I'll be getting it I think as I now know it has the stats I want in a helm. Shame the special is a bit rubbish though.

I really love that exotic shotgun I got btw, did a couple of 24 strikes last night and the Cabal guys with the orange shield die in 2-3 shotgun blasts and it isn't even levelled up yet. The 2 randoms I was with would be shooting them for ages otherwise.

The key differentiator is that it's not just badges you unlock. You get all sorts of different loot types that do different things and tie into an intricate economy that let you progress and unlock a vast array of different skills, modifiers and perks.

For example, I was going for headshots with my hand-cannon last night because:

a) it's fun

b) chaining them together was getting me a temporary quick reload

c) I was levelling up my hand cannon in general, working my way towards explosive rounds and other delights.

d) simply playing the game well is progressing me towards other sweet-sounding skills for my class, such as a critical kill with a throwing knife generating a new knife instantly.

Add to that that the fact that I now need to dismantle uncommon guns to generate parts to buy certain gun upgrades - which suddenly makes picking up guns I won't even use rewarding.

It's like this satisfying, fun-filled feedback loop where simply enjoying the gameplay and mixing up your gear nets rewards in lots of interdependent ways. The rewards are mostly not cosmetic - they add variety and open up new play modes. This is further boosted by the fact that any nice load-outs can be brought into PVP.

I've NEVER been one to chase achievements unless the actual doing of the achievement is fun, but this is really fucking compelling.

You are right that PVE teams need to be similarly levelled, though. I'm sure Bungie will be trying to get round that.

Thats cool. I'd personally still prefer it if there was a pistol where chained headshots gave a quicker reload, another pistol had exploding bullets if you got 3 one shot kills in a row, another pistol would make enemies turn on each other if you headshotted 6 badguys in a row etc, but that all these pistols were unlocked from the start for everyone to use.

You did a good job of explaining loot and unlocks, I can totally see how thats compelling now, cheers. But what about levelling?

Say your primary gun has 100 attack, each bullet does 100 damage to the enemy. Except, the enemy has some sort of resistance to kinectic damage. If the enemy has 50 resistance, you only do 50 damage. Now say you have 100 attack and the enemy has 200 resistance. If you shoot him all you get it RESIST RESIST RESIST. This goes on numbers rather than percentages.

In the higher difficulties the enemy shields have crazy high resistances to all but the correct damage type, so you have to coordinate with your team to take them down instead of skating through pumping the wrong/same damage type into every enemy.

They could have gone the Left 4 Dead route and simply flattened all the levels in all of the modes and made everything available from the start. It wouldn't be a very good RPG hybrid if they did that though.

Unless the Bungie site doesn't tell the whole story, since the release of the game you've done two strikes, one in which you got 13 kills (did you quit out?) and another where you went in as a level 20 with two guys level 6 and 8. Which would have been either utterly impossible at level 20 or a cakewalk if you were doing the level 8 version. Sorry, but that's how RPGs work. Apart from Oblivion. Why not give it a proper go?

I didn't quit out the first strike, I got a disconnect. The 2nd one you say give it a proper go, but those are the levels of my friends, so how can i give it a proper go?

Yes.

The gunsmith sells better stuff as you progress. At first he sells stuff with max level 8, and as you progress he sells better stuff.

A quick look at the Bungie app (which is pretty good) says that right now my level 18 character could buy the worst gun on offer at the gunsmith, which is about the same attack points as the gun my mate at level 11 is using.

If you were level 20 and a mate started the game, then you could start a new character (glimmer is shared between characters) and buy some really crappy guns -using the vault to transfer them to your main. That way you could engineer it so that you had some starter kit.

This sounds like a good solution. Just one question. Why would I need to start a new character? Why not just take that gun with my current guy?

JESUS

You'd only need to do that if you wanted to start playing with a mate who was literally starting from scratch and you were level 20. My level 18 could buy level 10 stuff. My level 12 can buy level 6 stuff. And anyway, I've got a few old weapons hanging around.

But yeah, it should be an option, not something we have to work around

Oh right. Thanks man, will give that a go for sure. Might solve all my woes. I'm guessing thats what the lock up is probably for in the first place.

But more than that, I feel like Bungie have compromised their own principles to create this.

I think it is a bit presumptuous to say this. They could be incredibly proud of the game - maybe they didn't want to stick by the principles they had for Halo - maybe it was creative freedom that allowed them to make the decisions that you don't like? Maybe there was some publisher pressure - but given the past of Halo and the immense success, I'd say what they done is pretty risky to deviate that and to risk alienating people like you, so I doubt they were pushed to compromise on what they wanted.

I'll happily be a fan of a developer, but I won't expect every game to make to be one that I love or make it with my preferences or my expectations in mind.

Cheers Wavey and Harsin. That was far too bloody difficult! Couldn't jump on the mic cause my nephew was going mental in the same room and didn't think you'd want to hear him scream in your ears!

I thought when Harsin jumped in we would do it :(.

The exotic helm that Xur sells is odd. Check this pic

img1473_03.jpg

The one you can buy only shows Strength 76 and Light 21. Where's the Intellect? And how come the Strength is lower in the pic? Will the stats change as you level the helm up? I wants the Intellect + Strength, and am loath to part with that many coins if it only gives Strength

Oh Jesus. I just saw this piece of Exotic armour for Titans. I want this so bad.

The Armamentarium (image is big, so linked instead)

One of the upgrades is "Carry an Additional Grenade"!

The other two upgrades are "Carry more Heavy Weapon ammo" and "Carry more Special Weapon ammo" - Essentially the only way of getting to carry more heavy weapon ammo.

Ok that gun buying trick worked a treat. Partied up with my mates and we all bought the same level gun, had a blast. Thanks a million. Its a bit of a ballache going to the tower and shit, but at least it works now.

Craig, now I know this game isn't 100% perfect, but what game is? Anyway, just try and look at the positives instead of constantly appearing as though you're determined to not like it. Fair enough if you genuinely don't, but if that's the case then stop playing it. I'm sure there are loads of other games playing it.

I'd be much happier if you found the love though. It really is something special.
