Im loving the game so far.. lacks the ability to actualy view game highlights (unles im missing something) but apart from that its a faithfull reproduction of the PC game.. navigation is simple and intuitive..

More as I play a bit more..

More info please!

I'm just getting into FM2006, and i'm off on holiday soon. I have nothing planned other than sitting drunk on a beach, so i need a game or two to kep me occupied.

Is it too stripped back, missing features and generally a bit wank?

Or is it as brilliant as I hope?

Have they got rid of the 2D pitch?

Yeah the 2d match view was taken out so it could be commentary only. For some reason.

Hmm, intrigued now. I hate the 2D pitch. Not realy sure I can afford a PSP though. Must check some reviews of this out.

Out of interest why do you not like the pitch?

Weeeeell, I haven't played 2006 so don't know if its improved since then, but just thought it was too far removed from real life football. The text commentary leaves more to the imagination, with the 2D pitch, you can see all the faults in the engine more easily.

I think I'm also a little predjudice because I didn't like FM in general, the balance was just a bit off. The first save I had was with Chelsea; it was a close title race until the last few games in which we beat Arsenal 6-1 and 6-0 and Man U beat Arsenal 6-4. When we beat them the first time I was pretty happy about it, and the other crazy results just completely took all the happiness and magic out of it. I've never really played it since, but I've had conversations with people about how their teams are winning 8-0 and so forth. Just not right.

01/02 remains the best version for me. The balance was spot on. Kind of why this interests me I suppose, it looks like it could be like 01/02.

Right ok.. I have no idea if it is "out there".. this is a promo copy (review coming soon ;) )

They have removed the 2d pitch.. commentary only...

im quite dissapointed at the lack of custom tactics (i.e. you can't move the players around the pitch and choose where they run) but apart from that its pretty much spot on to the PC version.. some slight changes to make it work with the controls and the smaller screen, but it does work.

The controls COULD be more intuitive.. but I think they have done well considering the limitations of the hardware.

its kind of inbetween.. apart from one glaring omission (see above) its exactly how I expected it to be.

Whoa. Hold on a second.

Are you saying that all we get to do with formations is pick a pre-set one, instead of using our players as we see fit and asking our right back to make crazy dashes to the midfield whenever I feel like it?

I can't see how the individual player instructions can compensate for that. A massive part of the CM3 series appeal was the flexibility in the tactics allowing you to get teams playing the way you want. If that's missing, are we limited to a buy/sell approach to management with a tiny amount of tweaking?

I havnt got a manual for the game, so I have no idea if I'm just missing something somewhere, perhaps I can create a tactic and save it for use in the game screen, but there doesnt seem to be any way of doing it "on the fly" so to speak.

I'm going to explore more and see if I can get anywhere.. it does seem to be a massive missing element, but It doesnt detract from the gameplay that much.

You can't choose where they run??!! Wow, that's big. You could do that in Champ since forever...

The pre-set tactics still have runners, but im yet to figure out how to make them run wherever I choose.

I really wish I hadnt mentioned this now!! I don't want to put people off the game.. ITS GOOD!!

Anyway, I've been over on the SI forums and they confirmed you can't make the changes yourself. The reason being that they thought they couldn't make it intuitive enough. Pah, if PES can do it on a pad well enough, they can.

That's what THEY thought? Blimey...

You can't use players as part-exchange in transfers either. This game becomes massively less appealling every time I read more about it.

Hey it's SI/FM it's going to be held up as a shining beacon of football amazingness/realism.

But if strikers can score and playing an Old Firm game as with 10 players at right back and a goalkeeper doesn't result in a 1-0 win, it's instantly a better game than CM for the PSP.

I nearly cried over how good that game nearly was. There really was little else to complain about (other than niggles like strange transfer fees, but that doesn't really hinder gameplay too much).

I know, but I've been dying for a playable handheld football management game since I first got a GameBoy.

I've played through so much turgid tripe in that time. Games with prescripted events similar to Premier Manager 98 on the PlayStation, games with a horrible lack of depth limiting you to five formations and not much in the way of options, games with strange bugs where promotion is achieved by relegating all the teams from the top flight to your division (Total Soccer Manager for the GBA), games that refuse to offer any more than two divisions to manage in, thus giving me no chance of playing a long lower league career, and then finally CM which could have been great if only the match engine wasn't ballsed spectacularly. Oh, and the 10 season limit is annoying before you've even started.

This is the last hope. I've had to content myself with playing Soccer Boss on a Speccy emulator on the GBA because despite its huge shortcomings and lack of any depth whatsoever I get the benefit of nostalgia.

All I really ask for is an addictive game, with enough options to keep me engrossed (the lack of custom formations is very frustrating here so I can only hope it makes up for it elsewhere) and doesn't piss me off with a match engine from Hades.

On paper, the level of depth of CM01/02 with the presentation of FM is a great thing. But once I heard about the lack of custom formations and part exchanges, the doubt seeps in and I just want to hold on to the dream. Given that I rarely tweak formations after settling on one at the start, I might just get by. But what if there's more?
