Superman Returns with $21M on Day One

Source: ShowBIZ Data

June 29, 2006

Warner Bros. Pictures' Superman Returns, directed by Bryan Singer, opened with $21 million on Wednesday. The figure, which includes early Tuesday night screenings, marks the 8th biggest opening for a Wednesday, just behind last year's War of the Worlds, which collected $21.3 million before moving on to earn $121.2 million its first seven days.

"Superman" has a slight advantage over the Steven Spielberg film, however, as next Tuesday is the Fourth of July and more people will be able to head to theaters. Of course, that doesn't necessarily mean it will earn more over the seven days. Singer's film debuted in 3,915 theaters and will expand to 4,064 theaters on Friday, the fourth-widest release ever.

Spider-Man 2 holds the record for a Wednesday opener. The Sam Raimi sequel made $40.4 million on June 30, 2004.

Yeah he is.

Very Hackman like, but with a big bit of Spacey thrown in.

I may go see it again tonight :D

So he's a comedy Luthor then?

Damn. :D

I was hoping for a more Justice League Unlimited take on the character because I always found Hackman's Luthor to be a bumbling, self-aggrandising dolt. I was watching Superman 2 and it's embarrassing to watch the indignities they heap upon him: he's less of a criminal genius more a Wile E Coyote.

He is more like the comics and the Justice League.

It's just that he has the bearing that Luthor had but without the maniacal madness.

You can tell he is plotting constantly and that he hates no one more than Superman.

He reminds me of the Luthor from about Superman from five years ago. The one who became President and who was willing to give up his daughter for more power. He's that kind of mad.

He isn't bumbling. Far from it. Spacey's Luthor is more concentrated evil, but hidden away. But he does have a few moments with Posey which are reminiscent of Hackman.

If you want a full review that I can write one...in spoiler mode.

I have no credit card to buy tickets for London IMAX, and I don't know how many of my friends want to/can go to even place an order, but I'm hoping the first Friday showing won't be too packed since most people will be at work or school.

It sucks we have to wait 2 more weeks then people in the US.

Saw this last night in IMAX, the cinema here is playing it for 3 days only. Seeing it on IMAX is the way to go though, the 3D bits are truly stunning but there are only about 4 scenes in the film that use the effects, I ended up leaving the cinema wishing the whole film was in 3D. Whilst watching those bits I just couldnt help but keep thinking how great the Star Wars films are going to be when they are re-released in 3D.

The film itself is pretty good but not as good as Batman Begins, but far better than X3. Kevin Spacey steals the show and Brandon Routh does a good job as Supes, the new Lois Lane is the one weak point as she doesnt seem all that strong (even though she gets thrown about alot in the film), not much chemistry between her and Routh and seems to be in the film just for eye candy. But just hearing John William's Superman theme again in the cinema was enough to give me goosebumps, as well as seeing Marlon Brando again in the film (which fis perfectly well in the film).

But for me the highlight of the film was the 3D parts and I think it will be very difficult to go back and watch the film normally. Ive seen 3D before (shrek 3D and a couple of IMAX films) but never in a big theatrical movie, its amazing and could very well be the future of cinema like Lucas and Cameron keep saying.

That would be your best bet. But saying that, IMAX is always usually pretty busy. I've checked the seating for the later screenings on the friday and their pretty shitty. Me and my friends have got tickets for the 11pm screening which should be good :)

It's taken a bit of a drop over the last couple of days box office-wise. It's still doing well and it'll have a massive weekend - though the numbers are a bit thrown because Tuesday is July 4th, with many people taking off the 3rd as well which essentially gives the movie a 5 day weekend to play with. This means that day to day numbers might be lower because people know they have two free days to go and see Superman - no rush to see it over the weekend.

So far the movie has taken $50M including Friday and should clear another $30M for Saturday/ Sunday. It should see $100M by the end of the 5 day weekend.

Thats kinda shit though.

Even James Cameron's Aquaman did more than that.
