Destiny: FIN

Yellow means they're elite enemies with higher than usual stats but a higher chance of dropping something nice. Same as most MMOS, Diablo 3 too.

Shield bars are always white, when I talk about shield colour I mean the colour of the actual shield effect in the game. E.g. when you shoot a Vex hobgoblin the first thing it does is fire up an orange shield for a few seconds.

Orange shield: Weak to solar damage

Blue shield: Weak to arc damage

Purple shield: Weak void damage

Or to make it REALLY simple:

If the shield is orange, shoot orange stuff at it

If the shield is blue, shoot blue stuff at it

If the shield is purple, shoot purple stuff at it

It does sound simple but as an experienced RPG player I've learned that - normally - if you shoot fire at a fiery enemy it won't do anything and you should use the opposite element. I shall re-think my Destiny strategy in light of this information though.

I guess their logic is that the enemy isn't elemental at all, only the shield they're using. It's another example of a strange mix of RPG and Halo mechanics, some of it seems to be really throwing people, even those well versed in both genres.

I wonder if, back in the Halo one days, people had the same puzzled conversations about regenerating shields, only carrying two guns, etc.

@Moz: that's what I was whining about before - the enemy that was the target on the public event had a yellow health bar. Presumably, that's not a damage type thing, right? It was just bastard hard - which makes it a bit odd that it was so tough that two players throwing everything they had at it couldn't even take the shield down.

My biggest gripe is that up to this point (level 10) I have yet to have a single memorable moment or fight. I cannot distinguish one mission from the next. There was that dark room where you get rushed by the flood, but it's just all so generic and blah. Shooting is fine, levels are gorgeous but they're totally non interactive, PvP is noticeably inferior to Halo... There's nothing here that is BETTER than anything from last gen. Nothing that pushes things forward.

What aren't people understanding about this type of game then? None of the criticisms I've read seem particularly unfair, it's also worth noting that things may be exacerbated depending on the platform which is perhaps why, being on PS3, I'm finding the much touted social side a bit underwhelming for one thing.

And don't know if you're referring to elsewhere, but all I've seen on here was one person saying they thought the AI in Borderlands was slightly better so that's blowing things out of proportion a bit even if they were wrong.

Sorry I should have said I wasn't specifically referring to this forum or any specific poster in this thread, I tend to read a number of forums and therefore have read a number of views on Destiny.

I think there's been a few complaints about the game but I was referring specifically to some people who came to this game expecting a more linear single-player style experience. Whilst I'm sure the majority knew what Destiny was I think some people have picked this game up of the back of the huge advertising and hype and not played the beta/alpha and it's just not been the type of game for them and that reflected in some of the comments about the game.

I've read the Borderland comparison a few times (again beyond here) particularly comparing the AI a number of times and it was an example of a criticism that doesn't feel quite true or right. I didn't think I was blowing things out of proportion but maybe I choose my words badly.

Yeah it just means it's hard as nails for the level. WOW has a yellow (well, gold) dragon around elite enemy profile pics, Diablo has a gold border around the standard health bar. I've come straight from Diablo 3 to this and it's a surprisingly natural progression.

I've come across this guy twice now (if it's the feller that appears in the Forgotten Shore) and have failed to kill him twice. Both times there were only two of us, once in beta and once in live.

I'm completely the opposite though, I'm in the know nothing group but came to the game expecting (or hoping for, at least) something that wasn't a linear single-player style experience as I'm not particularly a fan. Hoping for a PSO for the modern age, maybe. As it is though, I've been thoroughly underwhelmed so far but I've not played much. The lack of interactivity is particularly disappointing, and some background story I didn't have to go online for would've been nice. The tower in particular is just soulless.

The thing is while things don't run straight at you as much as in Borderlands, the AI in this doesn't seem anything special either. For the two "die and you'll restart" bits I've done all I had to do was run into the room to activate the boss battle then retreat to the door and pick off the few things that run at me but never chase much beyond the door. They're not worlds apart.

I'm really enjoying the tweaked enemy levels on Explore, went to have a wander through the Refinery when I was Level 4 and ran into some Thralls. "Ha ha!", I thought, "Behold your deadening at my deadening stick!", about four seconds before the Level 8 bastards removed by my skin to use as wallpaper in their horrific subterranean underhive.

Next time I brought a Vanguard shotgun. And the pain. Ab omnibus, in nihilum, assholes.

I've only just reached the point the beta stopped so would like to experience more but I've had enemies run at me, hang back or retreat when under fire and wait for an opportunity to melee me if that's the type of enemy they are. Equally the bosses behave differently (i.e. the spider tank). I don't think the AI is a weak point personally.

Yeah, enemies with shields will take cover to recharge shields. Enemies will teleport away when you launch rockets or throw grenades at them. They'll flank you by jumping above you, travelling along and dropping down behind you. Even the thralls will run around AOE grenades like the nova bomb rather than running through them in a straight line and dying. Many Vex will keep shielding themselves until you pop their heads off, at which point they charge at you. Enemies don't do that thing where they all know exactly where you are the second you shoot the first guy either (except the Vex, because it's part of their storyline).

I've really enjoyed fighting the Vex so far. A nice mix of desperate struggles against overwhelming odds with the goblins, to a couple of nail biting firefights with three minotaurs and a couple of harpies all at once. Cue me popping off shots, taking cover, trying to flank whilst not getting flanked myself, desperately trying to recharge health and shields, cursing how useless the titan grenades are, punching a Minotaur to death in a last ditch effort to survive. Epic stuff.

Weird how everything has typical fantasy names, though!

I'm enjoying this a lot actually. I've long had a problem with mindless non-stop deathmatch games that my friends lap up in CoD and often co-op stuff is tacked on but some of the games I was having with forumites yesterday (Graham_S, Ricky DVT in one sesh and Lyrical_Donut and robzilla in the other iirc) was a hell of a lot of fun.

My only real gripe that I do have with it is that so far at least (level 12 missions) there's BUGGER ALL to anyone of the missions apart from 'shoot everything in the face'. Which is fun but would have been nice to have the option to do something a bit more RPG-y if you wanted to, or I dunno, do a delivery on your sparrow to another colony or some nonsense.

I appreciate that I'm in the minority and that's why there isn't any of that and it's still being decried by the masses as not being enough like CoD (because it's a different game, pay attention at the back) but a bit more would be nice.

Although, to give it the benefit of the doubt, the levels seem very high in comparison to the amount of missions I've seen so there might be some variation to it. There is undeniable potential that this could be a very cool open 'world' (not in the GTA sense) game where bungie release extra bits and bobs and events happen and so on. I hope so anyway because otherwise my enjoyment may well wear thin a bit quicker.

It is undeniably more fun with a fireteam though and I've never played an FPS with any of you fellow forumites so thanks all for either accepting invites or joining me etc. Chuckles were had so I'm assuming I managed to hide the fact that I'm a massive bellend quite well :D

Imagine securing someone like Peter Dinklage for the voice work of the main npc and being all excited - "He's popular at the moment due to game of thrones! We've captured the Zeitgeist!", Bungie exclaim. And then he turns up and delivers the bland, can't be arsed voiceover that's in the game. People in the recording studio with fixed grins and saying through clenched teeth 'yes peter, that was perfect', all the while thinking of the millions of dollars they've just wasted.

This fascinates me because a good actor needs a good director, and the games industry - in its insistence to *re-learn everything film-makers mastered years* ago from scratch - is still not hiring the talent; evident in lacklustre performances you hear from even the big names.

Gotta be honest, it's seemed that way to me so far. You can lose enemies but as soon as I shoot one they all seem to be alerted to my position even when I'm sniping
