The season has finally started then, from Scarbs' twitter.

I'm hearing mutterings in the Melbourne pitlane that McLarens exhaust has caught the attention of the FIA scrutineers

He's also got some pics of the rear minus cover and exhausts with some analysis.

Speed TV yeah.

I was in LA a couple of years back trying to find a sports bar/other that showed it - impossible. Nobody even knew what F1 was (apart from the blokes in the Ferrari store in Macy's, which actually had a full size model F1 car in it!).

Looks like Speed show it which I have access to so fingers crossed.

They do, and they're *reasonably* good at it, Steve Machett is their Brundle and he's an ex-mechanic who knows his stuff.

Watch out though, mid-season 4 of the races are on Fox instead (same crew).

I managed to find a bar in New York showing the final race of the 2008 season, where everyone seemed to be in either Ferrari or McLaren gear. You know how whoopy and enthusiastic Americans tend to get, so it made for an amazing experience, especially with the way the title changed hands in he final seconds of the race.

Conversely, it proved impossible to find anywhere in London that was showing a race one time. It was a 11am start, so the pubs were all near empty, but no one was prepared to switch channels for me; not even a sports bar with about 20 TVs and no customers.

Second practice: 0525-0705, BBC Red Button/online

Saturday 26 March

Third practice: 0255-0405, BBC Red Button/BBC Radio 5 live sports extra/online

Qualifying: 0500-0730, BBC One/BBC Radio 5 live/online

Qualifying repeat: 1300-1415, BBC One

Sunday 27 March

Grand Prix live: 0600-0900, BBC One/BBC Radio 5 live/online

F1 forum: 0900-1000, BBC Red Button/online

Grand Prix repeat: 1300-1500, BBC One

Highlights: 1900-2000 and 0255-0355, BBC Three

Don't forget when setting your alarms that the clocks go forward on Sunday. I assume the Sunday times are BST, I wish they'd move the race forwards or backwards a week and make setting the alarm easier.

I think (hence I am probably wrong) that the zone there is where they measure the distance between the cars, and the activation will be available along the pit straight. Think they have done that to try to add an extra overtaking zone rather than enhance an existing one (i.e. the run down to turns 3 and 13)

@ Jonny5... good question

But yeah, I gather that if the car behind is within 1 second at the detection line before 14, he'll be allowed to activate the wing just before the last corner and all the way down into turn one. I guess the drivers won't activate until after the last corner though or that'd screw them up a bit through turn 16 otherwise.

Part of me want this system to be a spectacular failure so that it never gets used after Melbourne. Honestly I think it's a pathetic gimmick which will prove far too difficult to regulate, I think there is far too much room for interpretation.

Read: Alonso passes someone using it - no problem; Lewis passes someone using it, get's a penalty.

You KNOW this will happen.

Paranoid much? :P

The officials have ultimate control over the wing. I don't see them activating it and then issuing a penalty for it's use.

ah yes you are 100% right, i missed the point. so they can start heading onto the pit straight have the whole straight to use it & the deactivate it into turn 1. I take it back.

With the tyres its a double edged sword too, if the guy in front pits, giving you a straight run down the start/finish straight with the rear wing activated, that could cause your tyres to receive more wear when you may not have much to gain. Obviously its upto the driver whether they push the button or not, but its going to be interesting to see what the drivers do use it for this season, same with the KERs.

Can they use KERs at any point in the race (besides the first lap) or does it have a similar ruling to the wing?

Hamilton does seem to have an uncanny knack of getting himself in situations which the rules don't explicitly cover, and I can't think of many occasions when the retrospective clarification has gone in his favour!

KERS can be used anywhere on the lap, but there is only 5 seconds worth (i think) in the tank, once they cross the line it resets to full, If they've done enough breaking to top it up, which they should do easily on a street circuit.

It's 6 seconds of use per lap, and they can use it anytime, including lap 1, so long as they are going 100kph+. So it's still a massive advantage at the start like it was 2 years ago.

The rear wing is 'armed' if the driver is <1 second behind any car in front when passing through the detection line (this can be used for lapping and unlapping!). The driver gets notification of this, as do the TV people and apparently something pops up on screen for us at home as well. The driver can then activate it at any point they desire after the activation line.

What I'm interested in is whether the driver in front gets an automatic warning that the guy behind has an 'armed' DRS, or do the pit crew have to warn him over the radio. I can imagine it being pretty harrowing seeing someone get slowly closer in your mirrors, lap after lap, and worrying that every lap may be the one he is finally within 1 sec of you... could see more mistakes?

Wonder how many times the driver threw up during that. Schumacher won't flip though, he'll have wings appear out of the side of his Mercedes and a machine gun popping out of the nose, he'll then don a white scarf.
