Well, yes obviously.

LOOK, I LIKED IT AND I LOLLED.

Sorry, er, thinking about my that post sounds a bit patronising.

Apologies.

What I meant was that I'd heard some people saying it was a Halo piss-take. I then saw your post and thought i'd make a point about it.

Yeah, it's great.

The focus of GTAIV is not free running. Therefore when I wasn't able to leap from building to building like the bastard stepchild of Splinter Cell, AC and Prince of Persia, I wasn't particularly bothered.

You couldn't leap between buildings in Animal Crossing?

I then paid my first trip to Tw@, and found a nice-looking car for sale in the small ads. Concocting a devious plan to steal it, I made a note of the buyer's phone number, then saw a link to a child beauty pageant website. I...erm....'accidentally' clicked the link, but the site was blocked by the police, and I heard over the radio something like "all units, there's a sexual deviant in the Tw@ cafe." Cue a four-star escape (peados must be way up on the LCPD's priorities), with me ending up just outside the police search area back on Hove Beach.

That's great.

Ont he calling numbers from your phone thing, I was spazz-handing it a bit last night.

What do I push to "dial" after I have keyed the numbers in using the L stick and A button?

Probably something horribly simple....

Left from the 1 button to the dial button.

Had a quick go at lunchtime and got into trouble with the police (after a random gunfight on the street) and ended up with three stars and a bunch of cars, helicopters and 4x4s on my tail. Halfway through the chase, my car engine cut out due to all the hammer I'd given it and I set off on foot down an alley between two buildings. The next thing there's a massive explosion as the helicopter crashes above me, plunging to the alley floor, followed closely by the bodies of it's occupants, one of whom landed right at my feet!

I must say due to the increased realism some of the 'typically random GTA stuff' has a lot more impact. Picture the scene, a pretty small road through some poor residential area. It's quite late at night, and it's raining. The streets are wet and my car is on its last legs. I smash into the side of a dumpster and it catches fire, so I get out. As I've only played for a couple of hours without any significant explosions, I want to watch the car explode but I get harassed by a local who got irritated because I smashed the dumpster in his back.

So I cap his butt and he goes down while the car explodes, setting 4 other cars on fire. An ambulance arrives and the driver comes out trying to reanimate the guy. However, he parked his car next to another flaming vehicle which explodes resulting in his passenger running out of the car, burning and screaming and going down. All the while, the first ambulance guy is still reviving my victim, talking to him to keep him concious, completely oblivious of the cruel fate of his colleague. Then the ambulance explodes, killing the ambulance driver and my victim.

I'm just out of the line of fire and then it's all quiet and eerie again, until a waste disposal truck beeps his horn because he wants to pass and has trouble navigating through the debris and corpses. While the sun is coming up the two guys on the back of the truck discuss something I can't quite follow and then it's business as usual.

I love that shit.

Well this has settled in now the filter that made me go eh at the beginning has now shown it subtle beauty it just looks so bloody gorgeous.

Taking care of my cars has now become an obsession.

A nice little touch i noticed. I stole a police car and typed in the names of characters i know come later in the game and they were on the database.

Tell you what else is totally fucking cool. In the 10 hours I played the cops never got too close to busting me (I'm yet to be busted - I had the most problems with braking my car in time for the toll bridge and getting a crazy wanted level on the highway for smashing through the barrier by accident) but one time they did bust me on foot I stood with my hands up and I got the opportunity to "press A to make a break for it" in the top left corner.

So I did, and got another Wanted Star, but lost them with my mad skills.

Cool as fuck little touch in the game.

Yeah, I love how just before dawn, garbage trucks start making their rounds.

The ice-cream van is great too - the music fucks up the more damaged it gets.

Anyone know if this is true or if it's just UK:R having a laugh?

Unfortunately, the "subtle, soft warmth" of the PS3 version turns out to be the SHOCKING revelation that the game only runs in 640p and can't even manage any anti-aliasing. That means it is doing close to 30 percent less work just to maintain its lower-than-the-360-version-framerate.

It is really lovely. I also followed the advice to notch up the brightness and contrast and add a tiny bit of saturation. It looks more vivid now and I can finally 'see in the dark' as the night and shadowy parts were pretty much solid black before.

You can call the cops and shit to your locale.

Hehe - had the most epic getaway from some gang members last night, thanks to this very feature!

I'd just finished a mission, and had about 3 or 4 cars tailing me, all firing uzis from the windows.. Using my best crab hand, I dialled 911 and asked for the police while doing a quick u-turn. I drove straight back through the mobsters, who didn't even get to finish turning around before the cops showed up! It was only one copper at first, but soon it was me being chased by some gangsters, who were in turn getting chased by a bunch of cops!!

Doesn't get more awesome than this!

HURRY UP HOME TIME.

I was in a cop chase last night and my car got spun out and into a pillar. So I'm there gunning the accelerator and the engine is just grumbling and going silent. Nico keeps turning the key and then starts hammering the steering wheel and says 'Come on COME ON you piece of stupid American shit!'. The car roared into life and the chase went on.

Wonderful.

Hehe - I found the 'pretending' to give up works wonders once you have grenades too... Since you can just drop them and leg it off :)

It seems that its true. In the comparison videos the PS3 version is noticably less sharp, and you get much nastier jaggies.

It's not surprising.

We went through this last night mind.

It's not so much that the graphics themselves are particularly impressive, but more the amount of...of...STUFF going on all at once whilst still looking (fairly) gorgeous. The little effects used, the sheer detail in absolutely everything (cockroaches running around in the kitchen in the crackhouse you visit with LJ for example) and the fact there are no loading screens.

I really really like the graphics. On a technical level they're not flawless, but at the same time they seem so solid and 'there'. The rain and how light reflects off the street. How the colours change depending on weather and time of day. It's really atmospheric, there's so much detail and there's so much going on. I think that I'll be booting up San Andreas on the PS2 tonight while playing GTA IV and then switch between them a couple of times :)

Give it a rest, Disciple or we'll have Chase spewing out all the evidence to the contrary and the thread will be shit again.

Probably already posted in this thread (I skimmed the last chunk of pages, but at the rate this thread moves I'd never find it), but a decent PS3 vs 360 comparison video.

Wow. The PS3 really comes off second best there.

Most notably the frame rate/slight chugging when the two helicopter/flying shots are put side-by-side near the end of the video. 360 is silky smooth in comparison.

Also shooting cops in the distance - not as clear on the PS3.
