So, I finished the Black Garden mission for the first time. The game went to the loading screen and then came up with an error message - no cutscene or Stranger's Rifle for me! At least it acknowledged that I'd completed the mission and I could go and talk to the Speaker.

I didn't even get to see the anti-climactic ending!

Well little ol' level 6 Hunter me headed for the crucible last night, probably the very first time I've played on-line multiplayer fps since I dunno Quake 3 about 15 years ago, and....................... I got well and truly smashed. To pulp.

Not helped I'm sure by most of the opponents on the other team being level 20 plus, all seeming to know the maps like the back of their hands, being able to jump far far higher than me, carry more powerful guns, wear stronger armour, with better gun stability, better grenades, better range, greater accuracy and not forgetting a lot more talent. My team lost both games of control that I was on for by a close margin with me contributing true bottom of the table performance (2 kills and 1 assist in game one and 1 kill and 3 assists in game two). I can't imagine my team mates being at all impressed :)

And for some reason I only got credited with finishing one game in the complete 5 crucible games bounty - perhaps I was dead at the end of the second game and that didn't count as 'completing' it?

Anyway..... onwards and upwards

Gear stats are disabled in standard Crucible matches so the only advantages people will have over you are the small bonuses on the item upgrades and their talent skill trees. But you'll definitely do enough damage to be competitive, especially in 6v6.

I've found it mostly comes down to how you move and approach battles, and how well you hold your nerve when you're in them. Few tips:

  • Stick with a teammate if possible. If you end up 2v1 in the open in this game, you're good as dead (unless you've got Super, but even then you'll struggle)
  • If you see your radar turn red, crouch - you won't show up on your opponent's radar, which'll give you the element of surprise.
  • I find the easiest way to get kills is with an Auto Rifle. Point it at their chest and let the recoil ride the shot up to their head.
  • When firing, if you both fire at reasonably the same time it's essentially a game of chicken in which it's easy to panic. Don't. Ignore the flashing screen, look at your reticule, hold that aim steady and trust that the inevitable recoil-led headshot will pick them off before they get you.
  • When one of your teammates activates their super, they drop orbs that can power up yours. Hoover these up ASAP.
  • Watch your Super bar and activate it when you see movement on your radar, otherwise you'll waste it.
  • Heavy ammo always spawns in the same places. Learn them. Then when you hear "Heavy ammo inbound" make a beeline for the nearest spot.
  • You'll probably (I'm a Hunter, and I did) get access at some point to a grenade that sits in one place and homes in on enemies when they get near. If someone is chasing you, nip round a corner, drop one, then take a few steps back, crouch, aim down your barrel, and wait for 'em to run round the corner and into the firestorm. Then finish em off as their health dive-bombs.

Hope that all helps. :)

I should be around, I really want to give the raid a crack if there are 6x level 26-27 guys on PS4?

You will need a lot of patience and time, it's not something to enter into lightly I imagine.

I should be around (level 27 warlock) from 7/8 but don't have any legendary weapons yet so don't know how helpful I'll be

Cheers LenHug! Have to go to bed and no clue how to communicate that in-game. By the way, the reason we were starting halfway through those levels is because that's where I'd gotten stuck when I was playing by myself.

Ha, no worries, I guessed as much. Glad to help, was good fun. :) Get yourself a headset and give me a shout if you want to do any more.

Had a great evening last night. Had been tootling around doing a few bounties when lyrical and Ben turned up and helped me out massively with a couple of the queen's bounties - thanks guys! So I now have my first two bits of legendary gear, the chest and helm. Well happy about that.

Also a classic moment on Mars I think for one of the strikes(?) where we all ended up inside the defensive bubble shield taking it in turns to punch out the last yellow psion who was in the middle between all of us. He didn't know where to turn, was hilarious. :)

Lvl 23 and rising, in fact just a smidgen under 24... :)

Oh and sorry couldn't join your invite hardbattle, was in the middle of a strike with 2 others and you'd gone by the time I finished.

I'm wondering the same! Do it at a higher difficulty?

I did it at the next level, but my armour isnt strond enough for the last difficulty. Googling says the next best way is public events or crucible to get strange coins.

If i didnt get that helmet last week id have enough

I had to send off my PS4 for repair, and now I'm stuck with the PS3 version. How bad can it be?

You can carry on playing with your PS4 character on the PS3, though I don't know how successful you'd be with strikes etc.

Handed in 2 crucible bounties last night and got another exotic bounty, this time for the Thorn handgun. I also finished the fusion rifle dismantling part of that other exotic bounty, only to find I need.....a fusion rifle to kill mobs in a nightfall strike

Game why do you taunt me?!?*

*with no fusion rifles....

Any Xbox One crew about tonight?

Too right. Caz is off out, so I'll be on all night, once I've got the boys to bed.

I want to see what sexy trousers you're rocking these days, Ian.

I might be able to give the Raid a go. PS4. Just turned L26 Warlock and have a brand new legendary scout rifle, but no legendary heavy weapons yet.

Not 100% sure I can make it, but if I can it will be after 10. How long do we expect it to take for first timers? Has everyone avoided the "speed runs" on YT? Max for me would be about 3-4 hours I think.

What happens if someone drops out by the way? Are the rest insta-bummed?

Whenever I can gather together a half-arsed 6 man fireteam.

You don't have to do the whole thing in one sitting.

I'll be on from about 8 onwards, supposed to be working but given myself the night off. Probably skirmishing/ crucible most of the night.

Edit. Just looking at the app, jesus i've put 65 hours into this already  . GOTY for me for sure.

Here's a sneak peak, it's all about the emblem these days though. Speaking of which, I found out yesterday the bungie hammer one I had was due to be being a 'legendary member' on Bungie.net.

Did the Phogoth strike on the moon earlier with a couple of randoms who were also level 14. Fuck me he was quite tough to kill. Took us a good 6 or 7 tries I think. Kept getting fucked up by wizards and knights that came out of nowhere. Got through it though and all had a good dance (before one of the other guys started shooting me in the head).

Just did my first Mars mission. The music man, the MUSIC! And how fucking good is it sniping the big dudes heads clean off? Pop, so satisfying. :omg:

I appreciate you guys have all done this shit already but I'm a lowly 16 still. Got my first blue bits of kit though now. Im coming!!!
