"Old" engrams give you "new" gear, I just got 2 Tarantellas on my Hunter:

Well that's a first - well done for keeping the faith!

I think they've introduced a few, er... unintended consequences with the latest update. For instance, you can complete certain bounties/quests usually only applicable to Crucible in SRL, including getting 3% per race on your Crucible reputation towards the Chaperone quest if you've TLW equipped (at least, that's the percentage I got in the two races I did with it equipped). Bound to be patched, I expect.

The Gollenge seemed straightforward enough, but we only did it once tonight. Main reason is, the racing was just more fun than the raiding, although a lot of that is about its novelty, I'm sure. It'd be nice to see it come back on a regular basis with more tracks, though. I really like that they've put it in the game, and with a bit of beefing up and a few (lot) more tracks it could be a great long-term addition. It does feel like an admittedly weird, but oddly satisfying bit of lateral world-building - adds nicely to the diversity of the title.

Yeah, I'm surprised by how much fun it was. I bought the logbook off Eververse btw (yeah I know, but I had the money lying about in Paypal, so thought why not), and some of the stuff to complete in it are quite tough. Its something to do in the game outside raiding or Trials/Iron Banner, at least for the next few weeks anyway.

yep double grenades are Go! with my shiny new Armamentarium off a vaulted exotic. Also then got a ATS Taranteklla and Alchemist Rainment which is weird as decoding into other classes barely ever happens to me.

Sparrow racing is a cool little extra. Think I could do with a better bike and the thing could do with some Road Rash style punching and power-ups.

I was up till 3:30 am this morning trying to do the Golgoroth challenge. We had it down but couldn't get enough damage done in time. One guy was underpowered and it made a difference.

We were passing the gaze to every member of the fireteam for every damage round. Is this needed or overkill.

Nope, that's what you need to do, as far as I can tell. Usual thing to maximise damage: WoL bubble, a tether (or two, if you can string them together), highest-impact sniper (preferably Spindle), get into the puddle early and get out late. And minimise the time in between damage rounds by swapping gaze between pullers 2 and 6 as soon as possible: we just had a team of three on each side and pulled it from one to the other as soon as his back opened again.

We got it done last night, then almost had it on our alts but lost the gaze just before the last round.

Took longer than we expected to get the timings down, and make sure everyone was comfortable getting the gaze, plus we only jumped down for the first puddle so treated it exactly like single orb mode in that respect.

So you know have a chance to proc 3oC on Crucible and SRL races? Is that just for finishing?!

Do we think there's a cooldown, or a lower chance to drop on multiplayer activity than for killing Ultras? Or are we going to have it potentially rain exotics for a little while, before an inevitable patch (again)?

It's the chance of an exotic drop on completion, like there is now (intentionally) in Crucible matches. So cooldown shouldn't apply. The 'bug' is that an SRL race is being treated like a Crucible match, which means not only that completing a race gets a chance of an exotic drop, but activities in a race can go towards Crucible bounties. So you get 3% in Crucible rep towards the Jolly Holliday quest for a race completion (and presumably if you get blown up you can lose some rep) and if you run over enemies these are 'kills' in Crucible, too. I'm sure they'll look to patch the whole 'SRL = Crucible' thing out soon - having said that, they didn't put it in their 'known issues' notes even though they obviously know about it.

So can you equip The Last Word, run over some enemies, finish the race and have > 3% toward the quest?

I've never bothered with that as I don't like The Last Word, but I may keep it on me if I try out the sparrow racing.

Yup, seems so. I only did two races with it equipped and got 3% each time, but I neither died nor killed any mobs on those runs. Others have reported that they got 1% for a kill - and since some Crucible bounties do let track-mob kills register as actual kills, that kind of makes sense. And I guess if your sparrow gets blown up, losing (1% of?) rep would make sense, too. I've not tested that myself though.

That interview on Eurogamer with the guy from Bungie is a bit concerning. Seems like there'll be no more expansions until Destiny 2 (or whatever they're gonna call it) late on next year. Instead there'll be a series of 'events' like Festival of the Lost & the sparrow racing etc. We'll see what they come up with I guess but I'm struggling to see how they're going to hold players' attention with no substantial new content.

As excellent as the game is when it shines, I can't help but feel that they've bitten off more than they can chew with the whole concept of Destiny. Producing first-in-class FPS content like the raids & strikes takes a hell of a lot of time & manpower & I just don't know if they can maintain enough output of fresh content to hold people's interest between the big tentpole releases.

The sparrow racing was fun for an evening & there's some great potential there but I can't be arsed with the Golgoroth challenge because in reality the only tangible reward I can obtain from it is raising my light level by maybe one or two. For what though?! To play the same raid at a slightly higher level? It's just chasing a meaningless number at the moment because once you've passed 310 light it doesn't really make any discernible difference that I can tell.

The Taken King was brilliant & refreshed the game in many ways but the well is pretty dry right now & if we really are going to have wait nearly a year for any major new content then the player numbers will drop off a cliff, if they haven't already. Nothing wrong with that because there's plenty to play elsewhere but a good number of those people won't come back & then Bungie will have themselves a problem.

You won't do ( or will struggle ) Oryx on Hard at 310 & if you do PVP then for both IB & Trials, raising your light level gives you a distinct advantage.

But yes, for regular PVE / PVP, your light level doesn't really make much difference.

I think the big numbers will come back for Destiny 2 just like the big numbers came back from Halo to Halo 2 a few years later. In the meantime, I'd say sparrow racing and the ongoing raid challenges are 'substantial new content' - substantial enough to keep my interest for the next month anyway. I think there's been lots of that in the three months since TTK's release. I can't see them keeping that up through next year, though, and even more people will drift off into other games, or something else entirely. So I agree with you there, just not that they've hit that barren new content wasteland yet.

But it's ok. Destiny isn't an MMO. The raids aren't of the same depth or length as WoW's were (certainly at the start). It isn't a monthly subscription service - you'll buy the content you want when it comes out, play it to death for a few months, and have a break. I don't think Bungie/Activision have have really settled on a pricing philosophy yet, and some of the stuff they're doing suggests they're looking at alternative revenue streams to the once-a-year big cash splash, and recurring events like Iron Banner and the racing league are clearly going to be built upon to provide a calendar of activities that serve as a little nudge to lapsed Destiny players every now and then and keep them coming back in for little nibbles between big releases. With IB, Trials, and now SRL in that calendar, they're obviously expanding the 'events' part of the Destiny package, and with time-limited quests that they drop in every now and then, the game feels a lot more 'live' than it did in year One, and a lot busier. I'm sure they will want to build on that, but they're still experimenting with content.

I think they'll be fine as long as they can make big releases of the quality of TTK every year (caveats about reward structure aside), and keep adding smaller new content through the year like SRL, new occasional quests like the ones we've seen so far, and keep refreshing and improving - as they have - the way Trials and IB work and the way they reward players. I think comparing the % of TTK buyers who play right the year through to, say, WoW players is mistaken (not that you did that, but some do draw the comparison). It wouldn't exactly be fair either to compare the drop off of Destiny players to the drop off of Halo 5 players through the year, but on a non-monthly-sub service it's probably a closer comparison to make than something like WoW. Destiny's a sort of half-way house between the two in terms of the sort of 'service' it provides, and isn't far off in terms of the current pricing model.

Yeah, I think that's a fair summary of where the game is right now. I'm cool with that because I've got an outrageous amount of value out of the game this past year & it means I can spend my gaming time playing other things between the big content drops but I'm not sure that that's what Bungie & Activision intended. It seems like ideally they'd want to hold player's interest & for people to play the game continuously & a drip-feed of the odd event & quest here & there for the better part of a year just isn't going to be enough for most people. It's an ambitious plan they have & they're evidently still feeling their way with it, so it'll be interesting to see how they do things going forward.

Well, Gran Sparrismo is pretty good fun. The helmets even have good PvP / PvE perks too.

I'm sure they'll look to patch the whole 'SRL = Crucible' thing out soon

Not sure why they'd do that. It is competitive multiplayer, after all. If they did, I imagine people probably wouldn't bother with it. It's another means of levelling Crucible / Faction rep for those who can't be arsed with PvP outside of IB / Trials (i.e. me).

You won't do ( or will struggle ) Oryx on Hard at 310 & if you do PVP then for both IB & Trials, raising your light level gives you a distinct advantage.

You're only at a distinct (5%) advantage if you're above 25 light levels in PvP.
