The Wii Launch...?

squirtle

Recommended Posts

With the PS3 behemoth rolling into town this November, what about the Wii launch? I'm sure Nintendo have their dates set in stone behind closed doors, but what do we reckon is gonna be the best strategy for the Wii when it's gets released?

We know that it won't be worldwide simultaneous. Do we think there will be a big gap, a la the Cube, from Japanese launch to European launch?

If not, when would be the best time to launch? Is November out of the question because of the PS3? If so, what does that leave? Considering they've said we will be playing the Wii this Xmas, do we think that means the whole world, Japan and the Us, or just Japan? If they ain't going worldwide, are we looking at something like September in Japan, October in the US and... December in Europe?

What do ya think? Do they go up against the launch of the PS3 directly, an aggressive, low price point and hope the Wii's difference and launch games will be enough to carry it through? Or do they come out before the PS3 or wait until 2007?

I'm not sure what will be best for the Wii personally?

What do you reckon?

They'll nail Japan though, but I can't see them doing well in USA or Europe if those figures are really true.

You know, I could even see the Wii winning the war, especially if it catches the imagination of eveyone..

Do we know it's not going to be a worldwide launch? What do you consider to be simultaneous? Same day? A week or two apart?

I think with both Sony and Microsoft launching in the major regions within the space of a few weeks, Nintendo wont want to alienate a major market by making them wait months. I think it will be a Japan, US and then Euro release within 2-3 weeks of each other.

I think the Wii wil launch before the PS3 so that they have consoles ready on shelves when the inevitable PS3 shortage hits. Launching before the PS3 will give them a chance of some press before the headlines are constantly about there being no PS3s in the shops.

I think they should go head-to-head with the PS3 in terms of launch dates. I do think that they'll try and launch in Japan & North America by the end of this year, but I'd bet that Europe won't see it till 2007.

I really hope they manage a head to head launch with ps3; hopefully we'll see a lot of casuals returning ps3s' when they realise there's nothing to play on it and going for that cool looking little one with the magic wand. It would also help if Nintendo actually spent some money marketing the damn thing. No, not just sponsering channel 4 comedy; I want to see billboards, news adverts, demo pods everywhere! And they really, really need to get people thinking of it as "we" instead of "wee", focus on the multiplayer. Nobodys going to buy the nintendo piss.

A head to head would be exciting, and the true decider I mean we all know the 360 isn't going to be number one now I mean its been out ages and still hasn't made an impact whatsoever so an aggressive HEAD TO HEAD BATTLE would be great.

March 2007 for Europe. Why expect anything else?

People got over the name weeks ago. Well, people on forums at least, and they're the difficult to please idiots who take gaming far too seriously in the first place, so it'll probably be even quicker for the general public.

we accepted the name, accepted that it was shit but wasn't going to be changed so have gotten on with things.

I like the name. It's pretty.

Because they said that it would be a worldwide launch, which they definied as releasing in all three regions within 12 weeks. If it's out in Japan in early November, then the latest they could launch if they stick by that promise (which, to be fair, they could easily not do) would be January. I think after the simulataneous 360 and PS3 launches, plus the short delay for the DS Lite, it's almost certain it'll be out here before Christmas.

I like the name. It's funny.

Fixed. The name is just as fun as they want the console to be.

And I'll import a Wii if it doesn't come out for the end of the year, and there's a fair chance for that, although I don't think it's a March launch like Nintendo likes to do mostly (for example the DS and some big games like Metroid Prime and the Wind Waker). A Q4 2006 release in the US is 100% certain however, but NoE isn't the most kind division of Nintendo so far.

I'd love to see what marketing campaign they come up with for Europe and the US.

If they don't take it too seriously, I reckon people could get over the name straight away.

I'm sure whatever they do in Japan will be fine.

 Ah, you crazy guys...

Seriously though, they're saying "no simaltaneous launch", and they've not confirmed any launch info, so I'm guessing... Japan August, US November, Europe March 07. 'Cause I'm such a die-hard optimist, like.

I cant help but feel that the Wii will end up like the Gamecube in terms of floor space. On the other hand, if it catches the imagination of everyone it deserves then maybe more space will be devoted to it.

I just hope Game take down the rediculous amout of shelf space devoted to 2nd hand PS2 games, as it's getting rediculous. The Game in Belfast is like this: 360 stuff at the front right, PSP front left, PS2 middle left to back. XBox Middle to a few rows from the back. PC few rows and back, DS and GBM one shelf each. Nothing for the Cube at all.

Sadly retailers are going to back the consoles that little Johnny and his mum and dad will buy (PS3) and the Wii will be relegated to the back of the shop. They've not even started promoting the DSLite yet

Retailers in catering for the mainstream which will make the most money shocker

Shhhh....the Wii is ''quirky'' and will be a massive success! Hardly anyone's going to buy one of these so-called ''playstation threes''.

Who cares about the European launch. Seriously. Who in their right fucking mind is bonkers enough to even consider getting a PAL unit after NOE's franky appaling track record???

Jap?US all the way.

ANyone who buys a PAL unit is a right loon!

imho.

My only worry here is that the online stuff will cause issues. In hindsight US was the only way to go for the Cube. This gen could be a little more tricky though.

It hasn't caused issues with other online consoles.

Regarding launching with the PS3 coming it's not likely to be a huge problem as getting a PS3 this side of Xmas is only going to happen with a pre-order. ie To those that have already decided that they are getting a PS3 anyway.

If Nintendo can supply plenty more stock than Sony then perhaps, just perhaps, when people cant get a hold of a PS3 they might pick up a Wii.

I just hope there's enough time between the two for Wii to create some column inches of it's own.

We won't, but the Nintendogs/Animal Crossing/Brain Training buying public will.

I'm worried about the online stuff being fucked up if I buy a US one, but you can always sell it on if it is.

Only if you buy UK games.

Always buy US games and you won't have a worry in the world.

Why not?

Nintendo could quite easily establish that you're running a US Wii from the UK. Not sure if they'd bother to do anything with that fact, but they could easily check.
