Destiny: FIN

I don't get a lot of play time, so decided to roll a titan last night, and put my hunter on the bench until I can get some multi player going. I prefer a glass cannon, but I spent a bit too much time dancing around trying to avoid close quarter action, despite the knife.

I suppose I could join randoms, but what's the etiquette for joining in with mukkers? Only you night owls are awake when I play, is it ok to just click to join someone's game?

Sure. That's what friends are for.

It's like they have the ingredients and the recipe for the greatest cake the world has ever seen since the World Cake Expo 1907.

And some how, they fuck it all up putting the sprinkles on at the end and they go all over the floor and the bits that shouldn’t have sprinkles have fucking sprinkles on but that doesn’t make the cake better.

And so, the whole world are just like, WTF?! Have you seen the other cakes from last year? How could you have that recipe and shit in your own mixture.

Hopefully, come a few DLC packs and updates they can fix some of the flaws.

Mainly the amour upgrade system (I want some variety), the hunting out of chests (how much fucking Spinmetal do I need! Why cant I find anything else.), the Tower is too large and the linking up online with friends seems a little bit awkward (not that I have many)… oh, an more dance move, lots more.

I have put 26hrs in and I enjoyed it for the most part but its parting company with me tomorrow and its getting sold while I can still get some sexy $$ for it as I can’t see me playing it much again this year.

That weekly strike which is a Level 22 Hard variant of Devil's Lair is really good. A proper challenge, but manageable. How the game should be played.

It also gave me my first Legendary Engram drop. I wooped at its purplely goodness (about died running to grab it lol). I then got it decrypted...blue pistol.

Just had something weird happen, I was in the cosmodrome when I got a message onscreen that "the enemies are moving against each other!"

A minute later loads of high level Hive and Fallen flood out of opposite ends of the area and start nuking the shit out of each other!

Me and another lvl 24 guy got stuck in and I got a legendary engram :)

Turned out to be that heavy weapon machine gun "zombie apocalypse wf47"

Halo: Shit story, fantastic world, amazing combat - lauded by everyone.

Destiny: Shit story, fantastic world, amazing combat - lauded by some, hated by too many

I wonder why that is? Have FPSs moved on that much? Had the hype been too much? Are people rushing through it without taking in the nuances of its combat?

It's certainly nothing to do with the core mechanics of the game, which, to me, are pretty much perfect. Ah well, I'm enjoying it immensely. I just wish everybody was.

The parallels are uncanny. What a difference a decade makes.

I got that full on MMO feeling of being somewhere I shouldn't be for the first time tonight. Decided to head back to Earth as it's a while since I'd been there, and just have a wander. I headed off through The Divide to The Refinery and discovered The Grotto, which is a level 20 area packed with nasties. I'm currently level 17 but I thought "what the hell". Ended up feeling properly badass taking out several level 20 Wizards, Knights and a Shrieker, although it jammily killed me with its death blast cheating shite. I drew the line at the Ogre I spotted down a side corridor though. There's pushing your luck and there's pushing your luck. I was surprised to find that if you press on through, you come out at the Forgotten Shore. Some lovely vistas out that way.

Edit - The point I totally forgot to make was that it would be nice if it rewarded stuff like that in some way. Taking down a Wizard three levels above you for 25 XP is harsh.

Loving this game. A lot of the criticism is valid, given I'm in space fighting the flood as a spartan with my sidekick guilty spark.

But. It's just so fun. Played the moon strike with shook and some random, and it took us ages (I was lvl 11 when we started.) but when we took down pogoth it was such a sweet victory.

Then after we finished dancing I went to the tower and was given the bounty of killing pogoth. Ffs.

It was fun, although I thought my level 17 status would have come in more handy! Tactics are definitely required for the harder moments this game brings.

Let's do some more. 360 for life. We should get tndom in for some fireteam action.

I just wish I had more time to play it, Destiny has not been a very productive addition to my self-employed lifestyle.

Well, first of all I'd disagree that Halo had a shit story. It had a fairly compelling central thread that admittedly meandered through a couple of levels, but there was generally a pace and urgency to situations. At the very least, you had an idea why you were doing the things you were doing.

I'd also argue that the combat, while excellent, doesn't have the depth of Halo. There were more tactical options in the opening level of Halo than there have been in my first few hours here.

The decade you refer to also saw Bungie evolve as a game maker. The narrative of ODST was leagues ahead of this, yet equally bitty and episodic. Reach was, frankly, fantastic. For me, this is a step back from both.

And I think that's where all the negativity I'm feeling is coming from. It's a step back from where they were in many ways. Still brill, and I'm still loving every second of it, but I'm not sure direct comparisons to Halo CE are particularly relevant in the way you're implying.

Is there a good FAQ anywhere for this?

Got questions around the armour and weapon systems, for instance is there any benefit to wearing a matching armour set? If not is there a reason is shouldn't just wear the best I have and dismantle the rest? Likewise with guns etc.

Except:

Halo: Very fitting and enjoyable first installment of the story, fantastic world, amazing combat - lauded by everyone.

Destiny: Shit story, fantastic world, amazing combat, billed as/expected to be something it isn't - lauded by some, hated by too many.

I see it as a beginning.

Really loving this game now, took a fee hours getting into it.

It's much better playing in teams and had a good couple of missions with evo and ryanski.

On top of that tesco refunded me £10 today for the Tshirt they didn't send me and £5 reduction at release.

Destiny plus a nice headset for £30 maybe the best bargain I've ever had.

I'm going to enrol on a computer games design degree, then after three years I'm going to spend another two years on a masters. Then I'll spend a few years in the industry gaining experience. Then I'm going to fire off application after application to Bungie until they take me, even if it's the lowest level job they have. Then I'm going to find the son of a bitch who decided you should have to watch the cutscenes every single time on the daily heroic story missions and also made them unskippable and punch him right in the dick. The next day I'll quit and go back to my chosen career.

I bet it's the same bastard who made everyone sit through the space helicopter bit again and again in the first level of Halo Reach.

I wish I could upvote this five times.

I'm way behind you guys (level 10), but so far I've mostly been using hand cannons. I can't remember the last time I used a rifle, if I'm honest. Maybe level 2 or something. Is this a mistake or not?

Not really. Use whichever weapon type fits you best - they all have positives and negatives.

Not necessarily, though I found their small clips and long reload times unsuited to some more intense battles. My go-to gun is a pulse rifle at the moment, though I sometimes switch to a scout rifle depending on the mission/enemies.

I'm going to try and get shot of my no-barcode copy tomorrow. I properly hate it, the more I think about it. It's got the right gunplay, it looks pretty decent, and all of that - but it's no fun when playing alone, and that's a big no-no for me. Also, as many have said, the story is complete shit, and isn't in any way making me want to go on.

Well, for one thing I think at least Halo actually bothered to try and tell you the story. I'm not even sure there's enough story in Destiny to determine whether it's shit or not, I've just seemed to be going from point to point on a map screen for little apparent reason. Regardless, this must be so different on a platform where other people are actually playing it :(
