GTA:IV Official Thread

Just got drunk. Very, very good stuff, then got into a windmilling brawl with a cabbie and my date stood me up. ;)

As everyone said, the game is such a good videogame alternate take on reality I find myself driving safely and not abusing the populace, and I just like walking to locations it's that good. The lighting model is sublime, the whole city takes on a different mood. Game is better than I imagined possible.

damn right. Loved my 4 hrs or so on it today

Seems a few people have posted the same thing on here. A lot of the sites that have said the opposite clearly don't know their AA from their arseoles ;)

can you flag down cabs, without turfing out the driver so you are the passenger?

Haven't tried 'em, but I read that there are a couple of 4 player co-op missions you can play online. Not many, and nothing to do with the main game I believe, mainly just big arse shoot-outs.

Yeah, I tried playing the escape from the airport one (which was OK, but every time we played it was identical) and the 'Bomb da Base' one which would have been ace if we weren't playing with randoms who didn't really understand the game.

after buying into the hype of this thread, i've got to say i'm a bit disappointed. the graphics (on PS3 anyway) look lo -rez and full of jaggies (i'm guessing its not 720p) and as i result doesn't look a million miles away from the previous gen of these games. and i am not sure why everyone is finding the world so detailed? what exactly are you all doing in it? to my mind its just more of the same.

i was never a massive GTA fan, always finding the task too repetative and controls too frustrating. GTA4 looks like its going the same route. i hoped this one would be something more.

edge 7.

Try playing one of the older games again and the differences will be much, much more noticeable.

The new game does have something of a 'low res' quality on both formats (the 360 version is, as far as we know, true 720p though with the PS3 version possibly slightly below...and there's no point in me going into the differences again, though needless to say it's a question of preference) but honestly, there is shitloads of detail in there.

I kind of thought the same at first, but if you actualy go back and play the PS2 gtas they look so fucking shit compared to GTA4. Aside from the framerate (which i'm more than used to now) the game looks superb.

I've been playing though the missions a bit tonight, i'm really getting into the story, and I really like Niko. I think Michelle hates Niko though ;)

I'm still in what must be the tutorial type missions and I'm getting bored now. Give me something proper to do *stamps feet* I still can't drive the cars properly either, the police chases are frustrating the hell out of me because of it.

Unless you do the handbrake tricks people are mentioning (I don't) you have to drive properly. Forget past GTAs where you could tear around at full pelt much of the time. Brake before a corner and not as you turn, basically.

Got a few hours in this evening. It's pretty good - I didn't like Vice City much, but the controls seem a lot tighter in this one, some of the scenery is stunning, and it's very well put together.

Can't help feeling a tad underwhelmed though.. the actual gameplay seems a bit pedestrian. Although I just did a mission involving a chase across some rooftops which was a bit more interesting, it's mainly been drive somewhere, shoot/stab/punch/throw a brick, rinse, repeat. Not exactly BEST GAME EVER material really. I'm hoping the mission structure will open up a bit as the game progresses.

And Michelle put out pretty quickly. Slag.

Im having a little trouble with the taxi, I keep stealing them then I just want to ride as a passenger?

How do you hail them down?

On a more serious note. I was a bit dissapointed after my first hour of play but it's picked up since then now im warming to the 'heavier' controls and camera.

To ride instead of steal you have to hold down Y, not just tap it. I stole one by accident myself as it can be tricky. To flag one down I think you have to see one near you then press LB (bumper), and it will pull over for you.

Great multiplayer games earlier btw, even though we were all a bit lost in the Cops n Robbers ones ;)

Tried some Hangman's Noose afterwards too - it's pretty cool, like Heat, it's a shame you can't have more than 4 people and we couldn't make it so you have more than 4 lives. It was still great fun. Need to use the cover system more it seems.

A lot of the time when i come out of cutscenes niko keeps walking forwards without me touching the stick, then once i take control of him and let go he'll stand still again.

Does this happen to anyone else or is my pad just fucked?

Niko 'circles' for me after cutscenes.

I bought a new pad today. My old pad has a thing where if you push the left thumbstick left then centre it, it doesn't go dead, it's still left slightly. Most games it didn't matter, but for this it was a nightmare.

Aggggh its great. I want to play multi right now, but am taking that sensible route that other people are taking of getting to know Liberty City, its cars, its little treats, before I go online and have it all ruined.

I'm surprised so many people are asking things in here like 'How do I flag down a cab and just ride in it?'. It was a 'feature' that was mentioned a lot, so people know you can do it and want to try it out and just watch the city go by, but come on, within a few missions you are explicitly told how to do it.

Patience! Have a little.

... But I want to go online, right now. I'm such a hypocrite.

MUST SLEEP, tomorrow night will be all out GTA fest until the wee hours. Woo!

It is imperative you expand. I've been playing online for like five hours and haven't taken one corner smoothly yet.

Oh, and my 360 version crashed when I first tried on clothes. Ho hum.

And the cop didnt spot me. ive done this several tmes now to experiment with the AI. if you're in that red circle then every officer in that circle knows exactly where you are no matter where you hide. Even if you change cars.

Might be reading this thead a bit late, but that's simply not true. Many times I have hidden inside the circle and not been discovered by anyone. If you are still in view of the cops when you make a move into cover then obviously they saw you. If you weren't in view (your stars being greyed out) when you hide then they'll lose you and conduct a search.

In other news, this is fantastic. The hand-to-hand combat is appalling but can be completely avoided forever after the first couple of fights. Everything else is tremendous. Fuck yes.

This post from earlier:

I always use the handbreak, but just gently tap it for the most part. Use it early and turn way before you'd expect, and you should spin around at 90 degrees, lined up perfectly for the corner. Takes some practice, and you should probably still slow down a *little* beforehand, but it's fab once mastered.

Not tried it yet. If it means you effectively play the game like Driver, that's excellent.

But the stars being greyed out only happens when you're outside their area of effect, no? The point is that when you're in that area, it doesn't matter if the police can see you or not, there's no way you can lose the stars.
