GTA:IV Official Thread

I know its almost criminal to mention Saints row in this thread, but that game still does a few things better.

- Mission checkpoints. Not having to start from the beginning of a 3 patr mission is a godsend.

- Going on missions with a whole gang. I love in saints row picking up gang memebers and cruising to a gunfight with an army. Dunno if this'll have that later in game but it makes for some crazy goings on.

- Shooting out tyres on AI cars. Its an almost guaranteed pile up in saints rown if you shot the whhels of a moving vehicle. In this it does practically nothing.

- "The guy got away". in saints row if you're in a chase and you crash your car, the guy you're chasing will pull over and come try to finish you off. i thought this was a brilliant way of overcoming the GTA syndrome of having some unfortunate collision and messing up the whole mission because of it. Amazed GTA hasnt learned from this.

As blatant a clone as Saints row was, i cant believe that GTA is still behind on some fronts.

I've found a possible fault - or it might just be that I've not played long enough. In there being no kill frenzies or hidden packages a large (not the only, but large) reason for exploring is gone. What's the point of running around all four corners of the map and not just following the missions? Please someone banish this criticism for me :(

Also, I ran into a person, triggering a cutscene where he randomly gave me some money. I think. Was I dreaming? What's this about?

Quests dotted about, usually a figure on the radar. I've found 4 so far.

Does anyone else actively swerve to hit motorcyclists?

Flying rats are the new hidden packages, and that cutscene happened to me, too. There's a bunch of smaller missions with blue icons on the mini-map.

Was some crap magician and then a girl singing about life.

Heheh you should go there a few more times, the shows have their merits I think:

The magician's assistant is his ex girlfriend, hence how violent their routine becomes. The singing gal used to be a man, that's kind of the joke.

THIS IS ENTIRE GAME IS GENIUS.

Oh and another thing I applaud Rockstar for; making a game that allows you skinning up time without pausing. Taxi rides ftw! I haven't been able to roll & play like this since Wind Waker!! :D

Yes, make sure you hold B then click in the left stick while doing so for maximum lols :(

Not much of a car chase...

I disagree, it worked brilliantly. They only ever got out if things went horribly wrong. Hitting a lamppost wouldnt trigger it, but turning your car onto its roof or landing on the grass verge at the side of the road would.

And it produced much better car chases than "the guy has got away, press A to retry from teh start"

This is doing my head in.

In Steinways...

How do you buy a beer?

And can anyone else confirm that the people in the seats flicker/glitch/disappear from certain angles?

You can only get drunk on 'drinking' missions. Sucks huh.

Also, yeah the people sitting down glitch all over the place if I attack em. i think euphoria maybe cant deal with seated AI/obstructions too well yet

What I don't like about the missions so far is you get a lot where you gotta go take someone out but if they're in a house you think "ah yeah time to do this shit my way" but you get a cutscene and Niko basically says "I'm gonna kill you" so they always run off and it's a chase scene. Would have been nice to be able to take them out how you like.

Right, it must be me but I bloody HATE doing any sort of car chases...

The one where you have to chase the fella from the laundrette.... I've attempted that a good 20 times now and he always gets away. I've tried blocking the door off, I've tried blocking the road with cars, but somehow he is always about a mile away by the time you get out of the door. And the fact there's no big arrow over him means I end up not seeing him even when he's right infront of me, even when I press B. How are you supposed to do that one?

Okay so they're trying for something more 'real' but those big shiny arrows over targets were very helpful indeed. Maybe it's my poor eyesight but I am beginning to hate booting this up now I have to redo this effing mission over and over :(. Didn't think I'd get stuck this early on.

I've had two of those so far. They remind me a little of the Marty Tonks dogfood factory missions back in GTAIII for some reason.

I've taken to playing the game in quite a civilised manner without unnecessary violence or car jacking and then I finish off every game with a nice chaotic gun fight.

Just played for an hour or so and then holed myself up in the Clucking Bell with a handgun, shotgun and a micro smg and hid behind the doorframe to the cooking area whilst fighting off the cops.

I managed to last quite a while but whilst reloading a cop stormed through and blasted me in the face with a shotgun. I'd like to think that he heard me reloading and took the opportunity to kill me but I know it was just a coincidence.

Oh, the blind firing mechanism is great for keeping groups of police back.

Blindfire + narrow corridor + shotgun = lots of injured/dead police officers

Not sure if this has been mentioned before but was I the only one who was hugely upset to switch on the TV in Niko's apartment to find that

Ricky Gervais

was on?

No. I hate that smug fat cunt as much as anyone. I only hope I can batter him to death later on.

How do you blind fire? Also, how do you roll or slide to cover?
Right bumper for cover.

Think only your buddies can slide to cover, but I think its blue x on the 360 to roll, I have only done it on one mission by mistake then forgot about it, I think you have to be zoomed in on a gun or something.

There is an equivilent to hidden packages in this game and there's 200 of them to find.

They are bloody difficult to find too.. found 12 so far, they are certainly in more obsucre places than previous GTA's and them being so small doesnt help matters either.

I just hope that it rewards you by gradually unlocking weapons back at your safehouse (like in the previous games) as that was always the main incentive to go hunting for them.

When in cover you can press left or right + RB to slide or roll to other cover.

To blindfire don't hold LT when firing and Niko won't pop his head out, just shoot vaguely in the direction the camera is pointing.

Just got back to the game again: finally, after 48 hours of doing nothing (my PS3 is going back to Sony for repairs, I borrowed a friend's until then).

Had some awesome moments after a few minutes of playing again already: I hit some other car (a roadster) in the street across the rollercoaster, in which a guy was just lighting a sigaret. The interior of his car caught fire, as did he (hilarious sight), and his car exploded after a short while. That lit my car, which set a chain reaction. Just half a minute later: ten burning carwrecks, including an ambulance, a firetruck and some police cars. And 950 dollars :(

Another nice touch: both my brother and I did the mission in which you have to steal a Blista Compact car for Vlad, and while driving, you phone him. I punched the original owner of the car, while my brother blasted him with a shotgun. In my scenario, Niko was talking about 'some bruises', while he said the guy was dead when my brother was playing. Awesome detail!
