Oblivion - 95% rubbish, 5% spectacular

Laughable. Thats what Id call this game.

Bloody glad I didnt get a 360 for it.

I realise at only a couple of hours in Ive yet to see any of the things that people say makes the game really good, but you see Ive just had to endure 2 hours of what I thought (and now know) makes the game really bad.

Factoring in that its an open world and there are loads of quests and it feels like a real world and everything, Im beginning to think an 8 from Edge was actually rather generous.

I suppose I could have got a 360 for something else and just happened to have picked up Oblivion...but no, I don't have a 360 yet (I will be getting one at some point, though now Ive played Oblivion it might be a bit further away).

Its too slow and fiddly in general.

Im out of the sewers travelled through the city and across some of the landscape and seen the sun rise, Ive been in a tavern (full of NPCs randomly walking all over the place).

I find it laughable that a game like this could be considered to be so good, its just completely the opposite of what I think makes a good game.

More does not equal better.

For a game to be truely great it has to be extremely polished in all areas, by its very nature something like Oblivion almost certainly cant be (and definately isnt).

Im not saying I think the game is totally bad or anything, for me at the moment it doesnt look like the good will be able to outweigh the bad, but even thats not to say I think the game is bad.

The 'nature' of Morrowind games is that it bites off more than it can chew, theres no way it could have been polished enough to be a truely great game in my eyes. The fact is (as far as I see it) its so unpolished that its laughable.

The open-ended RPG genre doesn't have anything intrinsic to itself that would lead me to like a game in the genre, or put more simply, the bad bits generally outweigh the good bits and Oblivion is a prime example of that.

As for the AI, in combat Ive seen enemies unaware of my presence when Im fighting another guy about 4 metres in front of their face and in the city in a tavern Ive seen 4 or 5 people wandering around in circles clambering across tables for no apparent purpose. Both examples within the first two hours. That is pretty poor as far as Im concerned.

As for the controls, the control mechanism of an FPS is more than just mouse and keyboard, or dual analogue sticks, some are just better implemented than others. It also doesnt help that its not a particularly fun mechanism of control anyway. In a standard FPS you are always shooting or waiting to shoot something, there are very few I can think of that require you to traverse landscapes for any significant length of time without doing anything else (and yes I know there are lots of things to do in the landscape, thats not what Im talking about).

Anyway its a combination of those two things, to me that makes the mechanism pretty dull, even if there is lots of different content, it is all linked with this mechanism.

I'll put a few more hours in tomorrow, but if I don't start seeing some incredible stuff pretty soon I think I might just go play something else (like Odama).

So developers should never try then? I am guessing you are some kind of joke account judging by your posting history. If not, why not tell us what you do like?

edit: talking of polish - you should apply that to your spelling

Eh? You said 95% of it was bad.

I don't really understand this. What would be a better way of control? What about all the quests and exploration you do when not fighting?

Please I want to understand you arguments but I cannot.

So you say the game is laughable and then go on to state that you don't like games that try lots of things and don't quite manage them all perfectly. You make no sense, go back to the arcades as it's clearly more your sort of thing and leave us be. That or form a decent argument of what makes it a bad game. Making a point of 0.0001% of a games content and saying its bad is just plain missing the point.

I fail to see how anyone could form a strong opinion of this game based on anything less than at least 15-20 hours play.

Well, i was un impressed for 5hours or so, then I had 5 good hours and came away with a decent opinion of it. (its just going to need more time then i have to give it to get the most of it)

but its blatantly clear this random geezer has simply not got a clue, as he clearly hasnt done anything of any value whatsoever
