So is Webber's improvement mainly down to the exhaust rule/defuser and tyre changes which apparently favour his driving style? I'm confused by the exhaust defuser thing though. It's not the same as it was in Silverstone (10% blown gases when off throttle or something) but not the same as before (50%?) though right? So what are the rules now closest to - Silverstone levels or pre-silverstone?

Rules are exactly the same as pre=Silverstone I believe. Definitely the same as they were in Valencia.

I'm not sure how many times they've changed :coffee:

It's the same as it was in Valencia. The engine map has to be the same for qualifying and the race, because everyone thought the Redbulls were running grenade setting for qualifying and turning it down for the race. It would appear that they are not. The teams can run whatever blown diffuser package they had pre-silverstone and continue to develop it as they see fit. Hence Renault have their fart box front exhaust bolted back on and the cars back at the front of the grid(ish)

Anyway.

What a stunner from Lewis. Give the man a sniff of the front and he'll spank the arse off the car to give you a result. Meanwhile Alonso started to believe his own hype and got nailed, But it still looks like a Redbull one two. Our only hope is Webber getting all unnecessary and taking Vettel out at half distance.

I don't see why people are surprised Lewis is near the front, McLaren were quick before and even at Silverstone. Ferrari haven't dropped off much in relation and Alonso is only ~2 tenths further back in qualy here than he was in Silverstone.

Hamilton is 8km/h faster down the straight than Webber but loses 4 tenths in the middle sector. I reckon he'll struggle tomorrow over the race distance . The Ferrari seems quick and looks good to drive so Alonso could be a threat in the race. When you consider the lightening starts he's been getting off the grid he could be alongside Vettel by the first turn. Webber should win this I feel.

I'm hoping Button has gambled on a wet set up and it pays off tomorrow.

Meanwhile Alonso started to believe his own hype and got nailed,

Looks like he drove the car as fast as possible which wasn't fast enough, rather than under performing.

The Mclarens where nowhere at silverstone! If the start had been dry they would have been left for dead. They had to run Lewis with barely enough juice in the car to stand a chance. as it was he almost lost 4th to Massa of all people. Meanwhile Alonso was all over Silverstone and was expected to carry on the success here. All weeks it's been a case of "well hahaha, we're not counting our chickens yet haha" *taps nose and winks. They thought they had the measure of Redbull and just needed to turn up and cruise to an easy victory.

Alonso went out when the flag dropped at the start of Q3 to put a marker down for the rest to chase, then suddenly Webber is almost a second faster and Alonso is over driving the car. Ferrari had written a script and expected to get pole. The trouble was Redbull hadn't read it.

As for Button, once again the mysterious "wrong set up" fairy struck his car and he was back where the car naturally belongs. Behind the Redbulls, Ferrari and Lewis. The only mystery really is why Jenson thinks he is as good at qualifying as Lewis ;)
