Now they just need some sponsors and s pair of drivers with a pulse.

And you could argue that the car he died in might not have been such a pig to drive had it had active suspension....

Kobi and Di Resta

That was my thinking behind Kobi, Di Resta was purely because he's British, but then Willaims have a history of not treating their British drivers brilliantly don't they?

I think it boils down to the fact that Frank Williams is actually a bit of a cunt.

He's always put the team first rather than any driver, I'm guessing that Prost was a shoe in because of the powerplant in the car in 93?

I think there were three factors at play there. Old big nose didn't want him in the team, Renault wanted big nose in the team, and Mansell wanted a pile of cash to stay.

Frank did the usual and told him to get bent.

Yeah, I was led to believe that Nigel wanted a whole shed load of cash. When Newman-Hass offered that he stuck two finger up to Frank and the boys. To be fair though, Nigel had almost been killed in numerous Williams cars and had just delivered a world championship for them, so i think he was justified in asking for some more money.

But Frank was like Enzo and believed that the driver was just another element of the car. It's why they lost Hill, Mansell and Newey too. No man was bigger than the team.

I think, and I could be wrong he had a relationship with Tom Walkinshaw, and a fat paycheck with the chance to build a team up from nothing was at the time what he was looking for....

He would have been second fiddle at any other team, though the Jordan drive might have been a better option.

And a perfectly fair question would be, would paying 20odd% of their budget to Mansell have impacted how competitive the 1993 car was? Especially as at the time they didn't know that McLaren would have an enforced "off" year.

I can't remember who Hill's team mate at Arrows was, but I do remember he was a pay driver that was literally single-handedly paying Hill's salary that year.

Pedro Diniz

And yes basically, Parmalat was largely funding the team.

Why did he go to arrows then ... it was always doomed to failure that one ?

He went to give us Hungary 97, a fantastic and heartbreaking story all in one, would have been great if he'd got the win.

One of Damon's main problems that year were that people were expecting him to be pushing forward and leading Arrows, with Diniz scrubbing around at the back of the grid paying the bills.

Turned out that Diniz was actually pretty handy and managed to outqualify Hill at a few races! Fun fact: the Ferrari drive that went to Barrichello in 2000 almost went to Diniz. Marlboro wanted a South American driver to help promote their smoke sticks down that way.

Well quite, the previous year he'd been at Ligier with Olivier Panis, no mean driver. If we ignore the freak show that was Monaco 1996, Panis scored points twice, so did Diniz.

And in 1997, if Hill hadn't managed his own miraculous race in Hungary he would actually have been outscored by Diniz and in 1999 he did outscore Jean Alesi.

I think McLaren will be throwing the kitchen sink and next doors cat at the car to make it get the pole for this week, so I wouldn't put it past being a Hamilton pole. But Vettel will still win, and have one of those giant foam fingers stashed in his car ready to pull out just before he crosses the line....
