I'm not sure how.

Can someone who has played this more than me tell me what it has over Borderlands 2?

Mob AI is better, more 'realistic' graphics and serious tone, proper PvP, larger groups for raids (Borderlands is capped at 4 players)

For me, Borderlands(2) is the better game (especially in co-op) because of the story, characters, abilities and themes, but the two are quite different I wouldn't really put them head to head.

I prefer the PvP in Garden Warfare but I wouldn't compare that either!

The combat can be strategic like Halo and not a shooting gallery like Borderlands, the two are apples and oranges I know and both can be fun but the Borderlands comparisons are only because of the open world and loot, it plays very differently.

@cheetos

Also:

Vast numbers of weapons (most of which you'll use for a short period or not at all)

Levelling system which alienates players a bit above or below what enemies are

Similar bullet sponge bosses (but less fun so far)

Similar vehicles

Come on, it's got loads in common. Borderlands 2 is edging it so far for me by having more variety in ememies and weapon types. I hope that changes over time and this is more focussed as I didn't actually like B2 that much, it was too drawn out.

Is level 20 the max? If so I see that as a good thing, get everyone on a level playing field and I can see the game being way better. Hopefully it won't take long to get there. Levelling and shooters are a stupid mix.

Strategic combat like Halo? No way, not a chance. It's nothing like that. The enemies in Destiny are dumb bullet sponges.

Up to Venus. The most enjoyable thing so far is my handcannon which is just a headshot machine at the moment. I was just overlevelled for the moon and it was a breeze.

For the third time playing the multiplayer control game, I started to like it, but I still really doubt the balance in this re weapons/level.

Very differently? How? What makes it so different?

Admittedly having only played a couple of hours I'd say it feels almost identical in how it plays and even looks to an extent, with the only noticeable differences being the hub area (that reminds me of a cross between Mass Effect and PSO, which is nice) and that I can see other people wandering about without having to explicitly join their game or let them join mine.

Not really a surprise but Jeff Gerstmann doesn't seem to like it. I haven't listened to the whole Bombcast yet but he does make some relevant points to be fair to him.

I'm sure everyone will, even the guys that think it's brilliant will find things they dislike or feel could have been improved.

This idea that there's a backlash and the game is a 'mess' is just ridiculous though.

Usually when controlling a vehicle it's R trigger to accelerate and L to brake.

Have you never played Halo? That might be what it is, I just couldn't imagine it behaving any other way. You can actually use R to accelerate though (it's the boost button). Don't really need to brake as it slows so quickly, and anyway the L is used as a trigger once you get one that can shoot.

Everyone is on a level playing field, all damage and defense is equalised and all guns drop down to their base stats. A higher levelled player will have more options available to him. I.e. he can choose between two grenade types, but the grenade he chooses does the same damage as everyone else's grenades regardless of the level displayed above their heads.

20 is the max you can achieve with XP but you get items that push you over 20. 29 is the highest seen so far.

I imagine the expansions will up the level cap and add a new planet.

Some stuff on endgame here

How does one acces the Vanguard and Digital Guardian goodies? I have both (or I should have), but I only seem to have the Beta emblem and what looks like the default colours for the vehicles.

Go pick them up from the Tower Postmaster. Or you can buy them for like a buck off the Special Requisitions lady. I've got a Vault full of spare spaceships and Ghost skins.

I'm getting a solid groove on since I started last night. Not quite at my epic beta loadout- I suspect they've heavily tweaked the drop rates in the final game- but I do have a high-end pulse rifle that refills my grenade meter every time I kill something with it.

Just need a Rustworn Cloak now...

Anyway for what it's worth here are my impressions.

Basically I love it, it's a long long time since I had to force myself to stop playing because it's 1am and I need desperately to go to sleep. I've put in about 4.5 hours now and am at level 9, with about 2 of those hours being in a fireteam with a mate, and all that time has been story and patrol missions, haven't touched the crucible or strikes/raids yet.

Playing with a mate(s) is obviously the best way to play just because well... friends, however it's also a joy to play solo because I find the underlying mechanics so much fun. The sense of exploration is amazing as well, and the patrol missions really give you a sense of how each area is actually pretty massive. I played a resonable amount of the beta and I know that there are areas on Earth that I haven't revisited yet, even though I've already gone off to the moon.

I don't personally get the gripe about load times, okay so you can occassionally wait 30seconds to a minute when you 'launch' however that only tends to be when you are in a fireteam and I would imagine that has everything to do with syncing you up and placing you on an open server and nothing to do with the game loading in (so that SSD HDD won't help). Also it's a tiny price to pay considering that the areas you are dropped into are massive and an actual play session could potentially be hours.

The whole armour/weapons at low levels can seem a bit throw away but I think the whole idea is to get you to try out different things, understand that the number at the top doesn't mean everything (you need to look at impact, damage type etc.....), which ones are upgradable, how bonuses can affect you cooldowns etc. The meat of the game simply has to be the end game once you get to level 20, because you just level up far too fast for it not to be. At that point I wouldn imagine that the knowledge you have picked up through chopping and changing weapons at lower levels will enable you to make better decisions on your legendary equipment.
