Is the gunplay/cover system not very good or does it just take quite a while to get used to.

Takes a while to get used to I think. Just like the driving.

It's quite impressive for a third person game who's main focus isn't necessarily on shooting things.

It's no Gears, but it's good enough. I think the drama of the gun battles relies really heavily on the context of the situation, and set pieces. There's no real tactics you can use, other than staying behind cover and not letting them get to the side or behind you. Still manages to always be fun though, due to the great feel of the weapons and the way they go down when you shoot them.

Yeah, a one shot tap leading to a headshot with an AK is awesome.

Well Ive finally found a piece of Kevlar armour on the map so you dont have to keep buying it. Its here if youre interested (its easy to find but a bit tricky to describe)

On the first island head east from your Safehouse. Head to the piece of motorway that loops around on the South east side. There should be a junkyard type area on the inside of the motorway where it curves (not outside near the sea) You should see it glowing in the boot of a knackered old wreck of a car.

Alternatively if you look at the ingame map its on the L shaped piece of road just under the word Brooker on the Brooker Dukes Expressway.

If I could draw where it is I would.. but I cant :(

Nice one!

1) So I can let people go instead of killing them? I let that guy after the rooftop chase early on go, but that was with it prompting me. But I could do it to other people too? How?

2) How do you kiss Michelle? The only thing I can ever do is drop her off at her house and then "try my luck" (and she always puts out, that slag), but I've never been able to kiss her.

Naw, it's always prompted.

The shooting is great. Really satisfying, a good challenge, weapons feel great, great cover system.

Yeah, I'm finding I'm dropping them with nice headshots pretty quickly now, I couldn't play without the lock on though - the fights would take ages that way! :( It's great the options are there for different playing tastes.

Theres been a couple of people through the game who ive thought "i'm gonna let this one go" but then when the time comes a cutscene kicks in and I'm forced to murderise them. Real shame there isnt more moral choice.

man, i really fluctuate between loving this and being incredibly dissappointed by how linear/limited it is.

Just watched a mate playing this on the PS3 for a few mins and the framerate was all over the place. Is this just on the PS3, or possibly the resolution it's been set to?

I really want this after seeing him play it but i'm half inclined to wait for the PC version.

Listen, the game is fine. It's amazing. It's one of the best games ever made.

Just buy it.

You know many games ala GTA that have non limited/non linear stories?

I must confess to being slightly underwhelmed on the first few hours play. I think that comes down to being so spoiled with the PC versions of the previous games. I always held out for that version and I never for a second regretted doing so. Playing GTA without a rock solid 60fps and good FSAA is really quite noticeable and challenging as well. I just hope it is something I can get used to as the care and attention they have put into it is astounding. Reminds me of a Valve game in terms of just how central the gamer's enjoyment is to what they have tried to achieve.

I do wonder if Rockstar have enough top, top programmers who are able to deal with the incredibly complex stuff - in particular, AI, collisions and animation.

The AI is still incredibly basic, the animation 'transitions' (for example from standing to swimming) are often lacking, and the collisions are often very dubious - you end up climbing thin air, hovering over things etc.

I guess most of the time and budget went on producing the game content which is of course massive, but I wish there had been a bit more focus on improving the core engine code.

I think it's fair to say a lot of the missions are needlessly linear though. There are some really good missions where you can plan ahead, park a getaway vehicle, use different, more discreet entrances but in the main, it engages the start of the mission when you reach a location and you're forced to start shooting / start a pursuit. Some missions are as good as levels in Hitman but the worst are the same as the bad ones from the other GTAs. There are also missions that have blown most other games out of the water though.

It's not something I'd criticise it for really with everything else it's doing but I can see what the complaints are based on. I absolutely adore the game and it's really surprised me as I wasn't a GTA fan.

So, Algonquinners (as in those who have made it quite a bit through the Manhattan style island), what did you choose in the major dilemma? You'll know the one.

I offed Dwayne to put the poor sod out of his misery, but Playboy's response made me feel sad and angry, in quite a special way. I guess Dwayne reacts in a negative way if you kill Playboy X?

TOO MUCH FUCKING AWESOME MOMENTS!

Really, I just played for barely two hours, but I've had dozens of memorable moments. Like when I went out to kill

Vlad

after Roman complained about his 'girl' 'cheating', I hopped into my Banshee, did the trick, LOVED the cut-scene, only to find out that my car had been jacked... and found another two streets later.

Or when I drove around town with Little Jacob, coming across a bike (PCJ-600 I recall), only to lose it because of a stupid freeze at a burger stand. The hunt for a new fast bike has just begun!

And the cut-scene before 'Crime and Punishment' really cracked me up

its not the story I have a problem with. its more the 'gamey' elements. If I park a car round the back of a laundrette to block a van in that I know will be used for a getaway, I dont expect the car to have magically vanished after the cutscene. This is NEXT GEN GTA, theyve had 5 years to work out the most important things to fix.

Theres 5 or 6 relatively small fixes that almost everyone agrees would improve the game 10 fold. TYhe hugely derivative saints row got about 4 of them right. Why cant this?

That's cheating. You're complaining because you're not allowed to cheat?

Eh? how is intiative cheating? I'm using tools that the game has put in my hands. Is shooting tyres cheating too?

As far as i'm concerned, making cars dissappear is the game cheating, not the other way round.

Well why not re-align your next, next gen ideals. Perhaps they wanted to do it, you know, but couldnt?

For goodness sake! You'd have thought that Rockstar are pretty good, have a few people working for them, and they certainly would do it if they wanted to!

Why do people complain so much! AMAZE, pure amaze.

TBH I'm annoyed that the game doesn't let me control everything by my thoughts, and I don't have flying cars and robot man servants in real life THIS IS THE YEAR 200* TOMORROWS WORLD SAID TI WOULD BE AND THEYU SLDILIE LIEEDDD!!!

Seriously. People think this shit is easy? It's not like making a film - point here, point there.

The cars shouldn't disappear, it breaks the illusion of the world. There's obviously a technical reason it happens though, I doubt they would 'accidentally' do something like that.

However, it IS cheating because before you attempt a mission you have no idea what the objective will be or the areas that would benefit from being blocked. You can only know those things after failing the mission once.

I do agree you should be able to do it though
