What's the best way to grind encrypted engrams in a new account? The missus is trying to get an achievement of getting 25 encrypted engrams, but she's only level 4. You don't get the spark of light anymore on new accounts to boost to 25 and unlocking new areas. It's taking ages to get them.

I'm not sure there is a quick way apart from playing the game and picking up encrypted engrams when they start dropping. But if she's after achievements in general, that'll be one of the quicker ones to come in any case.

Also on Xûr, those Eaos are 54/77 Int / 55/78 Dis - a 97% DIM rating and just about T12. I just put my old 91% 387 Eaos into them.

Figured that would be the case. I haven't played in about 3 months. I'm sure engrams drop slower than they used too. It's just that specific achievement she needs. Some TrueAchievements competition.

Court Of Oryx drops them like crazy, same for Archons Forge.

CoO is easier though.

Ah, Level 4 eh, can she join someone else who's already in CoO & just hang about at the back, cowering?

Fuck no. They drop more frequently than sterling these days.

I'm seeing them drop at a rate of about 3 or 4 per hour when I took over the other day and bumped her up to level 10.

That's just the way it works. They don't drop any less often than they used to though. Try doing a mission that has high mob density, like The Dark Beyond (I think that's available sub-level 7). Replay it on Heroic and just die at the part where you wake the Hive, after collecting anything that drops (don't kill the yellow Knight), and farm that bit. Apart from ensuring maximum add killing, there isn't a cheat to doing it. There's no loot cave any more.

I see the 3oc vendor is selling exotic arms so I bought a few and then realised that really I should have held onto them, good job the game is trolling me with my 2x exotic drops today being..... yep, arms :hmm:

so arms engrams confirmed as latest light and not legacy?

You can't do it on heroic anymore. It's normal or light level 240+

I just ran it 4 times on normal. 2 engrams popped.

How? To be fair, you (or your gf) are just trying to game the system quickly for some achievement site or other, and you can't really judge it against that. Bungie have definitely increased the rate of engram drops, and although that's really applicable to high-light characters (many of whom complain about the sheer volume of green and blue engrams dropping), they haven't made low-level drops less frequent as far as I can see. I played up to level 7 on the Xbox trial recently (don't ask) and it definitely wasn't stingier than it used to be.

But at the same time, the game does expect you to actually play it to get the gear, and as I said there's no real shortcut to that other than farming the highest density of mobs as quickly as possible. Just run the bit I suggested over and over again, because there's barely any not-killing-lots-of-mobs-downtime in it. Or any other similar section where you can just die and restart to face a pack of mobs immediately.

Weekly update is up:

On October 18th, corresponding with the release of Heroic Mode for Wrath of the Machine, your Maximum Light will be increased to 400. With this increase, many reward sources will also increase their maximum Light. Strike Hoards, Nightfall, Exotic Engrams, Trials of Osiris, Crucible, and Iron Banner will now provide rewards up to 400 Light. Archon’s Forge, the Heroic SIVA Strike playlist, and Legendary Engrams will now provide rewards up to 385 Light. Rare Engrams and the SIVA Strike Playlist will now provide rewards up to 365 Light. The recommended Light for these activities will remain the same with the exception of Nightfall, which will be increased to a recommended light of 380. For those striving to reach Heroic Wrath of the Machine or even attempt their first run at Normal Wrath of the Machine, players should find more paths and options available to them to reach the recommended Light.

For players forging their path through Wrath of the Machine, Trials of Osiris, and Iron Banner, these activities will now attempt to reward higher Light on average, compared to your current Light.

Artifacts and Ghosts were dropping from fewer sources than intended and have been added as Archon’s Forge completion rewards. These items will now drop up to 400 Light. In Faction Packages, the rate at which Ghosts are rewarded has been increased. Likewise, the rate of artifacts from Eris’ Faction Packages have been increased.

That’s just a preview of what you’ll find in 2.4.1. Deployment begins at approximately 10AM Pacific on Tuesday, October 18th. To ensure that all World-First-hopeful Fireteams have time to download the update, Heroic Mode for Wrath of the Machine will begin at 2PM Pacific on Tuesday, October 18th.

Ah. So no hard mode raid for us UK plebs if we want an early night then.

Fraid I'll not be playing it at all that night - it's far too late a start for me in a very busy work week. We'll only have the Thurs next week, and only Thurs/Sun nights the week after as a full team. So I'm afraid we'll not have a proper HM run for a while unless you start subbing people.

If they're only lvl10, they're getting mainly Green engrams though? Encrypted (Blue) ones probably don't start dropping often until later than that. Just have to play the game.

Greens can fall as coded engrams when you're at a lower level than that - they become unencoded in the field a bit later (level 15 I think). Or that's how it used to work.
