We're getting an online demo next week. :P

Atari today announced that an exclusive demo for the highly anticipated racing game, Test Drive Unlimited, will be made available to users of the Xbox 360™ video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, via the Xbox Live® Marketplace. The demo will be available to download from 8 May until 14 May 2006 as part of Microsoft’s plans to bring gamers closer to the E3 experience and offer of free Xbox Live Gold membership for the week.

The demo grants players an exclusive chance to get behind the wheel of Test Drive Unlimited and sample some of its online and offline challenges along 40 miles of Oahu’s beautiful open roads. To add a bit of spice, players will be able to replay all of the challenges as many times as they wish in order to shave valuable seconds off their time-challenge records, or set about thrashing either human or AI competition in the races before heading to www.testdriveunlimited.com to view their global ranking.

As a way of letting players find out for themselves what a Massively Open Online Racing game is, the Test Drive Unlimited demo will allow players to set up as many instant challenges as they wish. Players driving along the road can challenge other players to a one-on-one race, define their own start and end points for the race, and power through the lush Hawaiian scenery at break-neck speeds.

With a choice between the Ford Shelby GT500, Lotus Exige and Lamborghini Gallardo, a luxury-laden Lamborghini dealership to visit, and a beautiful house for each player who logs in, the demo offers players a mouth-watering taste of Eden Games’ forthcoming automotive masterpiece.

Test Drive Unlimited is racing reinvented. For more information and to view global demo rankings visit www.testdriveunlimited.com.

Does anyone know if the the gameworld is populated by other AI controlled cars? You know, the sort whose sole purpose is to create a bit of traffic on the roads and generally get in the way. Or is it all just fellow online players? I rather liked the surreal emptiness of PGR2's cities. It's similar to all those arty car porn shots you get on Top Gear when the presenters burn their way across Europe. Just you, your very expensive car and some gorgeous scenery.

PS2 and PSP versions confirmed, being done by the Transformers guys!

http://www.xboxic.com/news/849

Currently in development by Atari’s Melbourne House studio, the versions of Test Drive Unlimited for PS2® and PSP™ retain most of the core gameplay features of the Xbox 360 and PC games, including seemingly endless miles of streaming Hawaiian roads, server-based online play, over 70 luxury supercars rendered in painstaking detail, solo challenges, player-created races, car upgrades and downloadable content. The version for PSP is one of the first ever genuinely online games for the console, making impressive use of Wireless and stepping way beyond simple LAN gaming. In addition, enhancements have been made to the single player game with an Arcade Race mode for snack-sized play.

I pre-ordered a 360 because I liked the look of this game.

When it was delayed, and I was told the 360 wouldn't be available until Feb, I cancelled my order.

Now it's announced for the PC, I really can't see much point in bothering with a Microsoft console.

We're going to watch the 360 become the PC's poor cousin over time, aren't we?

It's a transitional console.

A snack between PlayStations.

It's in the exact same position that the Dreamcast was with third parties - nobody wants to commit until the market leader makes their move or consumers buy into it big-time. So it becomes the home of easy PlayStation and PC ports until the market leader launches and the generation begins proper.

If Xbox 360 had managed to completely kill off the PS2 like the PS1 did with the SNES, you'd undoubtedly be seeing far more in the way of exclusive games.

If anything (based on another kind of blinkered, moronic "logic") the PC is fast becoming the home of Xbox 360 ports.

And you seem to have no idea how many 360 games are going to be shown at E3. Poor post, Burai. Really poor.

I know exactly what's being shown at E3 and it's Dreamcast all over again.

"But we've got MSR, Jet Set Radio and Shenmue! These are amazing games! How can the Dreamcast fail?"

There will be plenty of Xbox 360 games at E3, simply because they are PS3 games as well.

You do realise that Sega had barely a quid in their pocket, right?

Leave it out Phil, shouldn't you be getting ready to make countless things irrelevant in your big speech.

I agree with Burai; it's this generation's DC.

That doesn't make it any less valid as a console.

I suppose if the PS3 disappoints initially (say over its first year,) the 360's position might end up stronger than I expect it to.

To Mr Spew: me and Burai are speculating, who knows quite what the next 18 months will bring, but quality of product is little guarantee in today's image defined market.

The DreamCast was a clear forewarning of a good product receiving a poor reception; after all, the PS2 was coming.

I wasn't aware the 360 had received a poor reception.

That doesn't sound like speculation to me.

WAH!

WAH!

HE SAID BAD THINGS ABOUT MY NEW TOY!

WAH!

Of course, if you guys have better answers to the guy's question as to why Xbox 360 exclusives don't seem to stay that way, be my guest and answer instead of whining on about how evil I am.

Sorry I had to answer with facts.

The answer you were hoping for was likely "The reason Xbox 360 games don't stay exclusive is because it's really awesome and I love the way you can turn it off via the controller" but that's not the answer you'll get from me.
