Destiny: FIN

I've only just started and have reached the lofty heights of level 3 fannying about in old russia but I am enjoying myself none-the-less. On the combat front is it usual in Bungie games (I've never played Halo!!) for the enemeies to never really pursue you? I've been doing a lot of off piste exploring and have bumped into some rock hard enemies in a fair few places but all of these have only pursued a very little distance if at all as I've scuttled off

- for instance the very first boss was easy to kill just by popping my head out and sniping him a bit and then popping behind cover again for a reload and a breather

That said I've still managed to get killed a few times but, in terms of pursuit, I'm assuming the game has been made purposely forgiving so as to encourage exploration

That doesn't make much sense to me as an explanation though, I'm only slightly further than you and despite the space available there doesn't seem to be any need to explore because bar your destination there's near sod all else to bother looking for.

So, having found someone in my timezone (Len and his mate!), I played my first bit of online play since moving to the States, last night. Went to join Len and Avuncular but their fireteam was full (although the error was: you're too low level) so started playing the Moon with my hunter. As luck would have it, Len popped in a few minutes later and my wife was startled due to me suddenly starting to talk at the TV. Anyway, the seamless way Len could hop onto my game was ace, I've not seen that before. And of course, multiplayer is such a different game, absolutely fantastic. I couldn't hear Dinklage over the banter on the headset, but whatever, was all kinds of fun. Did make me realize I need a new headset though, the default one doesn't cut the mustard for when there's directional sound.

Len explained the sort of skill trees to me too, I didn't realize you leveled them based on actually doing stuff, so for example all those grenade kills finally opened up the grenade with the little bots that fly out and find enemies. I should probably read a noob guide.

I didn't get into Halo+sequels online, as I was busy playing WoW and the like, so I appreciate Destiny may be a bit of a rehash for certain people. I'm finding it 110% pure fun, though.

I'm sort of exploring for explorings sake I guess. There's all sorts of tunnels and underground rooms that I've come across by choosing to ignore the compass destination arrow (or by following it but perhaps not the way I was supposed to). Originally it was me seeking to outflank enemies by going underground that led me to my first batch of super tough mobs and I then dutifully took them on thinking that I could/was supposed to kill them :)

In the main I would say Bungie have succeeded so far in bringing together people from different gaming backgrounds and providing them with content. E.g I've not touched PvP but will be perfectly happy replaying story missions at higher difficulty once this opens up after I reach level 20. Others on the raid streams have been boasting of doing 25 strikes a day just to get their guys super levelled for today. Obviously what those guys do tomorrow is another matter....

So that crucible gametype that all of my friends and I really liked 'salvage' was only available at the weekend. And now i'm back to control which we all agree is kinda shitty. Amazing decision

This just seems crazy to me. Why wouldn't they just have all the gametypes available all the time?

To not dilute the player base perhaps. Also to force people to mix things up? Additionally there is more than just control available in the crucible anyway, I've only played 3 matches and I've opened up an different game type.

I can see why they'd want to mix things up a bit and switch game types around, but it's pretty annoying when you've got a part-completed bounty on the Salvage gametype and no way to complete it until it returns at some unspecified future time.

Yeah that is annoying, I'm not saying it's right and I don't think the balance is right at the moment. But I think at this point with the base split between PvP and PvE having too many game types would be counter productive and just mean matchmaking would take longer than it already does.

How long is the raid taking on average then? Judging by the streams. Also has anyone put the raid on Youtube yet?

They've been at it 5 and a half hours now and i suspect are getting severely fatigued, but I suppose the kudos of being first to finish is keeping them going (along with other stimulants).

That's why I gave up on the exploration already really, there are loads of cool nooks and crannies and tunnels... all completely empty. Whether the tough mobs do have anything of interest nearby I've no idea because I can't scratch them and they can knock the shit out of me, there's nothing immediately visible though so I don't have the temptation or inclination that I might get in Dark Souls to try take it on despite the odds, for example. So I don't know what the point of them is at the moment, whether it's something to come back to or whether it's just to keep a bit of interest if you are overlevelled or what.

Yeah, that's where the Open world RPG comparisons start to kick in and the game comes up short, for example you expect high level enemies to be protecting a nice chest or maybe tucked away there is the corpse of a dead traveller and a note which kick starts a quest. For example, has anyone killed off the levels 18s in the bunker in forgotten shore? I'm betting there is no specific reward for doing so. See also the grotto.

Yeah, it's not a massive problem. I'll just cancel the bounty, it's not like they're in short supply or anything.

I can imagine that more people will be watching Raids on Twitch than they will be playing them through themselves. Potentially quite a clever move by Bungie - having these ludicrously hard, time-limited events that people can spectate on, and vicariously play as part of a community.
