Couldnt find a recent thread on this so heres a few of my faves that are on my MP3 player at the moment...

V for Vendetta - Good variety of music, even the vocal tracks are excellent. 'Valerie' and 'Evey Reborn' are the stand out tracks for me

Hellraiser / Hellraiser 2 Hellbound - Great Horror film music. I think the Hellbound soundtrack just beats Hellraiser. Well worth hunting down

The Empire Strikes Back - Some of John Williams best work IMO. Love disc 2.

Twin Peaks / Run Lola Run / Fellowship of the Ring Soundtracks also get plenty of play time at the moment

Anyone care to recommend some more?

A quick look through the CDs in my desk draw reveals:

Mulholland Dr/Fire Walk With Me - beautifully dark and haunting. Angelo Badalamenti's collaboration with David Lynch is one of the most perfectly matched in modern cinema.

The Thin Red Line (Hans Zimmer) - epic and moving

2001 (various) - ground-breaking soundtrack using classical music and the excellent Georgi Lygeti

Brazil - Michael Kamen's finest (half) hour

The Virgin Suicides - dreamy Air-ness

Blade Runner - 'nuff said

Akira - awesome Japanese percussion, chanting and weirdness

Oh Brother Where Art Thou - It makes me laugh

Straight Story - Best Badalamenti of the lot

Out of Sight - some good stuff on there

South Park - Karl's Mom's a Stupid Bitch always brings a smile to my face

Team America World Police - Fuck Yeah!

Blues Brothers - Obviously

Big fan of the Angelo Badalamenti stuff for David Lynch as well, Twin Peaks in particular. Morricone and Hermann are the real masters though, the latter's Vertigo OST is maybe my favourite. The Barry Lyndon soundtrack's up there, I really like the Oldboy one too.

any Wes Anderson film has an excellent soundtrack. Rushmore and The Royal Tenenbaums especially. But also a special mention to the Life Aquatic, because those Seu Jorge versions of the Bowie songs were surprisingly good.

Hedwig and the Angry Inch has a great soundtrack, but that might be cheating as it's technically a musical.

24 Hour Party People has a good soundtrack, but that might be cheating as it's a film about the music on the soundtrack.

Christie Malry's Own Double Entry has an AWESOME sountrack. It's not cheating this time, it's a proper soundtrack, but I *am* biased because Luke Haines can do no wrong in my book and the soundtrack is basically a Luke Haines album.

I agree about Joe Hisaishi, and Kikujiro is especially good.

Another vote for Herrman and especially for this. If you haven't yet heard it, I can practically guarantee you'll love it, it's amazing.

I much prefer scores to soundtracks in general but sometimes, such as the case of my final selection listed, collections of songs really work.

-The Wicker Man: Paul Giovanni

-Once Upon a Time in the West: Morricone

-Invitation To a Suicide: John Zorn

-Space is The Place: Sun Ra

-Susperia: Goblin

-Psychomania: Frog

-Boyz N Tha Hood: Stanley Clarke

-Alfie: Sonny Rollins

-Lift To the Scaffold: Miles Davis

-Easy Rider: Various

Yann Tiersen is the king of soundtracks at the moment. Well, both Amelie and Goodbye, Lenin are beautiful, especially the latter.

As mentioned, Wes Anderson films. My favourite is Tenenbaums, because: Nick Drake, Velvet Underground, Eliott Smith... mm. Aquatic is good, too. Love the Sven Libaek stuff.

Spirited Away has a couple of gorgeous tracks on it.

The films not too bad, more of a coming of age film, not quite in the same league as Gondry or Jones. The soundtrack was originally going to be largely done by Elliott Smith, but Tim De Laughter from Polyphonic Spree took over after Elliott unfortunately died. The soundtracks mainly worth it for a noodling 23 minute song from Tim.
