GTA:IV Official Thread

A new game built by my company goes gold and gets sent off for replication, packaging and shipment. The loading screen locks up. The game freezes up during cinematic scenes.

Now, should we initiate a recall? Take the number of games in the field, A, multiply by the probable rate of failure, B, multiply by the average cost of returns, C. A times B times C equals X. If X is less than the cost of a patch, we don't do one.

I live near the river and sea something like liberty city without the fun and i tell you what they nailed the misty atmosphere when its hot and you get like a mist of the sea and river they nailed the fooker big time. This game is just out of this world.

Another couple of great touches I've just remembered.

When you fail a mission and re-do it, if you have a companion in the car for the mission the dialogue between the two of you is different the second time round.

I love how everything has a nice weighty solid feel to it. It's easy to knock down fire hydrants when you're blasting along, but if you go up to one slowly and nudge it, it won't budge, even if you floor it, you have to have some real momentum to knock it over.

I had a great car chase on the first mission you need to use the

police computer for Brucie

, had a truck spill barrels over the road then a flatbed with poles/logs spill its cargo. Had me raving about how good the randomness of the game world is to my gf. Only to see her do the mission herself today and see the 2 trucks were scripted which totally ruined the experience I had .

The only disappointing aspect for me is that the free mode is pretty empty. I wanted to be able to go bowling or do the other things you can do in single player. I didn't expect to be able to play the entire single player 'campaign' with other players, but it'd be nice to have a pseudo freemode/mayfia where you can just bum around doing random missions.

It could also do with a few more of the co-op modes. They are really good, but a bit too easy to complete and once you've completed them a couple of times they are a bit pedestrian.

Other than that the game has lived up to the hype for me.

I did wonder that as you don't see too many log lorries - i'm sure they drive about but i've just not seen them.

I'll be honest - i quite prepared to give Rockster then benefit of the doubt with many of the faults because so much heart and soul has gone into this game.

You can obviously see that and its not like you look around and think - "hmm, they're not exactly pushing the machine" because you know they are.

So with that in mind a few scripted events don't really bother me. I'm not sure the whole of that mission is scripted.

It may depend on what happens before you get to the same point - so if you get to the bridge there later (IE you've crashed en-route), the lorries are further down or are alongside another car - so despite being scripted, it doesn't matter because the route the lorries follow is so long, your see the same two lorries but they're not where they were.

I mean, they're bound to be on the same bridge, but its a bloody long bridge.

According to the rockstar social club ive run 22,600 miles and won my gold liberty city marathon award. sweet, certificate printed off

That would be alot of running !

I got in the speed boat for the first time and was really impressed with the whole look/feel/sound of the experience. The game continues to amaze me.

Finally got myself all pimped out, got my$1000 suit, my top of the range sports car, course now I drive everywhere trying not to crash  Would be quite interesting to have a thread on how people play the game, from what I`ve gleaned from throughout this rambling monstrosity of a thread everyone has a totally different way of approaching it.

Strange, the 360 disks seem fine

In the interest of balance, I've experienced the same thing on the 360. The first date with Michelle, it took its time (a couple of minutes) loading the "she might like the cabaret" cutscene before hanging indefinitely on the next load.

It's been fine since and I was able to go back to the dash that one time without resetting the console.

Some of the hidden stuff is quite interesting to find. You don't realise at first but its amazing how much of this game is on multi levels - structurally that is so finding some of the stuff is a puzzle in itself.

Not something i usually care about but its just another layer of depth for those who like to explore the world a bit deeper.

All the mission car chases are scripted right down to every other car on the road doing exactly the same thing.

Like I said, the missions are not bad but atrocious.

Cant get this game on the 360 for love nor money. Have been to 4 different towns this morning and God knows how many different gaming shops. Everywhere has sold out of the 360 version though I did find it a bit odd that only 1 shop I went to had sold out of the PS3 version.

When I did that mission I saw the barrels fall out the back of the truck, but didn't see the log-lorry at all.

Sounds like they have done just that on the PS3

Hey now! The games are identical in everyway, and the PS3 service is FREEEEEEEEEE! No paying for stupid Xbox Live LOL!!!

The missions are atrocious? Jesus Christ.

They are. The rest is amazing, though.

I have absolutely zero interest in being told to kill someone by some ghetto dickhead before having scripted chases and gunfights with targets who are totally invulnerable until you're actually supposed to off them, in a game which lives on its freedom, openness and randomity.

Just dicking about, especially online, is a million times more fun.

There are issues with the missions which can be frustrating , but they are FAR from atrocious. There are some real gems mixed in with the annoying ones.

My worst one so far is the train chase Second try I thought, hell i know wheres its going, set a waypoint on my map before i started the mission and drove straight there, still failed because my route took me too far from the train :/ pfffft

Most of the other missions have been great, loving those setpiece gunfights and run from the cop scenarios, also enjoyed the construction yard and LOVED the

pickup with the phone call. Knew I should have shot him in the head while he sat there but i called him back and he made a run for it, queue a tense time trying to snipe him through the trees as he got further and further away, finally he disappeared from view completely I kept tracking him and shot him through the bushes. Sweet

I'm sure you've tried this, but I found once or twice that I had to press Start or X to get it going after it's loaded.

Edit: Oh, hold on...you mean when the actual mission title is on screen. Nope, haven't had that - I just had to press Start when the pictures were still going. But then maybe it was my imagination and timing which caused the illusion of that having an effect.

Whaddaya fucking know! The very next time I play it, it DOES happen to me!

Disabling the PS3's internet connection has got it working again for me. I've also heard that deleting the install BUT NOT YOUR SAVE may also do the trick.

OK, the games just hung again! That's the forth time. Not forgetting the non-loading auto-saves, self-re-booting system and having to delete and re-install the entire game.

It's the worst problems I've ever had with a console game. I've got a US PS3 and am playing a PAL GTAIV. I think I'm going to give this game a miss until they sort out the fuck ups.

What do we reckon it is? Bugs in the game or crappy disc manufacturing?

They're shit. Even THAT mission everyone raves about is the same tedious bullshit, but busier.

Seriously dude - maybe you should try a different game as GTA is obviously not for you.

I've been happily playing my UK copy in my US PS3 in HD but now when I've brought it to a friends house it won't work at all in SD. Simply a message saying the game is not playable in this display mode. Is there a way around this? Do other games have this problem?
