Destiny: FIN

The announcer in the Cruicible had me in stitches today. He's like a geography teacher trying to control an unruly class. One of the audio clips is him saying something like "They've got all the control points..." in an urgent, seething tone, like he's going to have a proper rant when he gets to the staff room.

It's just occurred to me, there's no custom games in this is there, unless I'm missing something...? Just the 4 main playlists.

There's the stirrings of something brilliant in here from what I've played, it's a shame it'll take 20+ hours of grinding to see if there's any real promise behind that initial glimpse. And then another 20+ hours if I want to switch classes... is this really what people want these days or is it just what everyone expects?

Mixed results with this, started tonight, quiet at first..but then enjoying it, up to level 5 almost. Spent 45 mins in a mission with 2 other randoms levelling up on enemies....disconnected, due to the public server being temp unavailable or some bullshit. Ended on a real sour note.

Had a good couple of hours with Jon on here tonight. Some fun laddish memes happening as usual.

Look at these three fucking moon pigs (princes on the moon)

Combat is to die for. Could patrol for hours (and will). Loving the darker tone compared to Halo. Level stuff causing a slight issue with me playing a few hours (than Jon) more; I feel like a badass storming in for kills but can imagine it's a shit feeling the other way around. Should be good when we all cap out and start the raids.

Think the fact we are racing home to play and laughing our heads off means Bungie have provided the goods.

Love it.

so if i've read it right the first Raid launches on September 16th entitled Vault of Glass. Guess Bungie has timed it as most people would probably be level 20 by then.

Also read about space combat in flyable ships. It's all a bit vague really and maybe the slow reveal is what its all about? There are 7 MP maps in the crucible with one being the PS4 exclusive.

I really think (hope) that Destiny will reveal itself over time, that they've staggered regular content including large expansions which add new planets and raise the level cap. The more I hear of it the more it seems to be the case, but we'll see.

There are 10 crucible maps according to the destiny wiki, might be wrong though

500 staff. Over how many years?

Blanket advertising in high vis areas.

Dinklage voice and Paul McCarty.

The list goes on.

Yeah but you hire those staff for a reason, its not particularly long or big in content, the engine isnt cutting edge (4 versions admittedly), advertising doesnt come into the game budget, Dinklage's voicework is bland, the list doesnt really go on all that long. Its good im enjoying it, but not 500million good?

So I checked the weapons on the pvp rep vendors and they were all meh for me....until I saw The Calling from FWC

Its main ability is called Firefly, which you might think is cool regardless, but its what it does is really amazing - "Precision kills with this weapon cause the target to explode." Not sure if these weapon abilities are randomised or not, but who's with me and the FWC?

Can we put this $500 million thing to bed.

Back in May, Activision Chief Executive Officer Bobby Kotick revealed that the publisher will invest $500 million in Bungies upcoming shooter, Destiny. Since then, that figure has been associated with the development and marketing budget of the game, but Bungie recently said it isnt accurate.

Responding to a question from a fan, Bungies Eric Osborne repeated the developers Chief Operating Officer Pete Parsons explanation: For marketing you'd have to ask Activision people, but for development costs, not anything close to $500 million, Parsons told GameIndustry International in an interview. I think that speaks a lot more to the long-term investment that we're making in the future of the product.

Well the $500 million is thought to be the investment for the life of the IP, over 10 years or so, not just for one game. Not sure if that amount includes marketing.

EDIT - What Harsin posted basically.

Imagine securing someone like Peter Dinklage for the voice work of the main npc and being all excited - "He's popular at the moment due to game of thrones! We've captured the Zeitgeist!", Bungie exclaim. And then he turns up and delivers the bland, can't be arsed voiceover that's in the game. People in the recording studio with fixed grins and saying through clenched teeth 'yes peter, that was perfect', all the while thinking of the millions of dollars they've just wasted.

Will raids be like a weekly challenge or something? I.e not disc based content but something bungie will continue to drop into the game?

I expect the maps will be set and won't change, but they may keep altering the challenges, bosses and loot.

If it's anything like WoW I expect you'll only be able to play them once and then have to wait a period of time for them to unlock again (basically to stop people grinding them)

In other news got my first legendary item last night.. A wicked trenchcoat for my Warlock. Looks badass!

And im not slagging it, apart from losing my progress on a disconnect, Iv had a thoroughly good time with it.

Bugger

I was actually pleasantly surprised the other night, only had one disconnect so far and it happened mid mission in Old Russia, however much to my surprise when our fireteam restarted the mission it picked up at the checkpoint exactly where we left off! Was suitably impressed.

Have to say given the hammering it must be getting it's been incredibly stable so far.. Although suspect the weekend will be the true test!

What is the point of the tower? It's massive, with loads of tunnels and offshoot areas with no purpose, and vendors scattered all over the place like it's meant for more than the 16 people it holds. I guess it's meant to convey that it's a living, working city but with it being so sparsely populated, it just makes it seem emptier than if it had been a single corridor with everyone lined up on either side.

There is a lot about the game that feels half-finished, such as the different races you pick. Why are they there? They don't play any differently, sound or animate any differently, you only ever see the back of their head when you're in the tower, so what's the point?

I'd love to read a 'Last Hours of' on this, in the style of the Titanfall one. I suspect that a hell of a lot has changed or been cut during development, as Doctor Shark says a lot feels half-finished and for me there's general feeling that this is probably nowhere near what was originally planned - see all the grand claims of the social side of things (which they're still banging the drum about now in the rationale they have about reviews) compared the incredibly rudimentary and half-assed social options in the actual game.

I was looking around the Tower last night and it seems there are definitely some areas that aren't open to explore yet. In the main area where you arrive, go right to the back between the Bounty giver and the Gunsmith and you can look through into a big area that's currently blocked off.

Hopefully the game continues to open up and expand as everyone is speculating. I'm really enjoying what I've played so far, but I hope I haven't seen everything the game has to offer by the weekend.

Has anyone done any public events yet? I only had one on the way to 20 (on Venus) and none so far on a new char, I'm sure they were kicking off much more often in the beta

Yeah they were, I've had one.

There must be a way to take out bosses more quickly. Shooting a robotic spider in the legs about a mililon fucking times isn't fun.

Will bosses level up as we do, meaning its always going to be like this?

It was only half an hour maybe 40 mins, but yeah not thrilled. The game let people join in with me, but then kicked me out over a disconnect. Doesnt seem a fair system really. You do get XP from killing things I take it, its not just a bonus at the end?
