Howdy, y'all.

I've never been particularly into the RHCP - I bought By The Way, but haven't listened to it for ages. For some reason, I am tempted by Stadium Arcadium, but I've heard many not-so-good things about it. I've heard their early albums are the best - is this true? Recommendations please!

BSSM has aged terribly though.

You're insane. I don't think it has at all.

Whenever I listen to it, I'm still blown away by Rick Rubin's production.

However, earlier stuff like Freaky Styley and The Uplift Mofo Party Plan HAVE aged.

But anyway, definately Blood Sugar Sex Magik.

I love BSSM but the production really has aged. I find it hard to listen to now.

But production aside, as far as I'm concerned you can't go wrong with any of the albums from Mothers Milk onwards. They're all outstanding in their own way. The albums before that are far shallower and lack content, but are still worth checking out. Some hardcore RHCP fans do maintain that the early albums are better, yes, but I think the newer albums keep the funk from before and add actual content on top.

I only got into them a couple of years ago with By The Way. After that I went straight for Blood Sugar Sex Magik, but apart from the obvious singles (Give It Away and Under The Bridge) I wasn't too impressed - I think I was put off by the lyrics to Sir Psycho Sexy and a couple of others. (And yes, I am aware that such lyrics are kind of the entire point of RHCP.) :) I much prefered The Uplift Mofo Party Plan.

I wrote a post about the earlier albums yesterday but our internet is being funny, I did manage to upload a song though.

Uplift Mofo Party Plan is probably the easiest early album to listen to, as it's pretty solid all in all. Not my favourite but decent.

Try this fantasic early song on for size. Most of the other stuff can be a bit faster and punkier though there is SOME slower stuff. Love Trilogy is just ace and a nice centrepoint for me.

Blood Sugar Sex Magik is one of my favourite albums of all time. I remember when it came out (showing my age now). I had Freaky Stylee and loved it but BSSM blew me away. One of THE albums of my school years. I like their new stuff but it doesn't have the edge of their earlier stuff. One Hot Minute is also a great album. Freaky Stylee has aged but is very different from their other stuff Its a really Funky Album rather than rock. I still listen to it quite regularly. I still can't blieve that they are now so huge as they were such a niche, cult band when I got in to them. Good on 'em though.

Anyone read Anthony Keidis' Autobiography? I thought it was a great read. Very honest and at times very amusing.

I really like this series on YouTube where Rick Beato takes apart classic songs and goes into what he feels makes them great - I'm not in any way musical and always impresses me how much goes into something like this RHCP classic (his vids on SOAD are great too) - just isolating and playing little bits of riff or vocal really gets to you when you know a song so well.

:lol: My opinion of BSSM improved after that post! And beyond Fight Like A Brave, I haven't listened to The Uplift Mofo Party Plan in years.

 

 

@Gotters One of the good things about BSSM is that it's an album that was made available in its entirety on Rock Band, so the isolated instrumental parts are readily available. (Though I don't think that's where Rick Beato gets them, as he's played isolated stems from many other tracks that never appeared on Rock Band/Guitar Hero.)

 

 

 

That means that people have been able to make instrumental-only mixes, for those who can't stand Anthony Kiedis!

 

 

 

 

I've been listening to some of John Frusciante's solo albums recently. Before, I was only familiar with The Empyrean (the one that begins with his ten-minute Maggot Brain tribute) and The Will to Death.

 

 

Still haven't worked up the courage to listen to Smile from the Streets You Hold...

I loved the run of albums he released every few months around 2005, Shadows Collide with People in particular is still a big favourite

I'm probably a bit older, so grew up mostly listening to their earlier stuff, and trailed off around the time of BSSM.  I remember being massively disappointed with huge chunks of that album and thinking they'd gone all commercial, but at the same time absolutely loving some of the tracks.  I've not bought an album of their since then.

 

I'd listen to Uplift Mofo and Mother's Milk over BSSM any day of the week.


And I fully agree with Nick Cave about anything they've done since BSSM, except for maybe that one about the aeroplanes and the car park one.

Frusciante is back again? Jesus.

 

Blood Sugar Sex Magik is excellent. I also enjoy One Hot Minute, mainly that's linked to seeing them play that in Wembley Arena when they toured that album.

 

Anything after that is so middle of the road it's in danger of being Coldplay. I've not enjoyed any RHCP stuff for many years but their early stuff is simply brilliant.
