The Formula 1 Thread

Just days after one of the best races in the modern era (in my biased opinion), Bernie's greed becomes what everyone is talking about in F1, when it should obviously be all about the title challenge and what we have in store this weekend. It's tainted. :(

Told you. No ads.

Well done. It's irrelevant as it is a subscription to something that obviously no-one here wanted, otherwise they would already have it.

"Mimic the BBC F1 announcement by paying only half your licence fee and then giving really half arsed details about how they'll get the rest."

Believe it or not, there are people who don't like other sports. Personally I'm a big football fan, but only watched a minuscule amount of football TV, and can easily do without Sky for football. I don't watch Cricket, Golf, Rugby, Darts (lol!) or any of the other sports they cover, because I have zero interest in them. Why should I people pay for all of those other sports just to watch the one that occurs only 20 weekends out of the 52 or so in the year? It's a fucking joke, and I wouldn't be surprised if viewing figures plummeted.

I sympathise, but I feel like it should be pointed out that few people would tolerate such an argument being applied to the BBC. (e.g. "Why should I have to subsidise Eastenders? I only watch F1 and Newsnight.")

Whitmarsh said moves to take F1 off free-to-air could be viewed as a breach of the Concorde Agreement, with him claiming that there were clauses in the deal that ties the teams, Ecclestone and the FIA together that guarantees the sport's broadcast platform.

TIME FOR THE GPWC! BREAKAWAY IS GO!

Come on FOTA, time to fuck Bernie hard!

I can understand the frustration of those that only watch F1, but I think directing the anger at Sky is misdirected. Looks like it's the BBC that decided it costs too much and have bailed out their contract early.

I guess for the BBC the cost didn't make it worth while even with the good viewing figures, which means the product is some what over priced and Sky have been daft enough to stump up that price.

But we already get "every second of every race, qualifier and practice session" and more. Without needing to pay Murdoch or slap a dish on the side of our house.

It's a small consolation, but it needed pointing out as people were moaning that the races would be forever interrupted by adverts for tyres and razors.

the thing is - you might already be a Sky subscriber but with no Sky Sports. I'm not an F1 fan myself at all, but I know a few folks who are nuts about it... they also have Sky but neither of them have Sky Sports. Now they'll have to buy the Sky Sports package just to watch F1 while the other 90% of the content they have absolutely no interest in.

It's a real shame. There's your BBC budget cuts in action right there... and James Murdoch complains because he 'can't compete'.

This. I download all the TV shows I watch (Breaking Bad etc.) and F1 (and sometimes MOTD) is the only thing I actually watch on television.

Exactly the same for me. It's the one thing I almost watch on the telly. The BBC without it has almost no relevance, apart from the odd doc I stumble upon BBC4.

I'm sure the fact the BBC is showing highlights is enough to let Bernie get away with this. He's no fool I'm sure the lawyers have been over it with a fine toothcomb.

That stands for any package based media, including the TV license paying for the BBC output. I doubt even the most avid BBC fan consumes more than 10% of their output.

Part of it will be the BBC looking to cut costs. I think it was the Guardian earlier in the year that hinted that the BBC was thinking of dropping both F1 and Wimbledon to cut costs. So far that's one-ish out of two!

I feel it should be pointed out that I pay the BBC just ONE licence fee whereas with Sky I'd have to pay them for the base package and then Sky sport on top. That's a lot more money. :)
