Destiny: FIN

Nailed my thoughts exactly. I especially like the first line as it pretty much encompasses everything I like about Bungies design philosophy and everything I hate about the modern FPS:

We’re conditioned, these days, to expect certain things from First Person Shooters.

We expect bombastic set-pieces. We expect to see buildings fall, bridges collapse and helicopters spin to a fiery doom. We expect control to be wrenched away from us at key moments, to let some kind of drama play out.

Bungie don’t make games like that.

Bungie have, for some reason, made joining someone else's game friends only by default so you can't actually join most of those players running around the hub unless they've changed the setting but most people seem to be unaware of this and Bungie have done a really bad job explaining how this works in the game.

They haven't made a bad job of explaining it, they haven't done any job whatsoever. I read somewhere before - not ingame, obviously - that R3 lets you join with others, it's been said on here too. I tried that in the hub, then on the ground and saw no such joining option, just wave or dance. No explanation that I even should be trying that to join, no explanation that I should or could be seeing join options, no explanation that it's set to friends only*. For what's evidently supposed to be a social game that's utterly rubbish, although I'm sure it's less noticeable if you've got a friends list in the hundreds and you're all playing the game at the same time.

* I've not tried it yet since finding the option myself and switching it to public, but then that'll just affect me won't it? So I still won't be able to try join up with anyone else unless they've found and changed the option as well, I presume? But people can now R3 and join me at least, yeah?

Where's the problem joining teams? Point cursor at player->press R3->Hit Options->Invite to Fireteam.

I don't think I even saw an "options" option, just that I could press R on the dpad to interact or something? And I wasn't even drinking! Maybe it's the relatively low-res of the PS3 that makes it hard to see. I'll have to have another look.

The Public/ Friends Only/ Invite Only setting only decides whether people can jump into your Fireteam without you inviting them (Public), without inviting them if they're a friend (Friends Only), or they need to be invited (Invite Only). You can invite people without either party changing settings from the default.

You press R3/ click the right stick on Xbox. Then it'll highlight the player and say "PRESS [start/ Options] TO INTERACT" and you get the various interaction options.

That seems quite the thing. Why can't it just be point cursor at player-> press Y/Triangle to join Fireteam?

Because if you're mid battle and you cursor over an ally, you end up inviting some randomer to your fireteam when all you wanted to do was switch to your Heavy Gun.

I had a couple of gos at inviting randoms to my fireteam last night with no joy; I don't want to sound bitter, but I danced at them and everything, and still they refused to hook up with me. Reminds me of going to nightclubs as a teenager.

Is the only way to fireteam up with randoms through the OS game invite system? It feels a bit unwieldy, if so.

Primary ammo is so plentiful that it seems essentially infinite for me so far. It's the secondary and tertiary ammo that need to be used carefully. With that in mind having it regenerate doesn't seem like a problem. The game is not designed around you running out of primary ammo.

I've found myself low on ammo a number of times, although admittedly it was mostly when I played the 'very hard' mission which was a couple of levels ahead of me.

Raises the question why primary weapons don’t have infinite ammo.

Yeah, the social aspect hasn't appeared for me yet either. I saw some blue names off in the distance and sprinted over to try and join up with them (calling "hello, I say, you chaps" as I went) only to be blocked by a bunch of spawning enemies in a door way and by the time I'd dispatched them my soon to be new friends had vanished. Destiny is a lonely place.

Set your fireteam to public meaning randoms can join you without you needing to invite them. I've had a few join me that way.

It gives the combat a bit more ebb and flow, I guess - your ammo may regenerate after 30 seconds, but that's still 30 seconds of scrambling around trying to stay in cover.

All you guys are lame. Just enjoy games for what they are "omg this is x game with y thrown in".

Who gives a fuck? IT'S FUN.

This.

Can you repost this in every thread — this is what it is all about.

Really weird question here BUT Does anyone know how much data destiny downloads in an hours play? Not including updates and that.

About 90mb per hour — I've had it tethered to a phone for the last day.

I liked what I played last night, very slick.

I like the fact it's more Mass Effect than Halo, it's less meathead and moronic military speak.

Within 2 minutes of being in the space hub, I was hit by 3 requests to play. Then realised I was playing as a female character, which I tend to do to avoid the aforementioned bonehead shit dialogue. I wonder, do female players think female characters are bimbos or tomboys?

The only thing I don't like is the music, it's generally shit. It would be great to have the ability to turn right down, or even off. But this function didn't exist in the Beta either, so it's not like I didn't expect it.

Played as a female in the alpha, beta and full game. This has never happened to me.

Also the music is awesome you loon

Depends who you ask. To me it's Halo/Diablo 3/Borderlands/WOW mashed together in a way that I don't fully understand yet.

What's the most fun class to play as?

I've played all three between the alpha, beta and retail. The warlock is the most fun, closely followed by the hunter. I didn't find the Titan abilities much fun tbh.

Bear in mind every class has a subclass.

It's got a way to go to catch GTAV mind...

Developed by Rockstar North and published by Rockstar Games, the critically acclaimed open world action-adventure video game sold 11.21 million units in its first 24 hours, and generated revenue of $815.7 million (£511.8 million), going on to reach $1 billion (£624.45 million) in sales after just three days on September 20 2013.

It's an amazing achievement though considering it's a new IP, GTA5 had some form coming in which this doesn't (apart from being by the team behind Halo).

And to think the other day in the Xbone thread Angel and Boozy didn't think it would do very well......
