Isn't F1 sort of eco friendly in some manner already?

It's not too bad on a relative basis. The sport itself is about as unecofriendly as you can get, but very few people compete and/or attend races. The millions and millions of football fans and teams driving to matches every weekend will have far more impact in real terms.

Can't remember who the original poster was that wrote this but yeah, F1 isn't exactly environmentally friendly by nature but we live in a world with cars and it's more important than anything to help the development of those cars towards something more eco friendly.

"But you can buy aftermarket exhausts from OEM racing providers no hassle at a lot cheaper than they used to be that will in some cases probably last longer than your car. Your tyres grip harder and last longer thanks to motorsport. Your brakes stop you better and last longer thanks to motorsport. Your engine lasts longer thanks to lubrication developed from motorsport. You can buy better quality petrol close to what is used in motorsport. Those are just the obvious consumables. The way we think about safety in cars/crash structures has in part been due to motorsport. Extensive use of aluminium in road cars is common now and that comes from motorsport - with materials you're talking about them being tested in F1/similar at levels beyond normal car use and worked in ways that are new, so there's decades of experience in working with these materials that all comes down to production cars.

20 years ago it took 3,000 hours to make a McLaren F1 chassis, it now takes 4 hours for the MP4-12C. Progress is very quick and with CFRP derivatives now being made by more and more specialists there is more competition and ever-increasing efficiency in how it's made. Plastics and F1 construction are quite obviously how road cars will eventually go, BMW's new i range - which will be mainstream cars - are going to be based around a CFRP cell, with the benefits being obvious not only in its safety but how light and eco-friendly it is. At the moment there is a massive drive for efficiency in road cars and where do we turn to for lessons in innovation, new materials and cutting weight? How about a motorsport that has been carbon neutral since 1997? "

I can't recall it exactly, think it might have been from a question in the fan forums, but I do remember comments that actually one of the big problems is the transport and moving everything around the world, so better organization of the calendar could make a big improvement. Which makes sense, but I guess it's not a public enough change compared to saying look at our new engines.

Good! Green (in relation to F1) can go and die in the woods.

Is this the same woods that the hippies have been moaning about quads and enduro riders using once a year? and then when you present them with a machine with an electric engine that's totally silent, the cunts find something else to complain about?

If that's the one then fuck yes, I wholeheartedly agree.

Thats kind of how I understood it really, its probably greener than your average joe realises it is but theres only so far racing two dozen highly tuned cars around a circuit for two hours, plus qualifying and practice sessions, can be really.

And as has been pointed out, organising the calender (do we really need two events in Spain?) could make enough of an impact even if its not headline worthy.

Which makes me think, if the FIA to order the calender properly, taking in neighbouring countries, optimal times for races (as in seasonal and traditional) and keeping the number of locations as diverse and as far reaching as possible, what would a good calendar look like? Surely instead of two races in Spain they could return to Estoril (it's already pretty damned similar to the circuit in Barcelona anyway)? It'd be great to have a French circuit back too, and heading over to South America for a single race seems a trifle wasteful.

Ok, I'm proper jealous this time. Bastard! Are applications closed now?

I was going to apply the other day but thought I'd take my time to think of some good questions, and promptly forgot all about it :(

Question 1: Who is the best Dutch F1 driver of all-time?

If their answer is anything but Meerman then you must leave immediately in disgust.

Oh, or sensibly:

Question 1: Do you feel that Formula One currently has the right balance between its formula integrity and entertainment?

Here’s the question i sent in.

For me as a F1 fan in enjoy watching drivers actually racing one another. This season has been fantastic for overtaking however we seem to be having “Stewards investigating...” after the slightest contact. I also hate to see incidents being investigated after the race when there is plenty of time left to decide in the race. No doubt having an ex driver as a steward has helped but do you feel its getting a bit OTT with the penalties? I’d personally hate to see a driver not go for an overtake because he’s afraid of getting a drive through or a retrospective time penalty.

For future reference, I did this with the Montreal forum and got a mail saying that due to volume of applications they'd gone first come first served - so best to apply straightaway if you get an opportunity in future. Was quite cross with myself at the time but my plane was delayed a bit in any case so I would have missed half of it anyway.

That's worth knowing, thanks. So furious with myself!

The letter says it's 5 time's oversubscribed, but i think i'm guaranteed entry. Either way i'll be getting there early just in case.

Probably a good idea but you should be ok, the rejection email I got urged people not to try to get in without a ticket. I imagine even if you got there 3 hours earlier than humanly possible the front rows will be occupied by uber F1 nuts though. Always shocks me the lengths motorsport fans will go to to get the best seats!

So i finally saw Senna at the cinema tonight, stunning and much better than the 'out there' version i saw a while back. One of the best things i have seen at a cinema and they they built towards the tragic ending was handled very well and with a great score. It was eery at the end as the credits rolled and it was just silent in the cinema - never experienced anything like that before.

Brilliant stuff, Tracy enjoyed it too but was expecting a film with someone playing Senna
