I thought it was a pun at first, but now I'm convinced that Bob does think 'clever' is spelt 'cleaver'. It's a revelation!

His post are generally very cleaver though.

I thought it was an austrian accent...

From what I gathered it looks like they've ditched the entire idea completely, which is a tiddly bit silly. Announcing it a couple of days before tech inspection at Barcelona was bad enough, but it looks like they've gone to talk to the teams after deciding this and been told it's unworkable, making it look like they decided on it without actually even getting some advice or input from the people who design the cars.

A little bit silly. Then again, at the Canadian GP in 1993 they introduced a new wording of the rules that was so badly written that all the cars on the grid apart from the BMS Lolas were declared illegal

I think they realised they just couldn't police it effectively.

That was my first thought when reading the original article on this, how the hell will they know that a maximum of 10% of open throttle gases are passing through the diffuser?

The only way to effectively do something about this would be to ban blown diffusers completely, which I'd imagine would mean a fairly major redesign of the car's exhausts.

I'll ask my mate who worked on integrating the FIA ECU thing a couple of years back, but I'd imagine it has access to exhaust sensor data.

Edit: He said "yeah i think the FIA can look at any telemetry channels they want, and the engine guys must be monitoring this"

A high level source indicated that the decision had been taken because a number of 'unforeseen and unintended consequences' of the ban had been brought to the FIA's attention.

Trsnlation

A high level source indicated that the decision had been taken because Ferrari have just figured out how to do it too had been brought to the FIA's attention.

John Surtees, Ferrari, Mexico or Watkins Glen 1964 (I think). Special as Enzo Ferrari had 'quit' F1 and the cars were being run under the North American Racing Team banner, and also as it was the only time (I think) that Ferrari ran their cars in anything other than red.

I have a horribly sad backlog of F1 knowledge nerdily stored in my brain. Read so many books since I was 6 that it all kind of just jammed itself in there.

Wish the same had happened at school with things like maths and sciences :).

Yep, Surtees actually clinched the championship in it too. Technically, Ferrari should have one fewer championship to their name and "North American Racing Team" should have one.

Enzo was having a strop over the FIA approving a new sportscar.

It came up elsewhere because people were posting cars that aren't what they clearly are. This was one that IS what they clearly aren't.

For those new to F1, some of these may confuse...

Certainly is!

Re: Toleman, interesting to think that the official Renault team in 1981 - 1985 raced against what was to become the second generation of Renault in the form of Toleman.

EDIT: This is a fun one - this most certainly wasn't a Ferrari!

Hah yeah, cool isn't it? It was the first year (1983) where ground effects had been banned (forgetting the 1981 saga - another story full of hilarious FIA ineptitude there!) and some of the teams went a bit 'out there' with the wings to try and get maximum downforce. Toleman had this beast, for example:

Also, this wasn't a Benetton either... nor a Tyrrell!

EDIT: Spoilered for large image size.
