Garth Marenghi's Darkplace Is Out Now

Recommended Posts

Friends is the shittest thing ever created. Classic my arse.

OK, "popular classics...", but for the record i think Friends was good for atleast the first 5 series...

My point was probably badly worded, but i was trying to get at the fact that some people just like what is popular/universally acclaimed (and rightly so), but if they dug a bit deeper they would find other things they liked (Mighty Boosh anyone?)...

Ah well, its comedy, so each to their own :D

Darkplace fell flat on its arse when i showed it to 2 friends of mine earlier this year...

...Lets just say we're no longer friends :D

Without sounding harsh, i think people who dont like/get Darkplace have lower "comedic intelligence" that others. For example, the 2 friends who didnt like Darkplace were massive comedy fans, but they deeply loved only the classics such as Friends, Cheers, Frasier, Seinfeld etc...I guess they'd just been dumbed down by that (no matter how good), and couldnt get into anything different or experimental like Darkplace. Ah well, their loss.

Oh God, I totally know what you're talking about. This is really about people opening themselves up to something new and trying to get it. With comedy you have these people who won't laugh at something if it's not comfortably similar to something else they like or just really popular and they feel they ought to like it because everyone else does. It really irritates me because these people don't understand comedy on a universal, subverting of expectation level but only on a social, established "joke" level. What's worse is when people can't understand comedy without a plot attached, that really gets me.

I do like things like Frasier and Friends but they're all the same kinds of jokes and some of the setups are really tired. Even Seinfeld is guilty of some pretty boring situations which are supposed to be a big "joke".

Cool, at least someone does :D

I love stuff like My Name is Earl and The Office USA etc, but it falls into that "universal" comedy category for me. Cant see everyone liking that and then putting Mighty Boosh on to watch Old Greg show everyone his mangina...

What a horribly elitist attitude.

"Somebody doesn't like something I do so they must be stupid and I am cleverer and more open minded than they."

For the record, I was really looking forward to Darkplace but when I watched it I didn't find it funny. So I stopped watching it.

Which isn't what I said. You've got all defensive because you feel I'm attacking people like you who don't find Darkplace funny. That's false, it's fine not to like Darkplace (or indeed anything); I'm making a general point about some people's approach to comedy.

For the record, I have no problem with elitist attitudes so long as they are grounded in something.

:D i Can't read that without hearing Sanch saying it in my head. His delivery of that line is remarkable

Classic example of brilliant delivery. I'd dispute if that line was even written to be funny, yet it's probably the funniest bit of the series for me.
