Games you thought you'd like and you didn't

Panzer Dragoon Orta was really astonishingly bad. The graphics are the only motivation to keep playing, and great though they are it just hurts. Complete borefest.

Beyond G&E too. Uber generic nonsense. Really don't understand why games forum types seem to lap this one up at all.

I was also of the "Sonic Heroes can't be that bad, can it?" camp, only to be completely amazed by that as well. Stinker.

There was also Skies of Arcadia. Great setting, but the battles combined with the DCs loading squirms result in so much pain. You can actually do something else entirely in the time a ship battle can take.

Almost every game listed in this thread (with the exception of Sonic Heroes/FFXI/JFG) is something I hold up as an example of why I still play games. To each their own, I guess.

Anyway, my vote goes to Half Life 2 on the PC. Thought this would be awesome...nope. Got bored of the whole Waterway Canal navigation bit after 20 minutes. Lost all interest in continuing...probably never will. No great loss.

Jade Empire. KOTOR 1 is still one of my fave games, but this had awful 'action' combat and crushingly binary, unexciting conversational options. Gave up after just a few hours.

You've described KotOR exactly as I see it. Except I played until the end. *Sigh*

Resident Evil on the gamecube.

The graphics were fucking lovley, but i found the game horribly boring and tedious. And the zombies really pissed of. They never died and they just followed you round everywere ahhhh. Ive never really like the "run round looking for things" genre tbh

oh yeah, and the controlles were awful beyond belief O__o

Tony Hawk's American Wasteland. I absolutely love the TH games, I even like THUG 1 & 2, but this one just leaves me cold. The classic mode is okayish but the big 'Skate Anywhere!' story mode is just plain rubbish. It also suffers because they seem to have chucked in way to much stuff now, I generally like the additions they have made to the gameplay over the years, flat tricks, wall plants, slow mode etc but it's massively unbalanced and confusing now. It's stupidly easy to get massive scores without really knowing what you are doing. They should chuck out all the off board shit and the story modes and go back to basics.

F-Zero for GC - Really bought due to RLLMUK recommendations and it was cheap, to be honest just haven’t played it very much. Looked lovely but the controls felt to lightweight.

:D

You really need to give that a second chance. One of my favourite games on the gamecube.

Super Monkey Ball – I love puzzle games but I couldn’t get unto this. I never felt in control of the monkey.

I'm glad to find that I'm not the only one that had a less-than-positive opinion about Super Monkey Ball , especially as it seemed to me that for the longest time I was the only one who was supremely disappointed by AV's effort. I had a much different idea about what the game was about when it was first announced, particularly as it seemed to be very similar (from early accounts) to Koro koro kâbî/Kirby's Tilt 'n' Tumble (GBC), a game I absolutely adored. Essentially, the upcoming Super Monkey Ball Adventure is what I expected the game to be originally, but I was ready to accept a charming action-puzzle game built upon arcade-like design principles --especially after the excellent word of mouth the game received in the old Edge forum and the reviews of the game.

Super Monkey Ball, however, ended up being one of the least enjoyable games I've ever played. I was already aware of the fact that you controlled the game area and not the ape him- or her-self, so there was nothing in regards to movement that I really objected to, but I quickly became very annoyed by the game structure itself, and the graphic style turned out to be utterly charmless. I'm still non-plussed about the decision to base such a modern-looking game on rather primitive design tenets, which, in a really cruel manner, gave you permission to use continues only after you had played and re-played the game enough times to become sick of the game. (I hold special rancor for the pause that the game forced upon you when you lost your last life, with the irritating ape squeals, and which barred you from skipping the replay of your failure.) I'm currently playing F-Zero GX at the moment, and I'm equally unimpressed about the laborious, sadistic system of unlocking machines, events, and parts for the garage in the game.

And don't get me started on the minigames, which were raved about as perfect party fodder. (And which turned out to be nothing but soul-less, plain affairs that held little interest for me. I thought "Monkey Bowling" was the most amusing of the lot --and that's saying something.) In particular, the experience of playing "Monkey Target" in four-player mode reminds me of the recent experience I had while watching the remake of The Pink Panther (the one starring and co-written by Steve Martin): everybody else but me seemed to be laughing and having a great time, and I was left in the corner, utterly clueless as to where the other people where obtaining their fun. Which is very much my overall experience of the game: in the end, I just forced myself to complete the game in the "Expert" setting, and have never touched the game again.

Ninja Gaiden - Was all hyped up about this, then found it was an absolute bastard to play. I'd keep at it, if I didn't have to play for so long to get back to the bit where I died.

Super Monkey Ball - Fun isn't the word that I'd use to describe it. To be fair it sounded fun, the whole concept; just didn't play that way.

PN03. I badly wanted to love this game, but when it became immediately obvious that it relied on rote memorisation of enemy positions and attack patterns I couldn't take it anymore.

Fahrenheit: Deceived to flatter. Wowed me at first, thought it was actually pushing the adventure genre forwards, then it takes several steps backwards with its QT bullshit, absurd plotting and increasingly poor design.

Broken Sword 3. Was gutted by how this turned out. Never thought I could hate a BS game so much, being a huge fan of the first.

Zelda OOT: Was so looking forward to playing this, knowing how many people rated it as their favourite game ever and how it had a great camera and combat and puzzles... blah de blah. Two words: fucking dungeons. I wouldn't mind if they were different but it was the same dull floor by floor repetition and super glowing target bosses again and again. Fell for the same shit all over again with LTTP and WW.

FF7 - Dull. Dull. Dull.

Fucking thank god someone else said it. I hated this game and never got the fanboy hype. I liked 8 a shitload better, and it was gay as hell too. Anyone I tell how much I hate FF7 to, they look at me like I just buttfucked jesus or something

For those who think Rez is all looks and not an enjoyable exoerience...

1. Drop a couple of pills (Optional as I've had the same effect without).

2. Play in a dark room.

3. Put some decent headphones on.

4. Turn it up REALLY FUCKING LOUD.

5. Play from Zone 1-5 without stopping.

5. Try not to have a heart attack when you hit the groove and you're absolutely sucked in... colours and sounds really, REALLY pulling off that synaesthesia claim.

After that experience, EVERY time you play it will be the best gaming experience ever.

For me it's GTA:SA.

It's not that I don't like it, the actual game is solidly made and I love exploring the area, it's just that I'm just a bit bored at the moment. I came from VC where I had all the cars and all the weapons and I'm really struggling to be bothered to play past what seem like very simplistic dull beginging missions and get all the cool stuff. Maybe I'm just impatient but I'm really finding the begginging of the game hard going. Plus I'm really not fond of the almost RPG level of upgrading and other rubbish. I don't want to have to go to the gym or eat, or do any RPG stuff, if I wanted to do that I'd play an RPG. I want a fun action game I can play in short bursts and have a laugh with and so far SA just has not gripped me in the same way VC did:(

This thread is now akin to that bit where the Ark of the Covenant is opened in Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Should've let sleeping dogs lie, Spew.

We are all different - and that is special and that is what unites us all.

Will

PS: anyone who says FFVII is boring should be shot, quartered, strung up on the tower and no questions should be asked- all as a warning to others.

Reasoning, Geoff?

Finding keys to unlock doors block pushing puzzles, lava levels etcetera.

The same old set-up, the same old tutorials, the same old twists. If there's one thing that you can depend on in this game for, it's the length. It's a bit shorter than the other Zelda titles, and the over world is quite smaller

Even The Minish Cap's principal hook of allowing Link to shrink to a miniature size doesn't feel particularly new or unexpected; being as it is just another predictable riff on the Light World/Dark World, Young Link/Old Link dual mechanics of the series' most lauded high watermarks (A Link to the Past, Ocarina of Time ).

The thing is, I know all this and I’ve seen it all before. As such, the experience of the game was predictable, mechanical and often plain dull, with a limited sense of adventure that felt rigid and stifling throughout.

I'm struggling as I tend to avoid games I'm sure I won't like, and the "chancey" games that could go either way I usually enjoy. Yet I'll still name two games that go halfway towards the "dislike" part.

Fable is one. I liked the idea (even of the finished product) and I did enjoy playing it, but I eventually reached a point where I was just so bored with it. The combat just wasn't fun enough, which just left wandering around taking in the admittedly nice scenery and partaking in a nothing plot. Ho hum. I'll go back to it at some point as it's possible I just needed a break. The accents were excellent, though, and made a real change from US ones. It was like playing Knightmare without the good bits.

Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow should have been fun as I adore stealth, but it eventually reached a point where I just couldn't play without getting frustrated. I'd get spotted, or I'd raise an alarm out of nowhere, or any of a multitude of other things would happen that I just couldn't be arsed coping with. Pah.
