Destiny: FIN

Has the FPS world moved on, or have tastes changed?

Personally, between the full game and the Beta, I've played Patrol on Old Russia for about 6 hours -just dicking about shooting stuff and speeding around on my Sparrow. It's not got old yet...

I could have sworn they said you can use a psplus membership across all accounts on a console, but for some reason I can't connect to any invites without a popup wanting me to buy Plus

Double check that the account with Plus has the machine set as its Primary PS4.

Another possibility is that the Plus subscription just ended, as I and a few other people had to renew on the 6th.

That's probably because Destiny offers absolutely none of those things. It doesn't even have randomised enemies, everything is very rigidly scripted.

That's not true is it? If you play Patrol you get random groups of enemies scattered about. The enemy types seem excellent so far. Far too soon to make a judgement about how they compare to grunts/elites/jackals but certainly way better than the Prometheans from Halo 4.

I've not played Patrol much so you may well be right, the bit I did play felt a bit aimless though, with odd people scattered around and no challenge (despite me being some levels lower than many enemies). If enemies are randomised then I am mistaken but I thought the same mobs respawned over and over.

Think we just need a few more beacon mission types on Patrol, and perhaps a few more random 'special evening incoming' things, and I'd be playing this for the forever.

And yes the mobs do just respawn on Patrol in the exact same grouping, i.e. 1x captain, 2x.Vandal, 6x Dreg, 6x Shank. Just need to mix that up too. They do seem to randomly spawn a yellow elite enemy though.

Oh, and another thought... one of the thrills in an MMO is venturing into an area that's way too high for you and seeing ultra dangerous mobs with no chance whatever of you being able to take them down. Kind a gives you a hint of what's in store for you when you get further into the game. Especially when you see lvl 70 players and you're in awe as to how easy they take them down and the super cool gear they're loaded with. You don;'t get that yet with Destiny.

There are a few tunnels on Earth with [??] enemies, but it does't feel right yet, perhaps because there's no incentive to take em on? Like if there was a 30% chance of a rare drop or something you might see players have a more risk/reward approach to engaging high levels mobs?

Sorry, a bit random musing. ;)

The respawns can be absolutely nuts in this, and I'm saying this as someone who rated Far Cry 2 as his favourite game of the last generation. I was on patrol in Old Russia and came to a large courtyard in the centre with a bunch of tough knights and mobs inside, after spent five minutes taking down the first one we moved up about fifty feet and encountered two more, retreated back slightly and the first guy had already respawned with his entire group no more than 20-odd seconds later. We could still see the entire area they had respawned into from where we had moved.

I'm only a couple of missions in, and happened across some tunnel leading down somewhere. Think it was an area with planes. Anyway, down it went until I found an open area. Saw some bad guys, pulled the trigger. Noticed they were level 26, I'm level 4. I was being so careful until that point, trying to get the 100 kills without a death reward.

Also, after a couple of hours play, I still don't know what half of you are going on about. Lots of lingo to learn, I think. Not even sure where to enter the crucible, which sounds like PvP.

To be honest I agree with pretty much everything he says in the review, but I'd give more weight to the positives of the gunplay and art design.

Can't see how you think it's comically negative?

I thought that slagging off Bungie for making a game that was accessible to lots of people is unduly negative, as if somehow it's bad to try and make a popular game. I also thought that criticising the environments for being empty was crazy given that you are cruising around a post apocalyptic area filled with deadly aliens, what do they want, loads of pointless Assassins' Creed shit? A tavern on the moon the with space beer and mini games?

I do wonder if some in the press have had their noses put out of joint in some way.

There's less subconscious desire to be the first with a "Wow!" review if you've been spending days on public servers with all us plebs I suppose. But it's clear quite a lot of people haven't been wowed by it.

I can totally see and agree with many of the criticisms, I've just been really enjoying it so far.

I don't think the reviews are overly negative, I just think we aren't used to journalists actually calling things shit without being scared of the developers wrath.

Sometimes its upsetting when you really enjoy a thing and someone else hates it, but that after all is why reviews and even forums exist.I think destiny is the marmite gaming needing, those who see it as a simple space cowboy loot fest can't get enough, those craving any more are left unsatisfied and yearning more, which will sadly come in paid dlc. Personally I'm glad that my feelings from the beta carried onto the retail and I have potentially saved thousands of pounds In endless dlc and sequels.

Destiny to me is like going to a world class restaurant and buying a steak, you pay full price but what is brought to you is a delicious slither of steak. The recipe is a straight copy of the shop down the street but with a slight twist that you cant get elsewhere. It fills you up but you can see the chef has already cooked you twelve more slithers of steak but you can't have them yet and you have to buy one slither at a time months apart. Despite it being right there. And your starving. Damn steak.
