the raid please stop :( I've done it 4 times and got chatter white and a scout rifle plus shards.

No raid armour so I'll be stuck on 28 forever :(

Looking forward to doing it again though this week and hoping for the best :)

So do you need to get a full set of Raid armour in order to reach level 30?

We got that one last night, we just took a different route to it after grabbing the Spirit Bloom chest.

Ok that explains the wandering path we walked after getting the spirit bloom chest. Thanks.

Did you guys do your first attempt blind?

Not exactly.

I think on our first go (we reached the Oracle stage of the Templar) jimtendo joined us, and he'd definitely complete it before. But he very kindly agreed to keep schtum and let us figure it out. There was obviously a lot of running around like idiots whilst jimtendo presumably silently facepalmed.

And then our subsequent attempts last week, we had one play where we had a veteran get us through the Labyrinth. And one of our squad had raided a few times, but never killed Atheon, so we were getting help with the familiarity.

But yeah, we didn't quite cross the line Monday night either. The need for sleep did us in.

You guys will ace it this week.

Next week, same team?

Definitely.

No problem mate. Anyone like to take the spare slot, there's a few of us going to do it on second characters as well if anyones up for a double raid.

There's one in the maze that involves going up a rocky path to the left of the corridor you enter by. You kind of have to go back on yourself, away from the Gorgons. I think that's the one. I was convinced I'd found the way out when I ended up in there, only to find an empty chest we'd looted two hours previously.

Not exactly.

We had a few ringers filling in when sleepyhead Soong went off to bed early each night. So we had a bit of help confirming our templar tactics, and then Stebbo actually throwing us off during the maze with his poor memory of what happened when he last did it! Then we had spatular help us with Atheon after a couple hours of fruitless struggling.
