But the stars being greyed out only happens when you're outside their area of effect, no?

No. You can lose them within the circle. If the stars are grey they can't see you and simply don't know where you are, and they will thus start to search the area.

I think you might still need to get out of the area to lose the stars, but you can lose their sight and knowledge of your whereabouts.

Ah cool, didn't know that. Been avoiding messing with them for the most part. So I can pretty much hide behind a crate until they go? I'm guessing with higher wanted levels they'll search harder.

Haha, absolutely excellent game. Played it for a short while in single player and then just had a blast online for an hour.

I joined a random cops and crooks game and started as a crook. We were all stood around for a few seconds and then legged it towards a van that had pulled up. About 5 feet away from the van a cop car came flying across the screen and wiped us all out.

I almost pissed myself laughing, after that I had some fun games and tried deathmatch. Ended up hunting one guy around the map for about 30 minutes, running him off the road and once I killed him he started to chase me.

This game is going to be incredible when playing against people from the forum.

Is there anyway to just search for people on your friends list and then join their game?

PS3 only renders at 640P, less animation and no AA

I think its been confirmed on here that it was hard to get this game running on PS3, now we can see what sacrifices had to be made.

Yeah, this has been discussed in some depth. Though the richer colour pallete & bolder lighting, smaller amount of pop-up & lack of visible dithering in comparison make it less simple. The 360 version is definitely crisper though and it clearly has less aliasing. Whether it's a question of making sacrifices or a recognition of different architecture and attempting to make the most of the strengths and weaknesses of each, I don't know. Certainly, most 360 - PS3 multi-platform releases are simply inferior on the Sony console (see: UEFA 2008 for a bit of a chuckle) whereas it's clear that this has advantages and disadvantages. More than anything else, I think Rockstar deserve credit for working around each console with such an ambitious game.

I just noticed something in IGN's review:

"The 360 has richer colors, but the PS3 has better anti-aliasing making it look a little cleaner."

Either the reviewer is blind (because the exact opposite is true) or they've simply gotten in a bit of a muddle there and typed them the wrong way round. Or they're just fucking stupid.

You can just look at your friends list on the normal menu (after pressing the big-ass X button in the middle of the pad), find someone who is playing GTA4 and has a little arrow next to their icon (meaning they are joinable), click on them and select the 'join session' option

Excellent, I'm new to this whole xbox live thing ;)

I'm done for tonight but I think I'll be trying to get online tomorrow.

To be honest, it beggars belief that anyone thought they'd look and run exactly the same. I don't think there's been a single incidence of that happening with a multi-format game shared between the two so far. The only shocking thing is that the PS3 version looks and runs better in some ways, whereas anyone with any sense - myself included - thought it would be a clean sweep against it a couple of weeks ago.

With all that graphics stuff, and the crashing and freezing, and the fact that it seems hardly any cunt can get online with the PS3 version, Chase should probably ask for a ban to save his blushes.

I'm half gutted that Murray didn't take that bet for £100, but then again he's a mate so I'd feel bad about that amount.

Really, this goes to show...why did everyone believe everything they head via press releases and in magazines? Magazines that had been made to review the game in closed, controlled test environments, and not had the chance to really sit down and check for themselves.

I only mentioned this about four hundred times.

I'm kind of surprised about this "Less animation" business. Was there further explanations on this?

Well I guess the PS3 version is doing "less" so it will run better?

But then you're saying the PS3 version runs better in some ways, but the 360 might have a better framerate?

All rather confusing.

Yeah. The PS3 version has a fair amount less pop-up (though if you don't look for that, it really shouldn't bother you a great deal on either format). The difference becomes more apparent the more you watch or play each version, as does the 360's superior anti-aliasing. The 360 version has a slightly better frame rate, but the notion that either is significantly better in this area is untrue as far as I'm concerned. The PS3 version has a colour set that appeals to me more (the 360 version looks a bit...clinical, a bit grey in comparison at times) and the lighting appears bolder and, dare I say, a shade more complex in places. Funnily enough, it would seem that the lower resolution more or less completely masks/removes the dithering seen in the 360 version.

I think that Rockstar have worked around the comparatively tricky PS3 architecture very well by utilising certain effects that aren't present in the somewhat tidier 360 version.

The shadows look nicer on the PS3 from what I've seen.

I sort of don't give a shit, of course.

Yeah! They're both fucking great. They just have slightly different flavours. I should be playing it right now, but I've told myself I can't go back to it until I've done the washing up.

They probably had their PS3 set to 1080-only and it forced the game to upscale. As has been remarked earlier, that (obviously) smooths out the blockiness of the lower res and does make it look less harsh, and certainly less jaggy, than either version at its native res (although still not as sharp as the 360 version if they want to be pedantic about it). In its native res the PS3 version is lower res than the 360, and that's quite clear. Forced to 1080, the PS3 version is very 'smooth' and loses the blockiness but lacks a little sharpness, as well as having some odd scaling effects.

But it's hard to know which posts are sadder, really: the ChaseLOL360 ones or the ChaseIsWrongLOLSony ones. This forum's turned into a right load of hyperbolic pseudo-technical shite, and this thread's brought out the best of it. Maybe the game itself underneath the tech isn't really the main attraction, eh?

Although... in that example video... the rear lights on that car look grotesque on the PS3 and wtf is going on with the bridge at about 1:16?? The frame rate seems better on the PS3 clips.

I still don't care, but it's quite interesting. Has everyone said all this already? I expect so.

Well your 360's and your PS3's do things a fair bit differently.

However its not a surprise, at all, that there are differences.

The game was delayed last year as the PS3 version was not anywhere near shippable. The 360 game was all-but finished. Not so the PS3.

So from October > March we can expect a turn-around which results in both games being identicle? Of course not. If you were to believe otherwise you are blinded.

I am surprised what a damn fine job they've done on the PS3 version, although I guess at a lower resolution you're always going to get a little bit back from somewhere.

You can actually just go to the multiplayer menu then friends when you're in a game and invite folks thataway... Saves shenanigans with the 360 menu.

Based on both SP and MP.

If there's noticable differences between the versions then I win.

If there's not, you win.

If it's kind of half and half we BOTH win.

£20 for me then!

To clarify the bet with Murray.

It's done.

Its wise to re-open.

Plus Chase won't be playing till next week so you guys can get some fair and balanced stuff in before that thread goes inter-stellar. One thing no one could imagine was all the crashing on the 360 version. Chase was right about the RROD though, motr than a few posts in this thread confirmed that.

I might dip my toe in after another single player session now the football has finished.

Maybe see some people online around midnight...

How naive of me. Just finished another single player session, still not been online.

30 hours, 50% and there's still so much I feel I'm not doing. Crazy times. Liberty City, I love you.

I've done a lot of story mode today, but the fact that Rockstar's online PS3 servers seem to have been down all day kinda sucks. I want to shoot Soong! ;)

Who did they get to host the servers again, gamespy?

How do you do that spinning backwards kick whilst fighting? I've managed it a couple of times by fluke but can't seem to do it on purpose.

It's so cool too!

the ps3 doesnt upscale

Well the game definitely has less jaggies and is smoother in 1920x1080.
