GTA:IV Official Thread

I went for a drink with Michelle on my motorbike. I got wankered, she didn't, and I fell into my bike and knocked it over before picking it up and driving, at a very low speed, down the road. I had The Journey on, and Philip Glass' 'Pruit Igoe' came on. God. It was wonderful. It felt like a deleted scene from Koyaanisqatsi.

:)

And where were you when the reviews were saying the PS3 version was better? You're deliberately trying to derail this thread and it's annoying.

I was waiting to see side-by-side comparisons and not rely on print media/"journalists".

Was I right to? Why, yes.

Great, I had a fucking bug. I picked up Little...Pete? I can't remember, Jamaican fella, as he wanted to go somewhere to chill. After fucking ages of searching I find a burger place - not very classy, but it was somewhere after ages. Finish the meal, no home comes on the map to take him to. So I go to the bar with him and get pissed. Still no home. And after that we couldn't go to any places, so I basically couldn't finish the mission and couldn't save it. What a fucking swizz. :) I probably should've killed myself.

So you were eager to find out which version would be best even though it would have no bearing on your purchase?

I was 99% certain the 360 version would be better. It made complete sense.

I just found it amaze at all the "they're identical" and "no differences between versions" spin that we'd received. Although, I wasn't amazed - a company and no doubt reviewers wanted to give it the best push possible. R* of course weren't going to say "The whole game was delayed because the PS3 version was a bag of spanners last year, and we've worked on it for another 6 months and it's great...but still not as technically proficient or as good looking as the 360 version. Sorry PS3 owners! It's still really, really, good - one of the best games ever. But it's not quite as polished on your console. Oh, also no DLC for you either."

I just didn't want people to lap it up so readily. Yet...

Ben, do you believe everything you read in the papers? :)

Why is that you and Chase were the most concerned by which version would be best, despite the fact that neither of you have both consoles?

He trolled me successfully true, I left the thread, and I could not abide his stupid blinkered "PS3 IS BETTER" slant to all his posts.

He had no information on the game or the games development, except via press releases and media previews. Yet all he did was spout out information regarding the game like were 100% fact.

I was concerned he was tilting right towards the PS3's favour, and to balance I gave him some solid, factual, reasons why the 360 would be better.

And yet, you're still talking rubbish. Neither version was ready.

Welcome to the world of videogame development.

God. Shut the fuck up about 360 vs. PS3, you tedious pricks.

People are asking me questions, I'm replying. Simple. The other thread was not to be re-opened, which would have sorted this of course.

Well I agree with Disciples point of view very much.

I'm genuinely VERY interested in which version of software performs better.

I notice everything from glitchy textures to dipping frame rates to horrid screen tearing and it annoys me a great deal in games.

For the record I think both versions of GTA4 perform below par. I was saying this before in this thread and got shot down by the rabid fan boys. Rockstar are NOT and have NEVER been cutting end in terms of their technology. The GTA games have always looked fugly and dated and run really quite badly and im unsurprised to see this new GTA isn't any different.

I am enjoying it a lot, but honestly the hype around this has got WAY out of hand. Its just another GTA, perhaps the best, but not by much.

Referring to which version is "best" which version performs better, it very much applies to me. I happen to own both consoles and I would buy the best performing version regardless of things like Control Pad and Online Friends.

I've had the opportunity to play both versions and I can categorically tell you that the PS3 version looks blurrier due to a lower resolution and runs at a MUCH worse framerate.

This is how it is.

All these post like "It doesn't matter just play the game", "Only a Prick would compare the two versions", Seem a lot like people sticking their fingers in there ears and shouting

"LA LA LA LA LA, I CAN'T HEAR YOU!"

Surely! the amount of rabid fanboy Hype in this thread would sway people to find out which version is the best, sure if people are psyched this much they want to get the best experience possible.

Hey guys, I heard there are ten pixels missing from the PS3 version and that it makes it much less good. Is this true?

That's your TV mate :)

Cant you just make a new thread for this shit?

I wanna read about peoples gameplay experiences.

I'm done now! Don't ask me anymore questions

Really? :) I've had so many moments already of 'being there' that most other games may now seem empty and lifeless in comparison.

I think why I'm not being fully sucked in into the GTA atmosphere has a lot to do with the tone of the game.

For example take the moment in Shenmue where you find the little cat in the box and can choose to feed it, or the part in Half Life 2 where you get to play fetch the ball with Dog. Those warmhearted little touches in games, I love 'em.

Sure GTA IV is full of little touches as well, but the tone is very different: more tongue-in-cheek orientade (a pedestrian that's talking on the phone over her favorite drug dealer, the radio stations, the television channels etc)) and ofcourse more violent.

there's nothing warmhearted in GTA IV, which is understandable as it wouldn't fit with the premise of the game.

This is one of those few sandbox games that is as fun to play as it is capitivating to hear people talk about amazing events.

With Oblivion, people would often talk about 'unique' moments and how impressive they were, but actually playing the game is usually quite mudane. Reading Smitty's excellent gameplay reports from earlier in the week, I feared the same would be true for this, but I've had a handful of similiarlly jawdropping moments myself so far.

It's a shame the thread has degenerated into mild spoilers and PS3v360 borefests since then, but I've got the game now so oh well.
