GTA:IV Official Thread

Had a look at my friends list earlier and there was 34 people online out of 58. ALL of them were playing GTA 4. Ive never seen that many on the same game before and I dont think Halo 3 managed much past 20 at any one time. Its been like this all day. R* must be rubbing their hands with glea at the money this is making. The DLC will make them oddles of cash Im sure and I bet it requires little effort.

Would be interesting to see how long it will be before the next GTA game will be out. I reckon it will be within the next 2 years.

That's another thing and something that genuinely annoys me in this game. What I don't like to do whilst playing this game is have to lean forwards and squint every two minutes to read the tiny grey-on-dark-grey text on a tiny mobile screen in the corner (and it's set to large font), or to decipher what the 10 by 10 pixel icon in the GPS is supposed to signify. Is that a clucking bell or a car wash?

I can't play GTA sitting back against my sofa because they designed the game to be played when you're sitting 1cm away from the screen.

Eh? The text is easy to read.

Seconded. Even on a standard def TV you can still read it quite easily upto several metres away. Chase you really should consider a trip to the opticians. Thats not a joke. There might be something wrong.

Ugh. My big rule for team mate NPCs in any game is this: Either make them invincible or make them disposable. Don't make me fail a fucking mission 3/4s of the way through because some badly programmed Irish NPC fuckhead runs off into the middle of a gunfight and gets himself killed.

I don't even want him alive! He's a twat!

FINALLY started playing this today. I've done half a dozen missions so far, spent a fair bit of time driving round and fighting strangers, and I have to admit I'm not all that impressed. So far it's the same old GTA with fresher graphics and the pop up really is awful. I'm sure it gets better though.

It didn't grab me until I was about 20% in. The first couple of hours seemed like a tutorial.

So fear not, stick with it!

The bridges have just opened for me so I'm having a blast running around in the main island. The layout and design of the city is just jaw-dropping. I even treated myself to a suit from Perseus and I feel like a god. I've never been so taken by a lead character in a video game as much as I am with Niko. His story is just amaze and his dialogue is perfect.

So far I'm about 22% in and I'm in no rush whatsoever to complete it. Favourite game of the year so far by a country mile.

I was following a guy slowly and sometimes had to stop at traffic lights a bit behind him. That's when I noticed the shadows of the buildings slowly moving across the ground. I thought that was nice.

It's wonderful.

I was trying to get a quick example shot to show someone who doesn't yet own the game as I find that most of the officially released screens don't show just how good it is. The lighting and the shadowing is just great.

He is thick but he helps you later apprently.

He's been fuck all help covering me so far.

Just failed that mission AGAIN because one of his mates died. I DON'T CARE ABOUT THEM!

I think every free roaming game other than Crackdown has this shite NPC problem.

Could you spoiler for me which character's mission thread gets me over to the next island? I'm on about 28% but stopped playing for a bit because I was fed up of failing Brucie's race mission.

How can you fail that?! The trick is to not drive fast. As long as you drive safe and don't crash you should finish first. So no need to panic and try to rush through. I was nervous about that mission and was glad to see the back of it. There better not be more compulsory racing missions!

Sure thing.

As soon as you start working with Playboy, the main Island opens. I haven't done further than the second Brucie mission and as soon as the novelty of the Big Smoke wears off, I'll get back to him.

Cheers, I'll give it a go more carefully. I know I'll be able to do it with a few attempts but I messed it up a couple of times by getting flustered and crashing badly, and I was too annoyed to face going through the slow build up again (driving to the car etc.), after re-trying a previous mission loads of times. I switched off in a huff

Yes, and this is where i find "in car" cam a boon as you can judge games a little better at speed. Its true though, you tend to drive like a nutter because you can. In real life you wouldn't drive anything like as fast.

The mission entitled Hostile Negotiations nearly had me stabbing someone in real life.

First try I plain died coming to the end, second time I shot Roman by accident, third time I didn't shoot the guy in time, fourth time I saved Roman, got in the escape car, and drove over an explosive thing, killing us both. Fifth time I managed it. Annoying that you had to start the whole mission again even after you save him, but that's life for being so stupid I guess.

I managed that fine on my first try, but as I was making my way to the room where Roman was, there was a guy behind cover in the door and I couldn't get an angle on him. I shot him in the arms a few times, downed him then repeated and downed him again. Made my way into the room and he got back up and started to shoot me.

I was just about to do the first Brucie mission

(the one where you start by stealing a cop car to use its computer) when unprompted and without a call from me, one rolled around the corner. It was driving quite slowly when a bit further down the road a small fight began to break out between 2 pedestrians. Cop car stops and both officers get out, pointing their guns at the culprits. They practically stopped right in front of me, talk about luck! Hoped right in and drove off.

I did that mission earlier this afternoon. Fighting my way through that mission was brilliant, my favourite yet and I did it in one go - with just one shot at the end.

Don't fuck with my family!

Can we ban all the people in this thread moaning about - the music - mission restarts - frame rates (IE PS3 owners) - NPC's who die (even though it is your mission to protect them - go on admit it you weren't watching them like you were supposed to and they died) - the cover system - the phone - the map icons - checkpoints - you fucking name it!:P :P

Just shoot out as many of the opponents tyres as you can on the opening straight, then just take it easy for the rest of the race as they'll all gradually fade into the distance.
