So...

Red Bull seem to have the fastest car, but has reliability and driver problems. Ferrari are probably 2nd fastest.

The McLaren seems faster than the Mercedes - seems like Button made the right decision in changing team.

The new tyre rules seem to suit Button, as he was doing consistently fast laps on ancient tires.

The Virgin and Hispania Racing cars can actually finish a race.

John Travolta?

He represents Quantas. His fat, gurning face was all over the news in Australia when they launched their fleet of A380s, and turns up at whatever event they sponsor.

Goods skills by Button, and an entertaining race. It's eerily quiet now in Melbourne.

Well that was a gazillion times better than that snore-fest two weeks ago.

Lewis needs to get his Dad back to put him in his place. I couldn't stand the sight of Anthony Hamilton but he was part of what made him a world champion. McLaren clearly like working with Button and if Hamilton's not careful he could be pushed out of his own team. It's too early to call but this could be the start of a slippery Tiger Woods-esque slope.

Why did he go for the whole race length with his rain light blinking?

When everyone pitted together surely they can't have all been released within this new 'safety zone' which we were told today isn't a "rule" but a "guideline". What is the point in this guideline and what, if any, are the punishments for breach? Brundle said that Massa was the big loser from that round of stops because he had to wait. Did everyone else wait as they should? If Massa had been released when he was ready he could have been up there with Button and not backing an increasingly angry Hamilton into Webber?

Also, Guns n' Roses

Synopsis from Lewis:

I did my job, the team failed me and Mark Webber is a twat!

I don't know if Hamilton did do his job, it seems to be getting "bigged up" a bit, but Button made the call to come in early to swap to slicks. Hamilton should have made a similar call to stay out.

It will be interesting to see how Hamilton handles this, his career seems to be going a bit downhill since he won the title. Maybe it's a little bit of lack of experience, but Hamilton seems to be great when things are going his way (great car, great conditions) but when it's not- he seems to lose it too much (I mean, having a rant on the radio is not on). I wonder how McLaren would have done last year if they had someone else instead of Kovalainen?

It will be very interesting to see how it goes if Button starts doing really well, the McLaren garage seemed to be full of Button's family- which is a big contrast to previously with Hamilton's Father and that silly bint from the Pussycat Dolls... And Button seems to be getting a lot of praise from Martin Whitmarsh on the F1 forum on the beeb.

Anyway, great race by Kubica and Alonso (he should have been allowed to overtake Massa) and I hope to God that things get better for Schumacher. He seemed to do not bad, but it's a bit underwhelming, isn't it?

Did John Travolta not get something silly like a 747 from Quantas, in return for him being an "ambassador" to the airline?

EDIT- it was a 707

SNAP! :)

Also, it's looking pretty clear that Whitmarsh favours Button over Hamilton.

I'm not surprised, Button seems to be acting as a great spokesperson for McLaren- did you see the bit before the race where he was showing the beeb around the Woking factory?

As for your first comment about Hamilton possibly not doing his job; sorry fella, you're talking bollocks. Lewis was the most exciting driver on the track today.

I don't think it'll say "Be exciting" in Hamilton's job description. I think it's more likely to say "Conduct yourself appropriately off the track" and "Cooperate with the team to achieve the best result possible". He failed to do the first and it's debatable whether he did the second.

I'm sure the sponsers will be happy with a car in first, and the other car involved in 90% of the overtaking.

The league has been updated.

Kubica really did the job for me there and I'm on the bottom of the first page! Rubens did well for me too.

I've gotta say that Webber really showed how shit he is today. He's just crap.

Jenson really showed his class though. I think I'm starting to appreciate him a lot more now that he's won with a third team. That was a really special drive. One for the history books.

Did anyone else LOL at Eddie Jordan putting Kobayashi as Kubica's teammate? :P

Lots of positives to come from this race:

McLaren's race pace

Kubica's grit

Rosberg's speed

Petrov's mum

The reactions of Coulthard, Humphrey and Brundle made me laugh. It'd be nice to see some more Kravitz or some of the 5Live team instead!

I can't help rooting for Kubica and Petrov, they have that impoverished underdog look about them.
