Destiny: FIN

Tonight's session comes to an end. Highlight so far is fending off a horde of enemies with magicaldrop at my side. It was tough but my it was fun.We had a fire team of 3 but picked up a fourth guy who stayed with us for quite a bit, before dissolving.

Thoroughly enjoyable...I'd only planned a solo outing but it was far more enjoyable as a fire team. Lack of voice comms wasn't a real issue (my fault), covering and reviving added to the tension. Will dig out my headset for the next session.

Had a huge amount of fun dropping in and out of different games tonight which finished with me and magicaldrop fighting off a huge horde of Fallen on the moon.

Safe to say I'm absolutely loving this!

Yep, another great battle although having you a couple of levels higher than me meant I was only the supporting act! Definitely a much better game when teamed up.

I really, really don't see the point in the always online on this game. I've played up to the moon solo and enjoyed every minute of it. I fail to see how being disconnected to the internet would have a problem with it, thus far. The music and atmosphere are right up there with the very best, I don't want people nattering in my earhole the whole time.

I like Destiny, but I tend to agree. I think Activision and Bungie have massively overegged what online functionality is here. Most of the time all the always online means is that occasionally on route to another objective you'll see another player shooting mans, you can shoot them with him until they're all dead I guess. You can't really interact with other players beyond a paltry four gesture commands. You can't even join up with randoms for campaign missions easily, matchmaking is there for Strikes but bafflingly absent for the majority of content. Even the Tower, this supposed grand social hub that they big up in every interview, is limited to 16 players and there's not actually anything to do there but visit a couple of shops again and again. It's a good game, but their pre-release rhetoric about the online aspects specifically doesn't really hold up.

So how do I join up with anyone? Join a fireteam? Anything? This game explains fuck all. I'm doing the Story 3 bit and there was some other player wandering about at L4 (I'm L3) and could I join him, ask him to join me or what? I ended up going it alone, then it got to an obviously foreboding bit where I was instantly overwhelmed and died. This seems to be the only way for me to gain exp unless I wander round picking off cannon fodder though (well, unless I do Story 4 but it seems to make sense to do 3 first?).

When you're looking at someone you can click the right stick and bring up some options. The only way to team up with a random in the campaign from what I can see is to send them an invite via XBL/PSN.

It just let me wave or dance at them. This seemed inappropriate, given we were being shot at by things.

When you're in orbit press triangle to bring up your friends list. Anyone who is online playing Destiny will be on it and you can select anyone and see what they're doing - If they're joinable you'll have the option to join that fireteam.

Hmm, well only grae-me was online and looking into it it had "Mass Effect" under his name, so I guess he was playing that? I think this is why I tend to not play online, I just don't get it :(

You can invite any randoms that are around into your fire team via start/menu (the character screen)then click left shoulder(roster I think?). This brings up a list of players. If it's the same as the beta fireteams are set to private only by default, strangely. Also on the map screens if an area is populated you'll see player icons next to each level.

Yeah, I just found that the fireteams were set to friends only rather than public and it's not obvious, so presumably hardly anyone knows to change it. I can't believe it's not set to public by default, especially on the older platforms  I know I'm only near the start, so does it actually tell you about any of this? Bit mental if it doesn't.

I'm finding all the online aspects quite confusing as well, I don't normally play stuff like this.

I'm only on the second story mission but I don't really understand whether I'm able to play co-op or not yet. Loads of people on my Friend's List are playing but should I be joining them so early on or not? Won't I end up playing it all out of order if I dip in and out of friend's games?

I think this is why I avoid games like this usually, I get this nagging feeling that I'm playing it all wrong or out of the intended order (does the order even matter?) and missing stuff. I don't even understand what a Fireteam is meant to be or if it would be stupid to join a friend 4 levels higher than me or something.

I have liked it well enough on my own, more than I expected I would, but I can already see it possibly being the type of game that gets a bit repetitive for my tastes.

A fire team is simply a team of 3 which goes through the game session together I.e. They jointly undertake story or patrol missions or just dick around together. It's perfectly feasible to play solo until until you are either obliged to join with others because of the mission type or you hit a difficulty spike. I don't think there is a right or wrong way to play really.

Once you've played a mission or two to get your hand in, I reckon it's safe to play any of the low level story missions in any order, as the story in any level is mostly "we need to get a sword off a wizard and oops... Hope you're ready to kill a load of guys". Try and find some people roughly your own level, a few either side is OK.

Apologies to Alkasteve. I kind of forgot there was somebody playing with me while I wandered off to see what I could shoot.

Ordered the Sony 2.0 headphones for this. Can't come soon enough. Absolutely loving it.

No worries :) I was mostly joining people and having some fun anyway, certainly a lot more enjoyable with others I find

Destiny. It's a videogame about shooting things.

If you want to shoot things with other Mukkers please add your details to this spreadsheet:

RLLMUK Destiny Players (all platforms)

RLLMUK Bungie clan

Launch info:

Servers go live at Midday on Monday (source)

Silly question.... How do I add my name to this? Also, please feel free to add me (iknowgungfu) as I am sure to be a lonely soul in this game!

Destiny: it's ok ish

It's an odd beast. Mixing genres like this is an experiment and at the moment I think Destiny has had to make a compromise, rather than a progression.

Someone mentioned the lack of tactics needed, I agree. There is a lot of grinding, something Halo rarely made part of its approach, and I don't see how that will change as you level up. I sort of wish Bungie had teamed up with Bethesda or Bioware to develop this game.

It's early days and I'm giving it time, but I'm a bit confused. Not sure about this new 'shared-world shooter' genre.

Anyway thanks to tnman and And for the games earlier; this is most definitely not at its best played alone.
