You could do it literally like a gumball, organise a race time, loads of people sign up, they're given start and destination points and have time to plot their routes, enter them into sat nav, then once you've done that you can start the race.

Like the real thing you would have checkpoints like a ferry to get to after a days racing(an accelerated game-day tho :D ), whoever doesn't make it to the ferry crossing in time would be eliminated from further rounds.

And another thing. One single race would have to take a good few hours. Petrol stations are positioned everywhere and in each one you can fill up and save your progress.

People can sit in a World of Warcraft raid for 4 hours solid, so there is no reason dedicated people couldn't do a several hour race either.

As far as I'm aware, you can create a route of however long you like, then people pay can a fee to race your route and the person at the end of a set period (a couple of days I think it was, although it's probably customisable) that did it the quickest gets a prize or something, this could be awesome between a load of friends, you could set a nice long route, race it and then discuss route taken afterwards.

This is going to be ace :)

So I get the impression that a lot of "Forumers" here work in the industry. Who's going to suggest our Cannonball \ Gumball rally idea at the next development braintstorm (no idea how the ideas for games are developed) and can I get an "idea" credit :(

Too right mate  See my post above.

Although seeing that screen shot has dashed my memories of how good that game looked.

I wonder if you will be able to run over chickens in this one too...?

I remember making the game easier by turning the detail level down, this removed all the trees from the side of the road, less to crash into :(

4D Sports Driving : Stunts was also 100% amazing (from the makers of Test Drive accoring to the original box!) It had loads of real cars, a track editior, jumps, loop-the-loops, corkscrews and an amazing replay function with multiple cameras, all in stunning VGA !

I remember back in the Amiga days walking into my local games store and seeing Test Drive. Asked for a demo of the game. As soon as I heard that american dude say 'Accolade presents...' I was sold! Sad but true! lol... game was ok although bloody clunky! Still that sample at the start made it all worthwhile!

Can't say I'm blown away bt the vid tho... cars are too shiny and from what I can see aren't that high on poly count either (look at the tail lights). Plus the cars seem to hover slightly if you look at the shadows. Nor do they seem to have a 'real world' look to them...

Here's hoping theres a fair bit more work done before we see it!

nice front end/website mind....

'course if they put Hawian guy saying 'Atari presents...' at the start.. I'm SOLD!

I'd imagine it would be quiet until you challenge someone or join a race, sort of like entering an individual game lobby.

Has the 360 pad got enough buttons to wind down windows, activate the convertible roof, flash the lights, adjust the stereo and activate the wipers :(

I can just imagine myself trying to turn on the lights, but instead activating the windscreen wipers, panicking, loosing concentration and crashing into a tree ;)

Interesting preview.

Not sure about the challenges appearing to be limited to one-on-one.

Would rather you could arrange a group race - longer odds, greater rewards and more chances of incident and action. Maybe that will be included...

Definitely one to watch (once I buy a 360, natch).

Does anybody remember that F40 racing game that came out on 8\16 bit platforms ages ago? I had it for my Amstrad and was blown away with it at the time. Looking back it seems miles ahead of its time. On an 8-bit computer you had a paper map supplied with the game, which you used to decide your route. Different US Counties had different colored police cars and you had an amazing sense of freedom and choice – (you also had hills!!) which was revolutionary at the time. Its not really been done since to proper affect has it?

Yes! What was that called? I absolutely loved the concept of that game, but I actually found it quite boring to play. It was way ahead of its time, though.

I've only just cottoned onto what TDU is all about, and it sounds like exactly my sort of game. Although since reading this thread I've become more exciting about Kerraig and edargyl's imaginary Cannonball Run game.

If it can do all the stuff that the previews say, and looks as good as the videos, then it will be amazing.

Just like most other consoles this summer then.

Pfft!

Cube has more stuff being released for it between now and september!

PS2, Xbox, DS and PSP absolutely dwarf it.

DS & PSP are handhelds

And I'd like to see those cube titles listed :)

It's a very dry summer for all consoles from what I've looked at, well certainly nothing that interests me.

PeteBrant in negative Xbox 360 comment.

Wow, that's a shock. :)

Should I be positive about the release schedule, then? I bought 2 of the things, I reserve the right to criticise it.

360 for the win! I'm glad there's not much coming out. There's ben too many good 360 titles over the last month or so and anyway Oblivion.
