GTA:IV Official Thread

First PS3 game if ever had to adjust the brightness/contrast for - was a bit murky in the darker, shadowy areas. I like the colour palette on the PS3, but the jaggies are certainly noticeable.

Anyway, only played a few hours and completed the first batch of 'tutorial' tasks. Really enjoying the feel of the city and have had so many funny moments already. Pedestrians are more lively now and offer up some choice comebacks for my dodgy driving or violent behaviour. This is what the PS2 versions were like in my head, but not on my screen. Just getting yourself onto a roof and enjoying watching the city below is a great experience.

Heh, I had to turn up the colour settings a notch. It's got a beautiful murky look to it, but on the default settings was just a tad too murky for my eyes.

I went on a tramp killing spree earlier when I got lost in the subways (earning a 15 minute 6 star uncostested by cops, if anyone's looking to cheat the 5 minute achievement). It was like Apt Pupil Goes East or something.

I watched Republican Space Rangers on the TV tonight. Needless to say, it blows anything that [adult swim] have ever shown clean out of the water. Even Dethlok Metalocalypse. It was when I noticed the massive reference to another game that I became convinced that the TV is one of the best things in any game ever.

I wonder how many more cock and balls shaped things I've yet to see. It reminds of that scene in Superbad where the fat kid keeps drawing personified cocks.

Have many people run into those weirdoes on the street marked by people shaped markers? Some drunk guy gave me 100 last night out of the blue. I'd read about it in an interview but I still think it's a cool wee touch to add in randomers like you'll met in a big city.

Yeah, met some dope fiend or something that gave me 100 bucks for nothing. I'm glad I just ignored GTAIV until it came out, enjoying it so much more from not having been wound up with hype about it.

Also playing multiplayer with a couple of friends last night and we discovered bout 5 helicopters parked up on the southeast of the first island, maybe a little more up the east side than at the corner, but right against the coast. I need to check if they're still there in normal single player later. ;)

Ooh, I'll check for those copters later.

I'm really liking the car handling now - each model has such a different feel that trying a new one is a joy. Cornering in some is still tricky but a short early stab of the handbrake to get the rear coming around does work well.

Found the UFO nutters before - hope there's many more weirdos to come across!

Its all very good so far, it tends to take me a while to get into GTA games due to the size of the game. I really do feel like a complete stranger when playing this game, not really sure where to go and what to do...

Really enjoying it so far ;)

PS. Does anyone else think that the "jump" is still shit like the previous games? Infact, I'm finding the on foot controls and "cover" system really sluggish. Maybe I just need to get used to it...

Im having a little trouble with the taxi, I keep stealing them then I just want to ride as a passenger?

How do you hail them down?

Yeah, I had this problem. After trying for five minutes to hail and use a bloody taxi and finding myself in a street with half a dozen abandoned taxi's and as many taxi drivers standing around in shock, I finally received a prompt.

Hold the left bumper to hail them, then press Y to get in. You have to wait to be told how to do it though.

Holding the Y button makes Niko go into the passenger seat. Tapping it makes him jump in the front.

Liking this police radar thing. It kinda gives you an objective when you're being chased and a sense of closure when you're outside the zone, which I think the previous games lacked.

Multiplayer deathmatch was a bit wierd though. I'm notorious for getting lost on FPS maps in multiplayer and consequently never seeing/killing anyone. I found deathmatch in GTA to be the same x100. I very rarely saw any of the other players and when I got to the place where the action was, everyone was either dead or had moved on.

The world as a whole feels more solid this time round although the TV had to cope with the myriad of fans on the 360 kicking in. It was also a bit disappointing that movement slowed to atreacle pace at some points.

Played it for about 4 hours last night and felt the start was a bit slow. Also had a few frustrating moments trying to climb up a ladder as I hadn't received (or didn't read) the prompt telling me how to do it. The camera was being a complete bitch at the time too. I still don't understand why they can't get the camera right. Seems pretty decent so far though and I've hopes that this'll be the one that I actually get into.

Well another day another glorious GTA sssion ahead, dropped the Mrs off at work and have just settled mysefl down. Watched some of the "ingame" TV whilst having "real" breakfast (love the LCPD add "Create your own car chases... Be a Hero!") ;) ...and then went for a nice stroll down the road to the internet cafe, taking a detour through the park and soaking in the atmosphere on the way... no other game has nailed the sense of "being there" quite like this.

God knows how longs its going to take me to complete Im already getting massively sidetracked, doing everything and anything but the missions, and im not even off the first island yet!

One other thing, are Hidden packages still in this? I though they had been replaced by the 200 pigeons (which are a bitch to find) but there is an achievement for "all hidden packages found".. anyone found one yet?

Poor chap!

Gota love the Police Computer. Great way to spruce up the vigilante missions. ;)

Re pidgeons, I've seen a couple but they can wait.

There's one above Vlads bar too

. Gonna have no problems doing what I did with previous GTA games with this version. Play through for the story and the fun then play through again attempting completion.

Not tried multiplayer yet, what's it like with randoms? A lot of the games sound like they're designed to play with friends, but I'm not great at knowing when I'm going to be on so that's usually hard for me to arrange.

Did the first few missions last night, tonight's just going to be about wandering round and exploring the area. As ever I'm daunted by how big it seems but I need to know the terrain.

I've got to say, all controls are explained with on screen messages, including hailing / riding a cab, several times. If you can't work it out it's because you aren't reading what you're told.

That's Bollocks. The message triggers aren't perfect so it's not always the user's fault if they haven't seen something. There have been a few moments where it's been a bit too hectic to be reading them too.

Right. I've just watched it.

PS3 is jaggy-heavy in comparison to 360.

CA-CHING ;)

They probably had their PS3 set to 1080-only and it forced the game to upscale. As has been remarked earlier, that (obviously) smooths out the blockiness of the lower res and does make it look less harsh, and certainly less jaggy, than either version at its native res...

well i started playing this on a 1080p projector (which resistance/motostorm etc look great upscaled on). i was very disappointed with just how jaggy this looks on the ps3. it looks nearly last gen in places. the cars are covered in them. assassins creed looks sooo much better than this.

lets face it, rockstar must have been paid alot of money to push the release date back and not reveal the PS3's problems. the magazines pushing Sony's PR shite is less than unacceptable.

i think i'm going to trade it for 360 version (my 360 developed RROD on sunday), and wait to play the best version.

It's not bollocks, it's in the top corner of the screen. People moaning because they didn't read what they are told. If you were too busy running around like a mad bastard that you missed it, then that's your problem. You only need to scroll back in 'Brief' on the pause screen, by the way, to find out what has recently popped up.

How to get into a cab as a passenger comes up on the screen every single time you approach a hailed cab. If you can't read a message on the screen, then I don't know what else they can do for you short of burning it into the back of your eyelids.
