GTA:IV Official Thread

I really really like the graphics. On a technical level they're not flawless, but at the same time they seem so solid and 'there'. The rain and how light reflects off the street. How the colours change depending on weather and time of day. It's really atmospheric, there's so much detail and there's so much going on. I think that I'll be booting up San Andreas on the PS2 tonight while playing GTA IV and then switch between them a couple of times :)

I like the Visual tweaks you can implement via the Options as well

It seems that its true. In the comparison videos the PS3 version is noticably less sharp, and you get much nastier jaggies.

It's not surprising.

We went through this last night mind.

AND ITS ALL SO VERY INTERESTING.

Wow. The PS3 really comes off second best there.

Most notably the frame rate/slight chugging when the two helicopter/flying shots are put side-by-side near the end of the video. 360 is silky smooth in comparison.

Also shooting cops in the distance - not as clear on the PS3.

I'm going to smash my Ps3 and eat it.

In Shenmue or Half Life 2 Orange Box I loved to explore the environments, got really sucked into the atmosphere and admire the nice views etc yet GTA IV does nothing for me in that regard.

I really really want to like this game but at the moment it's just not working for me ;-(

On the UK:R thing, incredibly, it's true. I think another thread should be made for people who want to discuss the techinical nuances of display and frame rate. I dunno, I'm firmly in the "who gives a shit, just let me play and enjoy the wonderful atmospheric video game".

Anyways, another lovely touch an a massive step forward considering I'm seeing a lot of people go *shrug* "It's just like the other GTAs with nicer graphics" is the reaction to you of the pedestrians.

Motorbikes are my favourite, I find them easiest to use to navigate the traffic and tighter roads.

Anyway, on the way to 'Chelles I thought I'd found a nifty "corner cut" while coming north from our hovel of a starting place.

On my bike at high speed I catapulted up in the air off the kerb, smashed my head into a tree resulting in a plume of blood and ragdolled down the pavement. Nico just lay spark out, I just sat there in my chair pissing myself at what I'd seen.

It was the Peds reactions that made it truly amazing scenes though. A few guys came over, "Shit dude, are you all right?". A girl ran around with her hands on her head "Oh my god, he's dead! He's dead!".

Quality.

Controlling Nico reminds me of controlling Leon in Resi 4. Like a vehicle. It probably didn't help I was playing Assassin's Creed a couple of nights ago. It doesn't ruin the game for me but it is a bit annoying. I also found ladder climbing clumsy. You have to stand in exactly the right place, and when you're running it's hard to aim straight for the ladder. I've only had to climb ladders in that running across the roof bit though. It was nice of the guy I was chasing to keep stopping and waiting for me to catch up :)

Really? :) I've had so many moments already of 'being there' that most other games may now seem empty and lifeless in comparison.

100% this for me.

I walked for 20 minutes (literally 20 minutes in REAL LIFE TIME ) in the thunder and rain to an assassination mission last night. Fucking EPIC TIMES :)

Ok Disciple we get it :) You've become the 360 Chase man.

Thing is Chase would see the same video and find something wrong with the 360 footage so the opinions on it are kinda fruitless

I'm a realist here. I wanted to work out which was going to be best. Chase would see that, and lie. You can tell the 360 version is slightly better. It's noticable.

I knew which one was going to be best, so I'm vindicated, but if I'd been wrong I would have held my hands up. I bet Murray £100, he only took £20. That's confidence. I've won the bet obviously, he's not admitting it yet though :(

However loading* time going into interiors? 360 seems to come off almost 6 seconds worse!

We had a thread, which I suggest get closed until the game was released. For some reason we've not re-opened the thread...

Unfortunately people without any information on the game were spreading second hand rumours about how the games were going to compare.

You guys might be "Sick" of it all, but I do feel it's important to show and educate people the amount of spin and glossing over everyone did. R* themselves claimed the games were identical, websites didn't find anything wrong (although IGN somehow said the PS3 was better - which clearly it's not. I have no idea what's happened there...ahem!). The behind-closed-doors reviews too...

When I was calling for some calm and "don't get caught by the hype" no one seemed to believe me. *Loading times - you were all told "There's no loading", yet of course...

I just find it amazing how people buy into it all!

So, where's that other thread?

Jeezus, I never meant that thread disciple....

That's how I took the thread - well to work out which was going to be the best piece of software.

People should be told which is better IMO.

That loading time was nowhere near as bad on my 360. Very odd.

Oh, and LOL Sony

which thread do we talk about the game in? :)

if its this one then, GTA4 is lovely, watched almost an hour of TV in game last night, was pretty good, Halo/Gears pastiche was LOL, and the 258 piece knive set, more actual lol.

Multiplayer is of course ace, dont overlook the excellent coop Hangmans noose, its basically the gun scenes from heat plus the car chases from terminator 2 and Matrix reloaded combined = excellent 4 player larks.

So you'd be buying the PS3 version if reviews all said it was the best one?

I don't have a PS3, no. If I did...well maybe not cos Xbox Live and the Achievements are a big draw for me.

But then having said that, if I had both and had put sufficient time into the PS3 and had an online profile there...

So if it was a level playing field (for me) I believe I would have, yes.

Exploring in Half-Life 2? It's a corridor shooter, albeit one fairly well disguised as something else. You certainly can't explore like you can in sandbox games like GTA, Crackdown, AC, etc. That's a very odd choice of comparison.

HL2 is very clever in this respect because often it feels like there's a bigger world out there to explore than there is.

I got quite annoyed/stuck in Ravenholm for a long time though...

So you were eager to find out which version would be best even though it would have no bearing on your purchase?
