any Wes Anderson film has an excellent soundtrack. Rushmore and The Royal Tenenbaums especially. But also a special mention to the Life Aquatic, because those Seu Jorge versions of the Bowie songs were surprisingly good.

Hedwig and the Angry Inch has a great soundtrack, but that might be cheating as it's technically a musical.

24 Hour Party People has a good soundtrack, but that might be cheating as it's a film about the music on the soundtrack.

Christie Malry's Own Double Entry has an AWESOME sountrack. It's not cheating this time, it's a proper soundtrack, but I *am* biased because Luke Haines can do no wrong in my book and the soundtrack is basically a Luke Haines album.

I agree about Joe Hisaishi, and Kikujiro is especially good.

Haines is the man. Perhaps the only rarities/B sides comps i enjoyed was Luke Haines Is Dead.

Can't wait for the new album.

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan FTW.

KKKKHHHHAAAAAAAANNNNNNN

Sorry, couldn't resist :)

As usual, I'll throw a curve ball:

Great use of classical music (see: Asuka vs the Eva's) and great in-house stuff and even some jazz :) The music used during the climax and final scene are especially great. This is my fave non Final Fantasy ost easily :(

This thread is another sign I need to watch this again :)

Also worth tracking down is Jeff Mills' amazing soundtrack to the Fritz Lang's classic 'Metropolis'

metropolis-dvd_02a.jpg

i've got a soft spot for the giorgio moroder version of this, along with his lovely colorised version of the movie, just wish they'd put the thing out on DVD.

other great soundtracks, i'd agree with the mention of angelo baddalamenti - my personal favourite is blue velvet.

neil youngs album for "where the buffalo roam" was superb, wish i still had it.

aliens is very stirring (although parts of it tend to crop up all over the place - notably the end of die hard)

gremlins, wargames, blue thunder all hung together well as albums.

Ghostbusters has a very strong score but is a little too reliant on repeated themes to be a comfortable listen as a CD - the songs from album, in hindsight, was probably the correct album to release but if you do get a chance to pick up the orchestral CD (its rare) for a decent price its worth a try.

Danny elfman stuff is normally pretty good value, i've got a particular fondess for a song he and his band (the mystic knights of the oingo boingo) provided for a movie called forbidden zone.

probably the soundtracks that have had the most effect on me were 'Repo man' and 'Return of the living dead' im not exagerating when i say they are life changing stuff.

 the first times i heard the damned, the cramps. roky erickson, iggy pop, black flag etc, 20 odd years later and my music taste is still the legacy of those LPs.

"Colorised" versions of classics like Metropolis make the Baby Jesus cry, Djezz.

uh-huh, yeah its not colorised in the typical sense. its not simulated colour merely the original film with the ocasional subtle colour filter. It also was the first time that a lot of scenes (that we all now take for granted) were returned to the movie.

It was, most notable, for being possibly the last time that a movie of this era was presented for enjoyment of a mainstream audience rather than for the edification of over earnest cinephiles.

Oh yeah, i'd just like to point out that i'm not accusing you of being some kind of real ale swilling, bearded joyophobe but having read the liner notes on a few "worthwhile" DVDs, i know that those bad boys are out there and obviously constitute a sizeabl ammount of the market for these things.

I finally managed to get hold of Morricone's 'Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion' - and it's every bit as marvellous as I'd been led to believe it was.

Staying on the Morricone tip the Ipecac compilation of his freaky early '70s stuff, 'Crime and Dissonance' is highly recommended. Wonderfully produced package as well.

Ah, The Beach is another good compilation.

Yep, The Beach has some excellent tracks.

I'm also fond of:

Kundun - Philip Glass. His usual subtle, atmospheric layering of sound. Lovely flute and harp work mingled with Tibetan chanting.

Gladiator - great percussion and mixture of instruments.

Solaris (remake) - Poignant and Atmospheric. Perfect accompaniment to the movie.

I bought that a few years ago but haven't really got into it.

I really love his score for 'Koyaanisqatsi', though, In fact, I 'll put it on right now. The first track, with the monk-like chanting, is amazing.

I also like his tracks on 'The Truman Show' - another great soundtrack - which are taken from a couple of other films whose names escape me at the moment.

Kill Bill

Labyrinth

Dirty Dancing (damn it not being the 'ultimate' cd)

Amelie

Shaun of the Dead

Spaced (took me ages to find and buy)

Romeo + Juliet

Anime opening and some closing themes eg Chobits, Genshiken, various Full metal Panic series.

End of Evangelion- The cello solo shinji plays and of cousre my favorite recording of Pacardbels Kanon (actually at the end of the first half of Death and Rebirth)

Soundtracks/movie tunes I want and love

Hedwig and the angry inch - That movie is ace, mainly because of the music

Karate kid 1-2

More anime tunes (only mp3s ive got are mainly dance remixes of the one I want) Especially the opening theme to Gankutsuou which is wonderful

Moulin Rouge
