My PC's pretty ancient. I've got to that point where any substantial upgrade is basically going to require a complete replacement of mobo, cpu, ram, gpu, psu and case, so I'm holding off until I see what Vista needs.

cpu: 2.4ghz P4

ram: 1gb of something very slow

gpu: 6600GT

hdd: 250gb + 80gb

mobo: ASUS p4pe

The oldest component on my PC is the keyboard, a 19-year-old IBM Model M.

I've been out of the loop with PC hardware for ages. I understand that the Core Duo is the CPU to go for these days?

Really ? The words "dual core" might be worth checking out again.

I've had a dualcore for 10 months. All my mates have dual core now. I've just installed dual core CPUs in about 40% of the companys computers (the ones using loads of CPU, the rest wouldn't benefit from it).

So yeah, dualcore was a much bigger thing 6 months ago than it is now.

EDIT: Unless you we're meaning Intel Pentium Core Duo? Because they weren't available 6 months ago.

That sounds more like a lack of RAM and a near full harddrive. Make sure you've got at least 5-6 gigs of free HD space if you're running Win XP.

Two things I'd like to mention.

Number one is...

P4 Daul Core 3.4GHz, 500Gb SATA HD,512mb ATI X1900X, DDR2 800 MHZ Ram.

I'm not sure if you're joking or not, but that's nonsense. Set your pagefile to be fixed at 1.5x your physical ram, and as long as you've got a bit of disk space left for temp files when installing or running apps that need it, that's it. No way do you need 5-6 gigs.

Yes, I was referring to the Core Duo. The question is, which one was the OP talking about ?

Yeah he's a spammer. Many people don't seem to realise because everyone has ignored the first post. The spammer URL was put there by a mod.
