GTA:IV Official Thread

However, it IS cheating because before you attempt a mission you have no idea what the objective will be or the areas that would benefit from being blocked. You can only know those things after failing the mission once.

This.

You're going on about breaking the immersion with the window thing, Kerraig, but trying to 'break' a mission before it's even starting? That's like setting about the immersion with a sledgehammer.

TBH I'm annoyed that the game doesn't let me control everything by my thoughts, and I don't have flying cars and robot man servants in real life THIS IS THE YEAR 200* TOMORROWS WORLD SAID TI WOULD BE AND THEYU SLDILIE LIEEDDD!!!

It's hardly asking for the moon on a stick for the game to have the same freedoms and open-mission approach that GTA3 did. That game came out seven years ago, and was the one that made us all love GTA. That the latest game in the series is the most linear and the most restrictive in how you tackle missions is a bit rubbish, and I think you probably understand that point despite you pretending not to for some reason.

It's a great game, but I think Rockstar have got their priorities wrong. Several missions I've played so far have had more effort put into the cutscenes than they have into the actual level design; you get a minute or two of quite well-written dialogue and excellent motion capture and performance, followed by some perfunctory mission involving you driving from one side of the city to another and killing four or five people.

Not for us? We're still playing.

Oh man how good was it when Spacehost was escaping on the boat and my TACTICAL DECISION to stay behind with a rocket launcher to take you both out WORKED OUT FINE!

erm, except saints row is 2 years old, cost less than a third of the budget to make, took half as long to program, and it managed to get a lot of that stuff right.

It's a soul-less, ultimately dull experience, that swings between too easy and too hard.

Saints Row has an awful city, cluttered to help the terrible frame rate, an awful road systems, rubbish slow cars (see road system, frame rate), and a story that's utter crap.

A "lot of stuff right" does not make an outstanding game. Especially as it was "a lot" of stuff which wasn't very important...and it wasn't really "a lot".

Murray invited me into a multiplayer game - my first go at multi ever - but about 5 mins after I came in everyone there left. Ouch.

Dunno what mode it was on, free roam online I think since there were no mission objectives or anything.

thankyou so much zy. You're exacly on my page. I'm not saying the game isnt amazing cos it clearly is. just saying how much more amazing it could have been (best game ever material) if they'd paid a bit more attention to a few things like checkpoints and freedom of choice. Not TOTAL freedom, but more than 'cutscene resets everything'

You're right. Again bang on.

"They" clearly didn't realise or know what they were doing. What idiots, what fools! Oh the irony! We could all do better right?

Here's your stick. Here's your moon. Go suck on it.

Tried shooting up the apartment to see if would attract the police (as someone mentioned it did earlier). It does, AND they come into your apartment to (try to) arrest you.

Shooting the radiator in the room results in little arcs of water pouring out of the bullet holes too.

Article here about the ps3 version being at a lower resolution then the 360, is this true? I've only played the 360 version.

http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2008/05/01/gt...n_and_uk_sales/

Yes it is. We've been over this. There's a few differences here and there.

There's a good comparison vid with a chopper flying over the city. 360, smooth. PS3, chugging every second or so. It's small but its noticable.

Look guys. We know the PS3 version wasnt ready for release, which is why the game was delayed. So the PS3 was obviously not going to be up to speed onthe 360 version. Just like about every other game that's had a 360 lead/not been in development from the very start.

Also seeing as Rockstar "can't even get things like disappearing cars right, the IDIOTS", do you expect them to be able to do this? LOL

Got drunk for the first time in the game this evening. Brilliantly implemented. The way Niko sways all over the place and half the time you're walking backwards is excellent.

It's also really smart for the driving parts. The wobbly camera, loose handling, etc. Only thing is it makes me feel physically sick. I've never suffered motion sickness before (game playing or elsewhere) and it's really quite disturbing. Feeling fine to proper near vomming in about 15 seconds. Disturbing.

I

killed Playboy X. It was a tough decision, but I decided I liked Dwayne more; he was more grounded and less up his own arse than Playboy, and I reckon I can trust Dwayne more.

He actually reacts fairly well; not happy, but gives you respect for doing a difficult thing. And then he gives you Playboy's apartment. I think i did the right thing, if killing someone on his best mate's orders ever counts as right.

Yeah when it came to that (choice between two characters on the second island) I

killed Playboy X as well. Looking on the internet, it seems like a lot of people did. I thought he was a bit of a prick really, so I didn't find it tough. As soon as I left his house the last time, I started phoning around like mental trying to trigger the event that would let me go back and kill him!

So help me out here, and apologies if there's another thread for this...

Does anyone know anywhere in London that has this in stock that I can go get it from tomorrow?

I tried my local Blockbuster, Argos, Morrisons and Independent (all in Shepherds Bush), all sold out. Is it just impossible to get at this stage :(

I wanna play it whilst you folks all still are for some multiplayer shizzle...

Oh and even not having played the game I agree with Kerraig 100%. I know that those type of things would niggle with me too. And I love the Hitman series too.

Hell, as Steven Poole points out, when your characters feet map through the floor occasionally in 3D games, that instantly (but often subconsciously) breaks some of the immersion. When your cars disappear in GTA3, VC, IV, etc. it's much much worse. They need to nail some of those bits, even if it's at the cost of something else...

Yeah. That wasn't very nice. :(

As far as the single player game itself, I'm about 7 missions in and it's okay, but I'm not sure I'm loving it. I've never played a GTA game properly before, I normally just mess around on San Adreas with the cheats on, letting me choose any vehicle or weapon or location at will. So it's kinda frustrating having to do missions and that with this one rather than putting the cheats on and going crazy.

I'm not really liking the handling of the cars at all - I actually can't turn a corner because the brakes on every car are just so bad. So I find on missions I'm driving around at snails pace to avoid accidentally smacking into walls/police cars etc. The steering is too odd, too.

I much prefer Burnout Paradise's perfect handling, graphics and smooth frame rate. I'll probably get used to all this though, it is just my first day of playin it.

The handling is incredible.

The brakes are fine, I bet you're braking whilst you're going around a corner. Brake before it, take it at a reasonable speed depending on the car (sports cars corner a lot, lot better) and give the handbrake a very short jab if you're understeering.

If it feels weird try the bonnet cam. It's brilliant.

I saw it as like

a choice between killing Stringer Bell and killing Avon Barksdale. Avon's the flashy top dog and Stringer's devious, but I know which one I'd rather have indebted to me.

You know it's strange. When Just Cause appears on the 360 and can keep about 4 cars on screen at once, with them often disappearing behind you, and now GTA4 appears with this amazing world, outstanding animation, much improved combat, amazing multiplayer modes, awesome characters and story...and people still complain when there's about 3 or 4 perceived "errors" amongst all this?

To think JC got a 7 in Edge and people on here thought it was good. Christ. Imagine if Rockstar had churned out that piece of unfinished shovelware. You'd all have blown up. Because JC was very, very bad, and it did just about EVERYTHING wrong - yet people still liked it!

R* are victims of their own success and expectations blown out of proportions by the media and the fans.

Imagine if we found out that, technically, the car disappearing thing was impossible to solve due to the constraints of the hardware. You know, I bet you lot would still say "That's rubbish" and blame the developers.

I AM RANTING.

I completely disagree. I guess my sense of immersion isn't as fragile as some of the huge moaners on here, who are usually compounding their problems by not following on-screen instructions or comparing it awkwardly to totally different games.

The speed of the cars does feel strange, particularly if you're coming from Burnout or PGR. "High speed" chases now arn't all that fast per se but they are nail biting at times as you career roung bends narrowly avoiding lamp posts, getting the back end step out. When I'm in a chase now I stay on the correct side of the road, pulling out to overtake, then duck back in rather than staying head on with traffic.

It's more pedestrian but I think it's much better for it.

Car > Car combat would not work as well at higher speeds.
